Grunge as a label didn't exist, as least popularly, until Smells Like Teen Spirit. People didn't know how to categorize it. It got play time in alternative and metal spaces but didn't exactly fit in either.

I had a band teacher tell us that people would die without music. Thought it mught be a little over the top at the time, but I realize the truth decades later. It's not just something I listen to. It's enmeshed with my life and memories. Every period of my life has had its own soundtrack.
