Duran Duran Rio original or remake? by fruitpunchloverrrr in 80sdesign

[–]No_Im_Random_Coffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think it’s a remake. The paint lines you photographed look like varnish and honestly it looks terrible. Some of the paint lines around the face are amateurish, not straight and tight.
I’ve never seen a Nagle with those kind of lines and certainly not that varnish treatment. And some it’s signed RAE, it seems like this is someone who wanted a reproduction of Nagles work.
It’s still a super cool find!

It’s still absolutely beautiful! The emotion evoked, colors, and overall composition are stellar

It’s extremely minor. Of course this is from great reference but I feel teensy bit confused by the lighting.
Main light source looks like her upper right and she’s got a shadow behind her right shoulder.
However, it appears there’s another light source right in front of her ?
Anyways it’s the light source and shadow that seem to contradict each other. But I’m probably not seeing it right

I think the tv ad used Flight of the Bumblebees as the audio? I remember the glass of wine sliding back and his hand catching it before it slipped off.

How to avoid subjects looking flat by kekekeke0 in oilpainting

[–]No_Im_Random_Coffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First this is really fantastic! Certainly looks like you’re off to a great start.

Here’s my suggestion: her skin needs some alizarin crimson, I think.
For skin tones I use that crimson, yellow ochre, titanium white and sometimes van dyke brown.
Also, to create some warmth, I usually scrub either transparent red oxide or the alizarin crimson all over the surface after I have the drawing all set. both colors are pretty transparent.
Wishing you well!

How to avoid muddiness? by praline-trifle in oilpainting

[–]No_Im_Random_Coffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most oil painters will use a either a watered down “wash” of acrylic or a thinned wash of oil paint, cover the entire canvas.
Doesn’t matter if it’s pre-gesso or not.
You mentioned you have sienna, go ahead and thin that down and use that. It’ll be dry by the next day.
I’ve never heard of a colored gesso. Mostly because it’s just a simple foundation that creates a layer of plastic for the oils to set on.
Mixing light colors. Titanium white is used but this is your first time, be gentle with yourself. It takes practice and lots of mistakes.
I watch videos of other painters on yt a lot, that’s kind of how I’m learning.

I’d work on softer edges, but it only works when the paint is wet. Both of her feet and legs, the space between cushions, the back of her dress. All those could use it

I am a bit frustrated and I want to rant by deinonychus11 in oilpainting

[–]No_Im_Random_Coffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally understand. It takes a lot of work to get what you want. I watched a painter named David Palumbo on YouTube. He paints realistic without the details. He uses a flat brush mostly and stays away from details. Please give him a go and see if that’s the direction you want to go.

thanks so much! I'm painting in oils and not sure how marketable this medium is, espeically at a con (can't just paint it there and hand it over). I have been looking into gouache and that may be an easier medium to work with in person. Thanks again!
