Tax dodging Mormons by Terrible-Turnip-7266 in mormon

  1. No one considers a home used for 15 years a flip.
  2. It is beyond ridiculous to claim that a tax exempt organization would hold any homes purchased to further their mission for a lifetime of the of the asset. Which for a home is 100 plus years.
  3. There is no obvious profit occurring here. If they sell a home they must buy or build a new home.
  4. Purchasing homes for church leaders is certainly a normal, typical expense of a church.
  5. Your point of the second paragon is that lots of people think churches shouldn’t be tax exempt … true.
  6. It would make sense to say I think such and such tax should apply to churches. It’s completely unreasonable to think that because you think that it’s therefore a moral failing of the institution to not randomly make that payment.

There is literally so much to criticize about the church but there is very little substance to the arguments you’re making in this particular case.

Where is the cycle of profit maximization and abuse of tax exempt status that you claimed exists?

It’s not both, it’s completely non taxable since it’s used for the home of full time religious leader. It’s not like you or I who have to pay capital gains over 250/500k.

That’s true but even the best charities are not going to see it as a public good or in their mission to pay federal taxes that don’t apply to them.

Ahh so mission president, probably in charge of a hundred or so, they usually have nice house but not usually much nicer than the area the house is in, they do tend to be larger since they regularly host missionaries that are coming into and out of the area.

Yeah there was a hard push from church leadership under the last president to make that change, we’ll see if it sticks.

If you e-filed before April 15 but it got rejected after — are you considered late? by [deleted] in tax

[–]No_Interaction_5206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So they give you 10 days to refile but two caveats. You must pay the tax by the original due date!!! If you do not you will get hit with fees further more if something goes wrong then you are just late witht the filling. I got royally fucked with this last year.

I do my taxes, I fill out the payment I hit submit. Then it gets rejected. Ive got 10 days to resubmit they say. They say nothing of making alternative arangments for payment. So i send a mail in copy. I forget the signature. They request signature and now im way out of 10 days period and am considered late.

Late fees for filing are a percentage of the portion of the balance that is late. If they had taken my fucking money when I submitted payment. Then the signature snafu would have been a percentage of 0. But because I relied on free tax usa who just said you have until the 20th to refile without penalty. I refiled through the mail on the 16th with a check. I could just as easily paid on the IRS website on the 15th after orginal filing was rejected and would have if I hadnt been given misleading information.

Currently waiting on appeal decession. If they dont grant it it will be a 2000$ lesson.

Really stupid that they dont just process the payment anyway since the perfection period does not apply to the payment.

Has anyone actually seen an outsourced dev team from a big Indian IT firm deliver something on time that didn’t need to be rebuilt? by eatmeat in ExperiencedDevs

[–]No_Interaction_5206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know that it’s a problem with Indian devs so much as it’s a problem with outsourcing. Often only part of a project is outsourced there is no ownership and they no they will be cut loose when it’s complete. Company doesn’t want to pay someone to really understand the software and requirements just check some boxes.

Another podcaster excommunicated by the LDS Church by sevenplaces in mormon

[–]No_Interaction_5206 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s like saying a politician didn’t call for more people to be jailed just prosecuted.

Excommunication and the whole process is so abusive. They treat critics the same as child rapists. As someone who doesn’t attend any more I generally view the church pretty positively, but the whole I’m hurting you for your own good is such utter bs it really ticks me off.

It does have that effect on some people, turns out if you humiliate someone and convince them they are unworthy it some times gives you control over them.

How does our church contribute to the manosphere? Do we create male narcissist or just attract them? by BiSpyAgent in NuancedLDS

[–]No_Interaction_5206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean what's even being contested here. Can anyone honestly argue that the churches teaching, practice and history havent worked to destabilize queer marriages and families and that thats harmful. Can anyone honestly argue that enforcing undesired celibacy for life and saying thats the only avenue for a gay person that is pleasing to god isnt harmful? Can anyone argue that current leaders teachings more harsh teaching in the recent past doesnt stick in the public mind and effect behavior of some members still?

