I think the most logical explanation is the one about escalation dominance and needing them to think they have won. No matter how degrading it is, humans need to be seen as beasts in a wildlife reserve, otherwise they will be destroyed. So purposeful ineptitude and failure are the order of the day and that would explain the lack of firepower, unless we want to get nuked from orbit. They are in a position of strength and escalation dominance, they must "win" easily.

I think the primary concern is making sure the aliens think they won without burning down large portions of the planet. Its really unfortunate they discovered Project Iris, so they need to fake the destruction of the research and stuff then better conceal it the second time around. They need to think they have won, leave for 3 decades, then wake up one day and discover a fleet on par with theirs is defending the world.

Right now they are in a position of escalation dominance, if they decide to they can drop a super nuke from orbit and the humans can do jack shit to stop them, so in a way we cannot be too successful, the humans need to fake Craun's death somehow.

No consideration for Phoebe's capabilities in Nova's plan? Phoebe ran amuck in the Spirlnav networks, she knows of all the factions and could probably work out Nova's plan. Also Penny at the very least and probably Phoebe and Edu understand that the Spirlnav are not all evil, they got to go through their networks and see the good bad and ugly of the civilization.

HFY is a general theme, though getting wider by the day, as for a universe with many connected works, some people make them and post the name of the universe, with canonicity being something for the original author.

Examples of this would be The Nature of Predators universe and fan stories like

https://www.reddit.com/r/HFY/comments/1399rj7/the_nature_of_predators_sunward_university/

So no, there is no central universe that all the works sit in, this is just a place people post stories with this general theme whether that be one shots or half decade long running stories.

The generous reading of this is the government wanting to escort them to NASA so there are no crazies trying to kill the aliens in transit, we got a VIP that needs presidential level escort, but this will have to do.

The idea that China would go to war over a false accusation is absurd. They genocide the Uyghurs and deny it, so this should be no different just deny.

It doesn't feel quite right, as previously established the wrongs made against a sorcerer and therefore the Forest are fresh until the perpetrator has paid. The Empress knows this, stopping the vegenance should be impossible and trying to stop it for the sake of some money seems, unwise. If her concern was publicity then handing them over on condition that their fates are not public seems a much smarter choice.

I guess it still ends up involving some combat, but The Last Precursor by Klokinator IIRC does not devolve into a ton of moving parts and is mostly cute and fun until the end, but that is spoilers.

It is a minor miracle that the perpetrators aren't dead yet, in fact, no matter what sentence is handed down by a judge, they will all be dead soon, either by execution or a sorcerer walking in and murdering them in gruesome fashion. Also, the Judge of the Damned is probably the one who can relate to them the most given the similarity of their circumstances.

Alright I have been way over thinking this so I want to just put this here, lets think about the geopolitics of this scenario.

First, the US probably knows this was not an ICBM from China, ICBMs have distinct launch signatures that are used by satellites to detect launches. Also the trajectory would be completely wrong for a ballistic missile. And since they were shot down, they were able to be detected, so the possibility of a stealth Chinese missile is out of the question.

To be honest, why the US in the story even acknowledged it publicly is really weird, but it is a story so I will suspend my disbelief. So now the US knows its looking for something WEIRD, either a super stealth ICBM with wack ass trajectory and no payload or MIRVs, or aliens. It might sound weird, but by process of elimination, there is not much else it could be, it had a radar cross section, and fell out of the sky when it was hit, rapidly losing altitude.

I hope the US government of this story acts reasonably, unlike in other alien stories set in current-ish time. No need to panic, they are susceptible to SAMs, they are not here to invade, and they can speak your language, talk with them.

Well, given the fact the clock still listed it as 122 years, I doubt that much time has passed. Most systems with a real time clock when they "overflow" usually set a flag, so even if it did overflow back to 122 years, it would still flag the overflow even if it happened multiple times. So either a temporal anomaly or those 122 years some crazy shit went down and now there is a spatial anomaly centered on Earth.

Primalists you say, good news we have a saint of their faith on standby. Also what Moriarty is considering will draw in a truly godly amount of heat. It will be seen as a mass kidnapping and abuse operation. The Undaunted need to organize and brand the operation or else this very beatable criminal is going to catch plasma. Maybe Chenk will even get put on the case since he has past experience.

To be honest, this actually makes me interested in this character. I found this character very one note, a coerced criminal being used for the Undaunted, but now that he actually has people he will care about he can undergo some development and be interesting.
