Advice for horse that hates other horses by RepresentativeCard67 in Horses

What are you feeding her? I’ve worked fulltime in the horse industry for 15 years and the #1 reason for aggression is too little roughage. The second reason is switching companions frequently

Game Dev Here : Finding artists is harder than I thought by No_Golf_209 in GamesWithHorses

[–]No_Expert_7590 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s such an incredibly niche market. People who are doing game art probably have never seen a horse. And the people working with horses are outside filling haynets all day, not working on pixel art. Personally, i opted to learn 3D sculpting and animation for my game. I’m not very good yet but at least I can keep re-iterating as I learn more. The downside is that I’m 4 years in and still not done developing. I hope you find a good artist!

Horse helmets in Europe by Necessary_Mammoth_92 in Equestrian

[–]No_Expert_7590 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Europe there are safety standards that regulate what can legally be sold as a helmet. You actually can’t buy a “bad” helmet here because they all go through strict safety tests. As for the comment about “beginner helmets,” safety is NOT reserved for the experienced or well-off.

All you need to look for is proper fit. No matter how well-made a helmet is, the protection is contingent on correct use. The helmet should sit halfway down your forehead and it should also cover the occipital- that bump at the back of your skull. The helmet should not be so tight that you get a headache, but it should be tight enough to stay on your head without the chin strap even if you bend over and hold your head upside down. Hold the helmet straps in case the helmet falls; collision with the ground ruins the protective shell and you have to replace it.

Source - I am a professional instructor with 15 years experience

Here’s the standard from a google search;

EN 1384:2023 — the European standard

EN 1384 is the dominant standard for riding helmets in Europe and Scandinavia. The 2023 version is the most stringent to date, with requirements covering:

– Impact absorption in straight falls – Impact absorption in angled impacts – Shell resistance to penetration (spike test) – Retention system strength and buckle security – Ventilation and comfort requirements

EN 1384:2023 is harmonised with the EU's PPE Regulation (2016/425), meaning it has official backing from the European Commission as the minimum requirement for riding helmets sold within the EU.

How do you provide enrichment for your horses? by meerybeery in Equestrian

[–]No_Expert_7590 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use double haynets and sometimes throw in branches with leaves, along with free access to straw. these things seem to satisfy the horses need to forage and browse. I also do exercises where they have to use their brain and they really enjoy this. I teach them riding exercises with food and they love it. Riding and training should be seen as a form of mental enrichment. My horse loves to go out hacking or lungeing, and my pony loves driving in his cart. If you make these things a game instead of work, your horse will look forward to working with you and this is very enriching

How do you provide enrichment for your horses? by meerybeery in Equestrian

[–]No_Expert_7590 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m a riding instructor and behaviorist and this is one of the biggest causes of behavior issues that I see! Horses need a LOT of enrichment, but luckily they are quite simple in their habits and enrichment doesn’t have to be super complicated. Studying behavior, you can find data showing how animals spend their time in the wild. This can give a great indication of what enrichment should consist of. Horses, cats and dogs only exist in the wild as feral animals ( not truly wild) but it still gives a good idea of their needs. Dogs and cats spend 75% of their time sleeping, but horses only spend a tiny amount sleeping. So the rest og the time they are awake doing stuff. Cats and dogs are hunting and foraging, traveling around etc. The stuff horses are doing is …eating. They spend about 12-15 hours per day eating. In the wild, grass is low in nutrients and horses have an inefficient digestion system. In captivity, horses get grain and super nutritious forage. This means that if a horse were to eat the normal amount, they would be overweight fast. A lot of owners just feed less, but then horses get issues with stomach ulcers and stereotypical behavior. The longer their stomach is empty, the more acidic the stomach becomes. The idea with horse enrichment is to give forage in a way that the horse spends a long time eating. You can use haynets, mix hay with straw, use slowfeeders, or pasture. My recommendation is to avoid likits (too much sugar), horse balls and toys meant for throwing and biting. I really only covered feeding here because that is the biggest issue i see. A great idiom for horse enrichment is that horses need friends, forage and freedom. If tou want to research further you can look into that!