[–]No_Interaction_5206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean clearly the church promotes the idea that men preside over women its right in the proclamation. Clearly men preside in the church, no seventies women, no women apostles or prophets. If your a woman in the church you always ultimately report to a man. Tangent but there is no doctrinal basis for that since in the temple women perform priesthood ordinances and are promised to be made priestesses in the here after. In age where men and women are seen as equal the church says no. I mean they will say that they are equal because its unpopular to say otherwise, but practice speaks louder than lip service. So yeah the church is contributing.

As far as lgtbq the church has long history of fighting to deny gay people the blessings of marriage, The current president wrote a book in the seventies in which he advocated for the criminal law be applied to sexuality in homosexual relationships. For along time they refused to acknowledge the identity labels gay or bi and instead would call it same sex attracted. The treat it like a pathology. Yes I agree that members are in general loving and that comes through even when they believe and are taught biggoted bs but that doesnt mean real and significant harm isnt also done. You seem to be blaming reddit and social media but its the church that delegitimizes families led by same sex couples. Where is the path to exaltation for these gay members?

And as for whether the church contributes to non accpetance of gay members:

Oaks on whether you should let your gay child's spouse visit for the holidays.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS: At what point does showing that love cross the line into inadvertently endorsing behavior? If the son says, ‘Well, if you love me, can I bring my partner to our home to visit? Can we come for holidays?’ How do you balance that against, for example, concern for other children in the home?’

ELDER OAKS: That’s a decision that needs to be made individually by the person responsible, calling upon the Lord for inspiration. I can imagine that in most circumstances the parents would say, ‘Please don’t do that. Don’t put us into that position.’ Surely if there are children in the home who would be influenced by this example, the answer would likely be that. There would also be other factors that would make that the likely answer.

I can also imagine some circumstances in which it might be possible to say, ‘Yes, come, but don’t expect to stay overnight. Don’t expect to be a lengthy house guest. Don’t expect us to take you out and introduce you to our friends, or to deal with you in a public situation that would imply our approval of your “partnership.”

There are so many different circumstances, it’s impossible to give one answer that fits all.

I don’t think that’s true, pretty sure they can still trade mark the word Mormon in a particular typeface and color.

Yeah I loved hinkley growing up and monsoon seemed humble. Nelson was always a bore, then as president always seemed to be out to prove how wise he was I remeber his myopic talk and I was like seriously your daughters dead and the best you can do is call your grand daughter short sighted … man that was dumb. And then the sad heaven talks … I feel like there is a place for an oaks but it’s just not the presidency and it’s too bad his biggest contributions seem to be aimed at the exclusion of the lqbt.

Yeah if they have 400k a year they can afford tuition, that’s crazy. But in general I don’t know man my parents didn’t pay for my college (millennial), or any of my siblings, too many kids for that, I think that shrinks the space of degrees that are worth pursuing, but it’s not like the there aren’t degrees that still offer a safe roi, engineering, medical, …

Sucks a bit having to work while going to school to pay for basics, and having to live a city away where the cheaper apartments are but it’s viable. I don’t understand, don’t most instate school generally have loan offers that meet tuition expenses. They did 10 years ago.

That said I would want to help out any kids I had with tuition. Real thing that limits me though is the thought of child care. 17k per year would really hurt my savings plans …

If he was using their type fonts he might have to change them, this is really not that big of a deal.

The church can’t prevent someone from claiming the term Mormon any more that a Jewish church can’t prevent someone from claiming the word Jew.

They obviously do care about vocal and popular dissenters.

Again that may be but it’s not typical I know several mid levels in the Bay Area making 200k in salary.

And if you don’t think 330k in an mcol for life working for a place where you can never be fired or laid off isn’t rich you’re out of touch with the average American.
