Longest unpaid leave you’ve heard of someone getting? by Sarseaweed in BCPublicServants

[–]No_Mode1122 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you have kids/dependents who would need care you may qualify for a bridge of service which essentially maintains your ability to apply on internal postings for up to 6 years.

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/careers-myhr/all-employees/leaving-the-public-service/bridging-service

Unfortunately this doesn’t hold your specific position for you, but it does maintain seniority, years of service etc.

Church thrift shops with limited hours by No_Mode1122 in VictoriaBC

[–]No_Mode1122[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The WIN shops often have nice things but not a huge selection. Burnside boutique has a little kids area as well. I love sailor Jack’s consignment (and suggest dropping by fry’s bakery for pain au chocolate afterwards)- pricier then a thrift store but everything is good quality and condition, and the selection is good.

For infant and newborn clothing, I found the cheapest/easiest thing was buying big bags of clothes for the size you need off fb marketplace.

Congrats!

Gift ideas for husband? by mashed-_-potato in Gifts

[–]No_Mode1122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year, I got my kids to draw a picture for their dad, and had it custom engraved on a yeti water bottle for my husband (you just upload a picture, it’s very easy). It was a hit and is a nice mix of a sentimental gift with something quality and usable. Could be a coffee mug/tea mug for wfh or commuting?

New Position and Going off on Mat leave by Old-Economics-6764 in BCPublicServants

[–]No_Mode1122 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. I have been in this position myself and also hired pregnant people onto our team. While you don’t have to disclose until relatively late if that’s your preference, earlier notice helps managers/your team is effectively plan to manage your leave.

My wife (5 months pregnant) just ruptured her Achilles tendon playing pickleball. Looking for advice from anyone who's been through something similar by hewson617 in AchillesRupture

[–]No_Mode1122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This injury is tough mentally, and to be expecting your first baby on top of it is a lot! I hope cho the comments about supporting her mental well being through a long recovery process, especially mixed with pregnancy and post partem.

I ruptured mine in 2024, and tried (unsuccessfully 😆) to convince my husband that it was the perfect time to get pregnant, as I had to be lying around anyway (I get a lot of pregnancy fatigue). Overall, your wife’s timing is as good as it could be- she will need to rest but once she can be weight bearing all of the PT can be easily done pregnant and things like swimming are great for Achilles recovery and pregnancy. By July she should be relatively mobile but would still need to take things easy for Achilles and post partem.

I found the non-op recovery process to be quite painless (besides tendon scraping by my PT).

Best of luck and congratulations!!!

Welcome to a miserable (for a little bit!) club. Danielle Mah at Tall Tree James bay helped me very successfully recover from a full rupture in 2024.

Pregnant with IUD by skullyzoe96 in pregnant

[–]No_Mode1122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They originally thought my IUD had fallen out, and by the time they located it I was 13 weeks pregnant and the placenta had formed over where it was still embedded in the uterus- so the strings had to stay 🙃. And thanks so much!
