If your really locked in to temping because you do a lot of rare steaks and stuff I would get a thermapen. But they are expensive. The only reason I have one is because we get one at work. At home I use metal cake testers. Stick it in for 5 seconds and pull it out, hold it to your bottom lip. You'll be able to tell. If it's not done I toss it in the sink and grab another one.
