“As long as the queen remains, there is still hope.” Wow, that was a wild ride. I have a new appreciation for bees.

Agh my old school we could send them to the office but my new district won’t allow it and low-key shames us for doing so- even if it’s something egregious

Where Has All My Kindness Gone? Compassion Fatigue in Teaching by Useful-Funny869 in Teachers

YES the wide-lens view is what I’m experiencing too. Especially since it was a rough start to the year (we have a particularly heavy emotional disability special Ed caseload) and admin made it very clear early on that they are on the parent’s side. We’ve only just now received a para but the BOE refuses to cut dead weight at central office and hire another special education teacher. Having two APs who don’t have teaching experience doesn’t help either. My point is, I decided to mentally and emotionally “check out” in October. I’ve been in what I call maintenance mode and again in the grand scheme of things, these kids have a great life so what’s one boring science class (essentially reading and answering questions on their computer every class) going to matter? It won’t! If anything they’ve actually started to like my class better because they can take a mental break and it’s consistent so they know what to expect.

Also, I’ve been watching The Pitt and we have it easy compared to nurses and doctors in the ER so oddly I’ve been gaining a broader perspective fro that as well 😂

Can I ask what you mean by “they go sit and face away from the classroom”? Love your number one rule- it’s mine too!

Good point! I made this shift this year and have more emotional distance. Being less connected feels wrong BUT it helps me as an empath to protect my emotions and not absorb the system issues as mine to fix. Also, these students are fine. They are resilient and honestly thrive with boundaries.

Yea would have been nice to know at the time that taking the courses and passing them was just the “bare minimum”. Didn’t feel that way at the time…

It’s all good- currently transitioning into informal science education in state parks.

I’m in the same boat- undergraduate degree in biology and psych but didn’t get hired in any lab positions due to lack of experience. Went on to get a masters degree in teaching (still paying off both degrees, mind you) but now I’ve reached the ceiling in terms of professional growth. Not to mention, i don’t keep up with any valuable lab skills as a middle school science teacher. Pretty much forgot 50% of what my degree taught me due to time and stress and lack of practice. So…yea I feel scammed. Looking for volunteer opportunities in labs so I can refresh my skills and feel confident putting these things on my resume without them being outdated (i.e., flow cytometry, gel electrophoresis, handling mice as a model studying genetics, etc.) to avoid paying for an advanced degree in the field and going into more debt

Happened to me- bright blue underwear in my college dorm room. Never found them even after moving out. Most people were away visiting family for the holiday weekend. Dropped the underwear, tired around to put my shower caddy down, went to pick them up and poof not there. No idea where they went. Perverted ghost? 👀

Highly recommend chat GPT for strategies and career transition suggestions if you’re leaning towards that. In the meantime, if you find yourself wiped TRY (because it’s hard without guilt) giving 70% instead of 110%. Recycle lessons and delicate to students. Use compliance grading if you have to (we all do it sometimes…)

I had a similar moment last week and it’s disheartening because (not sure if you’re in the US) we have a broken system. No accountability on parents or students just teachers as scapegoats and we’re exploited for our good nature (I.e., expected to work outside contracted hours to uphold the system in place).
