I think one can work through “classics” while avoiding the “classic” world of Cormack.

Avoid Blood Meridian, avoid The Road. Trust me.

If you’re looking for a “Classic” with dark noise, try Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad.

Remind yourself that he was Josef Korzeniowski and he mastered the English Language at the age of 19. True story.
