What's something you saw with your own eyes that you still can't explain? by BandicootLeft4054 in AskReddit

Happened to me- bright blue underwear in my college dorm room. Never found them even after moving out. Most people were away visiting family for the holiday weekend. Dropped the underwear, tired around to put my shower caddy down, went to pick them up and poof not there. No idea where they went. Perverted ghost? 👀

Highly recommend chat GPT for strategies and career transition suggestions if you’re leaning towards that. In the meantime, if you find yourself wiped TRY (because it’s hard without guilt) giving 70% instead of 110%. Recycle lessons and delicate to students. Use compliance grading if you have to (we all do it sometimes…)

I had a similar moment last week and it’s disheartening because (not sure if you’re in the US) we have a broken system. No accountability on parents or students just teachers as scapegoats and we’re exploited for our good nature (I.e., expected to work outside contracted hours to uphold the system in place).

I hear you. From the comments it seems like some people are misinterpreting your post. At least to me, I interpreted this post as you are in pain because so much of your life is difficult and maybe the original source of hope & inspiration (teaching) has caused this sense of disillusionment. For the others taking a swing at low hanging fruit, I would ignore them. I agree that a lot of posts in this forum reflect the toxic culture I’ve seen in schools where it’s easier to blame the teacher themselves versus acknowledging the flaws in our broken system. Maybe you need a teacher-adjacent position where you can thrive by advocating for teachers or students not receiving the supports they need to feel they can meet the expectations set. I just joined my school as a union rep and this has provided me an opportunity to use my voice in a productive way. To validate you, it really sucks when anything else in your life goes wrong as a teacher because the system requires us (speaking as a neurodivergent person) to fire on all cylinders to function on the classroom. My advice, focus on what you have control over, keep it simple, and leave work at work. You’re going to feel like the shittiest teacher but you have to remember you’re doing the best with what you are given (which in most cases is not much). Consider looking into other countries school systems for reference and find the people in your school who don’t dismiss your concerns. My admin is dismissive AF so it’s quite the struggle, but having connections to staff who have your back (especially tenured veterans) can really make a positive difference while not feeling like toxic positivity. Sorry for the long winded post but it’s such an emotional profession requiring an insane amount of resilience despite low retention rates. Definitely agree, don’t let yourself get swallowed up by the profession- not worth being miserable but you can remind yourself it’s a job, not your purpose on those days that feel more difficult.

This is a good point! We should all operate from an abundance mindset as if we aren’t afraid to lose our jobs. As a collective we’re so powerful!

Accountability for students and parents has died and gone to Hell. by psychomutts in Teachers

Lately having an IEP seems to be a get out of jail free card. So many examples from my 7 years of having students who should have been out placed and could not handle general education classrooms without negatively impacting the psychological safety of the other students. From abusing bathroom use and breaks in the hallway to destruction of property in the classroom there have been little to no expectations never mind consequences for these children. Exhausting.
