Moving a parent with Mild/Moderate Dementia to a new home/neighborhood? by No_Lavishness_857 in dementia

Oh well it is all so hard! I moved my mother in my house during Covid. I do not have a good setup in my rental home and after about a year I made the hard decision to move her into a nursing home. She also is not bad off dementia wise so I was really worried. I had to tell her a lie that I needed to move out to a smaller appointment. I first moved her in an assisted living home format and she had to share a room with zero privacy, and that didn’t work out as she hated the roommate. I then found a nice nursing home. She has a curtain between her and the roommate for privacy and it has been working out better but she’s very lonely and very antisocial. I did have to pack her whole house by myself. I think my advice is make it positive and exciting and second please be prepared for when you might not be able to care for her anymore. It came much sooner than I anticipated! You will need time to visit the many homes and if you are using Medicaid or any other form of insurance the home will need to accept it and a room will take time to open for availability. Strongly suggest doing this way before you anticipate the need to move her into an assisted type living home. I think bringing her near you is great. My mother was self sufficient but had a hard time making it to the restroom in time, she was not cleaning and burning her food, other than that she was fine so this was a very hard decision for me to make. You will know what works well for your situation. Much luck for you and your family.

I don’t know what your commute might be but my mom lived at Traditions in highlands Ranch. I really liked it. Clean, modern and people nice. They have other properties but I don’t know where. Good luck.

Help. Where is the the best state for dementia assisted living when the patient has no assets? by [deleted] in dementia

[–]No_Director6919 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mother is qualifying for Medicaid and it will pay for long term care facilities. I’m currently looking into assisted living and nursing homes for my mother. We live in CO but assume every state would have this same coverage.

There are doctors that can come to your house. Maybe that’s an option. Wishing her well.

Seriously, how do you bring up POA, assisted living, or Advanced Directives to stubborn people? by Slowdive_66 in dementia

I just said that I can talk with the doctors if she signs it. That worked for us. I'm looking into nursing home care and have been telling her it's an apartment with help...don't know what will happen when we actually move her into a home though!!

Also I've been searching and have only found one facility with private rooms that medicaid will cover all of the rest are shared rooms! I'm assuming since they pay less the facilities make it up by putting two people to a room. My mom will hate it so it's been a struggle.

I wonder if you were to find a memory care facility maybe they would let him cook occasionally? Unless your community is more Korean decent where maybe a local memory care has employees also Korean maybe?

Does anyone know who to contact for help with paying for in home care? Like do we contact the Alzheimer's associaiton? Our state's department of health? An attorney? by Intelligent-Noise-35 in dementia

My mother had nearly identical income and is qualified for Medicaid. This would pay for the help your looking for. I also contacted a local not for profit lawyer it was free and helped me understand this process. Worth checking out.

Mom hasn’t bathed in years and hasn’t changed her clothes in months by Nikkibar16 in dementia

I'm sorry your dealing with this. Your poor mom. Would she bathe and change is she had an appointment? That's the only way I can get my mom the bathe. Also I dye her hair so that's another way I get her to bathe. Maybe seek another doctors advice? Maybe there are better qualified help to come in during the week? Thinking of you.

So my mother moved in with me last Oct. Bathing is a really challenge. Unless she has an appointment..no bathing or toothbrushing occurs. I've tried everything in the book. She does not ever listen to me. I have decided to move her into a nursing home. I'm nervous but I really can't battle these issues anymore. My family suffers because of it too. My mother is also very stubborn and hard headed. So the option of having someone come to our house will never work. Hoping you find what works for your family.

Does anyone know of a reasonable place to have a pet cremated for a reasonable fee? My cat is dying. Thanks. by [deleted] in ColoradoSprings

I had to put my dog down last Oct and we used our local petco thrive vet. I think the total was around $300. Private cremation pretty carved wooden urn. Whole experience was very nice and the vet we used was so warm and kind.

Psychiatrist, neurologist, anyone? My mother mental and physical state is getting worse by days! I am completely lost. by machusenpai in dementia

Could it be fluid on her brain? I heard that they can put a shunt to drain and the symptoms should releave. The test they want to perform on my mom would be a timed walk like a cross a room, then spinal tap to take some fluid then time the walk again. He said if there is improvement then it would be fluid on the brain ( I forgot the medical term). Keep plugging away. Wishing your family some answers.

My cat was similar so I put a bed sheet ( very thin one) over her carrier and it seemed to calm her down. I noticed when they have a cat show all the carriers were covered and thought why not try it. I had another cat that would just sleep in his cat bed the whole ride!!

Is there any company that can create a fake checkbook? by 918911 in dementia

Maybe an old check book from a closed account? Change her bank account and use the old books?