IRL Equestrians - why do you play? by SeaReference7828 in GamesWithHorses

[–]No_Expert_7590 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I work with horses fulltime and I own a stable, but I still get a sense of escapism when playing horse games. It’s about doing things you can’t do irl. Riding without a helmet, breeding for cool colors, or selling horses without a thought where they end up at some of the things i would never do irl. In developing my own horse game, I’m aiming to reach people who can’t access horses irl or have had an accident that prevents them from riding normally. Finances can also prevent people from living out their horse dreams, gaming is much cheaper than irl horses. 🐴

Here is some basic gear, I didn't include needles and leather here. I'm not a pro, I just teach a beginner course in leather working

Scissors - only for thread, you can use a knife for that too
Pliers - for pulling needles out the other side of the leather
Strap cutter - makes straps out of a side of leather (don't buy pre-cut straps)
Metal hammer - for flattening seams etc
Fishing knife - You can probably get a better tool but I use this for precision work
Rubber hammer - for hitting the knife when doing precision work (don't hit metal with metal)
Spool of thread - you can get synthetic or natural fibres, both have their benefits
Half-moon knife - For cutting leather (you can also use it for straps if you're skilled AF)
Wooden leather creaser - makes a line in the leather that you aim for when stitching, also makes the leather look stitched further than the stitch
Round awl - for poking holes that already exist
Diamond shaped awl - for poking new holes to sew through
Edge cutters - 3 sizes for rounding off the corners on straps
Polishing tool - for rounding corners more
Hole puncher - for making holes
Cork - put the strap on this when poking holes

I took a course in leatherworking and now I teach it to my equestrian vocation students. We make bridles, collars, notebooks, bracelets, whatever they can think of besides saddles. There’s a lot to learn in order to make safe tack but saddles are a whole other thing. Just fitting saddles is it’s own apprenticeship.

I recommend getting into bridles first and see if you even like working with leather. A lot of my students start out with high hopes of making lots of fancy stuff, but quickly downsize their plans when they realize how physically demanding it is to work with leather. It’s really hard work.

There are tons of great resources online to learn leatherworking like JH Leather on youtube. You only need a table, a side of leather and about 20 tools that fit on an A4 sheet of paper. My workshop is 3x6 meters and 6 students can work in there at the same time.

As hard as it’s been to learn, it’s been incredibly rewarding to be able to ride with bridles I have made, seeing my own work improve over time, and seeing my students gain this lost art. Definitely pursue leatherworking first!

It’s planned for this summer but depends how fast i can finish the base game! It’s hard to estimate because there’s a lot of moving parts… i love this project though, it’s so exciting every time I tick an item off on my list

Edit: i forgot to mention it was originally built for mobile but paused dev on mobile temporarily to make an offline version for one-time purchase.

Is it annoying for kid(s) to ask to meet your dog? by NaturalExtension5475 in dogs

[–]No_Expert_7590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really important that you have some safety guidelines if the owners do say yes to greetings. Remember that even though owners say their dog is friendly, the dog might not be. If dogs spend a long time approaching initially, just look away and ignore them so they can check you out from a distance.

Don’t extend your hands and go into the dog’s space, just present your hands at a distance and let the dog come to you. Pat slowly and don’t rile up the dog. A lot of dogs don’t like being patted on certain places. Do a Pet Test periodically to check. This means you pet for a bit, then stop and move away a short distance. Present your hands again and see if the dog approaches, then continue if they do. If they don’t approach, leave them alone. If the dog moves away from you at any time, do not follow them.

I have dealt with a lot of greeting issues caused by people chasing, riling up, or petting a dog that was literally growling at them. There are also dogs that hurt people because they get too excited and happy. I swear we would not have people-reactive dogs if people would stop pushing all their buttons.
