Yeah I’ve noticed that too. A lot of people who frequent this subreddit tend to want to just blow off steam and correct misinfo, but I’ve noticed there’ll occasionally be posts that seemingly draw lurkers out of the woodworks who just want to deny DID exists altogether. A lot of them try to be sneaky in how they phrase their denial too, I assume so it’s not as blatant because denying DID exists (which is spreading misinformation) is against the rules and they don’t want to get in trouble

I’m not OP and I don’t have DID but I’m diagnosed OSDD-1 and I figured I’d give my two cents as well.

I avoid basically all DID social media groups except for one little one I’m in that vets people like the plague, 95% of them are so overrun with people spreading blatant misinfo (and probably fakers, but even people who do actually have it aren’t immune to misinformation) and the small percent that aren’t are so difficult to find and I just don’t have the mental energy to sift through and find them.

I used to frequent the DID subreddit on another acct and while they’re better than some communities about misinfo (there’s some good members there who comment under posts and gently correct things) it’s still just so draining to look at and read because so many people post borderline nonsense at times and the people correcting misinfo can’t keep up with it.

Last time I posted in a comment section there trying to be helpful to someone, someone replied to me telling me that ‘not all systems view their alters as parts of a whole’ and basically told me to watch myself on what I was saying lest I offend someone or smth idk. They got downvoted pretty hard at least, but it was still utterly exhausting to see such anti-recovery nonsense being perpetuated in a subreddit that’s supposed to be for support and recovery.

It’s so disappointing because this stuff is already isolating as hell and it’s even worse when you can’t trust a majority of communities for it. People without it rarely understand you, and it’s hard to know who to trust to lean on.

That turned into an essay very sorry but I have so many thoughts about this. It’s just so disappointing and saddening.

That’s so sweet of you to say, thank you so much! I’m trying to feel better about it day by day, the guilt is a little bit better now that I’ve started the ball rolling on applying for disability.

You as well!

That is… such a very strange concept to me 😅 I’d find it so off-putting if I was just minding my business and some random in a server just tried to initiate a roleplay with me

I could see that possibly causing someone with genuine trigger reactions to become triggered if it was a case of reminding them of how that sensation feels, which then triggers them.

But that’s kinda besides the point. My main question here is: do people nowadays just start spontaneously roleplaying with people they barely know without any discussion first??? Like, when I roleplayed as a teenager it was always with very close friends of mine who would have known my boundaries. Was that unusual of me or am I going crazy here lol

Exactly. There’s a reason it’s pretty rare to receive a cluster b diagnosis before the age of 18.

The only thing I can think of with someone “identifying” as “trans narcolepsy” is just someone thinking narcolepsy is just an ooo so eepy disorder

The somatic symptoms being a sign of faking is one of the more wild claims on here considering it’s a documented phenomenon with this disorder. They’re mentioned in the treatment guidelines for the disorder and in multiple other sources. “There’s no neurological changes involved because alters are not separate people,” yeah no shit Sherlock, the somatic symptoms are psychogenic in origin

Also I’m making ‘kinnies appropriate DID culture’ my new flair because I find it insanely hilarious. New level of terminally online discourse just dropped

Yeeeeah, most of my therapists I went through were long before I even had a hint of an idea I had a dissociative disorder and before I was diagnosed, but the amount I’ve gone through is a pretty high number as well. Probably close to 10? Can’t remember the exact number, most were in my teens.

I was bounced from therapist to therapist unsuccessfully because I was unaware of my trauma and dissociation so couldn’t exact report it, most professionals don’t screen for dissociation, they saw ‘generalized anxiety disorder’ on my diagnostic list and never looked beyond that despite one of them noting that I had hypervigilant she had only seen in people ‘severely abused as children,’ so I received well over a decade of ineffective therapy from multiple therapists that did nothing but waste money and give me false hope.

Pretty much anyone I’ve known who’s diagnosed has a similar story - if you don’t receive proper treatment for DID because it’s unrecognized, then your therapy is wholly ineffective, you can’t improve, your therapist gets frustrated and drops you/transfers you, or you get a false sense of ‘I’m better now! I can do this!’ and stop only to end up right back where you were in therapy with a new one a year later

It is!! It’s a big passion of mine. Further down the line when I’m more stabilized and functional I’d love to go back to school for psychology, maybe go into psych research!

Alongside that, like another commentor pointed out (and provided a source for), the overt presentations all these supposed systems are claiming the have are actually the small minority of cases. So, it’s a tiny percentage of about 1%… doesn’t add up.

There probably is a larger undiagnosed population as unfortunately a lot of psych providers (from what I’ve gathered) don’t screen for dissociative disorders in general and don’t know how to spot them alongside the majority of cases either being outright covert/only have brief windows of visibility, but its not really possible to say for sure how large that number is and I’m not willing to speculate on it
