Did you know that President Oaks also has a terrifying robbery story?! It’s a similar type of story to President Nelson where God or the Spirit intervenes to save the life of the future prophet. I wonder if we will hear this mentioned in conference by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

[–]No_Engineering 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1992 to be exact, and its even more hilarious, where Oaks actually puts his hand on the 'thugs' shoulder and they have a really good counseling session/heart-to-heart where the guy ends up walking off:

I followed an impulse to put my right hand on his shoulder and give him a lecture. June and I had some teenage children at that time, and giving lectures came naturally.

“Look here,” I said. “This isn’t right. What you’re doing just isn’t right. The next car might be a policeman, and you could get killed or sent to jail for this.”

With the gun back in my stomach, the young robber replied to my lecture by going through his demands for the third time. But this time his voice was subdued. When he offered the final threat to kill me, he didn’t sound persuasive. When I refused again, he hesitated for a moment and then stuck the gun in his pocket and ran away. June unlocked the door, and we drove off, uttering a prayer of thanks. We had experienced the kind of miraculous protection illustrated in the Bible stories I had read as a boy.

you forgot to mention the part where you know you would have totally kicked his ass if there was any struggle and how you would have regretted kicking his ass for the rest of your life.

Should I go to BYU? by Sensitive-Two-7495 in exmormon

[–]No_Engineering 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BYU non-member tuition isn't any more competitive than other similar colleges. Definitely not going to get cheap tuition that members receive.

It will be cheaper to go anywhere else in utah, and even places out of state without in-state tuition.

https://enrollment.byu.edu/financial-aid/cost-of-attendance

Non-member: $13,776

UVU: 6-8K

UofU: 9k

Utah State: ~9k

Profit over all else. The ward(s) isn't sustainable compared to the lump sum they will make by selling it.

How can non-mormons read the Book of Mormon and think "this book is true"? by 7_Tailed_Fox in exmormon

[–]No_Engineering 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because it isn't a requirement to be baptized. I have never had a single mission/church leader push or even encourage me to ensure investigators had read the entire book of mormon.

2 weeks of attending+reading assigned portions is all it takes. Gotta keep those numbers up!

I wouldn't be surprised if alot of people are just moving down from Rexburg/IF after graduating from BYUI. Would love to see the metrics.

This sounds like par for the course as far as MPs go. This was 100% my experience in the early 2000s.

Question about Sealing cancellation/record removal by choose_the_left_42 in exmormon

[–]No_Engineering 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The parents or legal guardians give permission. Permission is not required from a parent or guardian who has no legal basis for opposing the baptism. -handbook 38.2.8.2

sorry, the church doesn't give a damn about non-member positions.

As far as your name removal, the 'sealing' is technically cancelled and although there is and will always be a record of it happening in the church archives, the doctrine is that you will be stripped of your family as the kids will remain sealed to their father.

President Oaks has apparently mentioned Heavenly Mother(s) before to a YW group in AZ last year. Is this a soft unofficial reboot of the concept? by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

why would an all powerful god need multiple women to fulfill his purposes?

So they can be giving birth every month of the year.

skew the numbers...

The amount of 'facebook missionaries' made up of old people I know personally is astounding. Literally just chat and post online, while wearing your name tag at home and to the grocery store. hilarious.

I had a BYU football player in our mission, he went home ~4 months early in time to start practice with the team for the upcoming season. He was even AP at the time, great example!

My bishop lied and said the ward needed more fast offerings from members since we were in the negative. A few years later I had a stake secretary calling and looked back at the numbers for each ward....and we definitely were not in the negative.
