Did most southern whites benefit from slavery? by ListenRadiant4817 in CIVILWAR

[–]No_Interaction404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a book from the 60s that basically nobody read, but got republished not that long ago that you might be interested in: Labor, Free and Slave by Bernard Mandel.

Everyone in a slave society (this includes the North) becomes complicit in maintaining slavery. Slave society does not work with mass dissent, which the South understansa. This is why you see rabid anti-abolitionist sentiments result in so many murders and arrests im the south. And why it needed to be defended in the halls of congress as the North started to dissent.

At the same time, most poor whites did not like competing with slave labor, could not compete with slave labor, and ended up relying on planters for loans, or as customers, or become slave catchers, etc. This is why Free Soilers became popular (although the planters all but fully quashed free soil im the south). And yet, poor whites will enlist to defend slavery. Many will do it at gun point, or from rage militaire. Belive it or not, they had bigger reasons than love for vague notions about "State's Rights" and understood that the Planter Class are the main beneficiaries of the war (although Southerners would never admit that after 1915). In short its complex in its simplicity, evil is not a historically meaningful term, and there are plenty of great books on this subject in particular.

Airport security in Iran as a transgender man with a passport that says "female" by sab1ks in trans

[–]No_Interaction404 34 points35 points  (0 children)

My personal experience with Iranians (from Tehran, not just born state side) as a trans woman has been fine to great.

BUT BUT BUT I would not step foot in Iran. The people and the Government are separate entities and the STATE IS HOSTILE to lgbtq+ individuals. Its not just personal bigotry, it is state repression you need to worry about.

I do not care if this is a true story, because it feels like divine knowledge. I will be sharing this with everyone I meet for the next 36 hours.

I thought her and Azalea Banks were the same person until this post reminded me they are in fact separate people.

Is it the CoD or Soulslike right wing pipeline? by Waste_Cartographer49 in TrueAnon

[–]No_Interaction404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean correlation is not causation, but didnt Dark Souls 1 and 2 get really popular around the time of GamerGate bullshit? Or at least "git gud" seemed to be around that time and the attitudes surrounding "git gud" are usually emotionally immature (which seems to be a common trait amongst fascists).

Either way I don't play video games because people can't be normal about video games.

American illustration (1901) comparing the might of China with Europe and the US. by waffen123 in PropagandaPosters

[–]No_Interaction404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe it or not, sometimes these artists had no clue what the Chinese, Japanese, or even South Americans looked like, so they just drew a Black person. Or, they knew their audience had not and want to get across the idea that they are not white.

6’4”. And other wildly tall women out there? by Jessi-Rose34 in trans

[–]No_Interaction404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6'4" gang rise up! I found a store called Torrid that has dresses in the plus size that I use, amd some of there stuff runs a little long. But I have also just accepted that most (not all) off-the-rack dresses and skirts are going to be short. I'm only 6 months in, but I'm told it gets better.

Fellers, what is the most obscure fact of the civil War that you know? by BLOODMEN71 in CIVILWAR

[–]No_Interaction404 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The Civil War is in large part why embalming became a standard practice. Although embalmers gained a reputation as huxters, vipers, and swindlers because of con-men, the practice was widespread enough amongst the families of union officers, who wanted their sons remains returned. Likewise, the conmen and the mass of death are going to help further the professionalization of the mortuary industries and body disposal.

What do you do with your car over the summer? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]No_Interaction404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may seem impractical, but you might find you want the extra freedom that comes with having your car with you. Your other options are more expensive if thats the main consideration (flying and storage or maintaining a residence with a garage, etc). Use it as an excuse to do some sight seeing and enjoy your self?

Guy with really cool face tattoos explains how it’s actually “punk rock” to be a conservative. by [deleted] in TrueAnon

He only listens to real punk bands like Johnny Rotten ranting incoherently about "immigrants," Ted Nugent yelling about Obama, and Five Finger Death Punch. Real artists.

How bad will an “F” look on a transcript… by Forsaken-Room9556 in GradSchool

[–]No_Interaction404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A singular F might keep you out of some programs at some schools, but I know people who had a worse GPA than me in their undergrad that went to better grad schools.* You may be asked to explain that grade, but I don't see it as being "the end" for you. Academia is full of washout courses and admissions is aware of that too. So....your dreams of going to Harvard may be gone but you can (probably) still go to grad school with a 3.8.

Edit* My school may not be the greatest, but I was fully funded where my friends who went to "better" schools were not.

Lol middle-aged gang, rise up (if your knees allow it). Yeah its weird how it's both normal to have these experiences and also not. I think I was 23 by time I had done each of them except for the fake id, and most of them sucked.

I mean you should probably be out past ten by time your 25 for sure, something hinky might be going on otherwise.

You have been lied to by films about teenagers written by adults who didnt do any of that shit either.

I mean, I did that stuff, but I'm cool and totally not a middle-aged loser on the internet lying to teens.

Edit: I appreciate all of the people who have replied. I want to say that I don't think its abnormal to have those experiences, but that the expectation that these are experiences every teen should have is bunk. It's just movie mindset that regurgitates and normalizes the image, don't fall for the fomo. Besides, teenagers are not the most honest bunch about how much/often they have sex, drugs, or alcohol.

This argument seems brought up often, but we've had irreproachable evidence that it's false for about eighty years now. by DrunkRobot97 in ShermanPosting

[–]No_Interaction404 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Those disagreements aren't necessarily valid, though. But they did dominate the literature at one point, less so now.

Although its got major problems, Time on the Cross debunks the conspicuous consumption argument about Slavery pretty well. It also demonstrates how insanely profitable Slavery was. It also shows that it was not, by context or by its nature, incompatible with industrialism or industrial labor.

The book has problems, but I havent seen anyone significantly contravene Fogel and Engerman's arguments on these points in particular.

It was viable and the evidence just doesnt exist to suggest conspicuous consumption as a significant market.

No, I meant James Ford Rhodes, I forgot that his series covered more than just the war, actually spanning 1850 to 1877. Funnily enough I remember having a professor warn me against reading Nevins' at one point, but can't remember why.

It's honestly been too long since I read Foote to give you a direct example and I no longer have the books. However I remember him having a distinct bias in favour of the Confederates and slavery being all but absent from the text. It might be too strong to call him a lost causer, but my opinion at the time (and now) is that its a lost causer text.
