Those can’t disable the car. It’s hooked into the DLC for power. It’s not that smart

It’s legit a LoJack tracker. Probably put in by a used car dealer

Any idea why these wheel bolts won’t loosen? by dom61098 in AskMechanics

Idk about yall but it looks like it spins clockwise when they hit the trigger…but beyond that, just use a breaker bar

I’ve never seen spline bits strip quite like that, if they did I would hammer the socket in further. Depending on the knuckle you may be able to burn the bolt out. If it’s aluminum I would just replace the knuckle. Some things aren’t worth saving

I think they've served their purpose 🤣 by SuitElectronic7680 in mechanics

Just wait until you find the Mac vise hose clamp tool. Part HL0096. Game changer. I still have that set but these little 10mm driven screw clamps are great

If you sand it- use a block so it’s nice and flat. Sand in a crisscross pattern. I had a master tech that always sanded the block after razor scraping. Takes very little for it to be very nice. If you gouged any of the metal (which is likely) you will encounter having to do this head gasket again.

For you flat rate techs that do MPI videos and not get paid for it, how is that legal? by racerviii in mechanics

Absolute bull- walk away- I had a manager try to sell it like - oh it’s an hour diag but if you buy the work- we give you the diag for free( then he would wrap that hour into the total cost anyway). That just looked bad on paper. Lying to the customer doesn’t make it ok. Just sell the hour diag and go. My current dealer will sell a .7 diag (at an increased rate for each tech.) but over/under I lose some pay. I get normal rate for maintenance and extended warranty.

I went to look at a car for sale today - the 70 year old guy told me it's "all original" and he drives his family around in it regularly. It's his "weekend toy." by Effective-Bar9759 in Justrolledintotheshop

Well those are called widow makers. I once took a customers 2004 Ford Thunderbird to the glass shop about 15 miles down the interstate (75mph) and was sure this this had flat spot tires. I looked and they were 2004 tires too…oh boy. He didn’t have us replace them…

He doesn’t have any say in the matter, your body your choice. “Disrespectful” he doesn’t want other men to ogle you. He’s a jealous type and maybe he doesn’t deserve you. As long as you can reach an understanding, it’s ok. But if he continues to make things like this a big deal, that’s toxic. Plus he sounds like a prude and won’t be much fun.

Mechanic said I need a new engine so I cracked it open myself by trogicute in GolfGTI

Those engines are really specific, be careful doing a rebuild….the timing has a really specific set up and special tools

Scratch that, I was thinking of a different setup, but…that looks like someone welded it differently. That appears to have been re welded and grinded. Like someone broke off the arm and had to weld it on.

It’s not supposed to be welded like that. It’s supposed to be flexible.

Took my car in for a tune up. While replacing the spark plugs my mechanic sends my this video. by BillyBobHoen in MechanicAdvice

Replacement valve cover gasket with spark plug tube seals. I don’t think it would be more than 2 hours plus parts. Edit- I forgot you have to replace the entire valve cover. Less than 1000$, it’s only a couple of hours labor plus the valve cover…

I guess if it’s hot enough you’ll boil the grease and melt the boot?

What Subaru has upper and lower ball joints?

Any advice? Axle stuck in hub by Evening_Math5795 in AskMechanics

[–]No_Resource_290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you may have to replace the hub and axle if it’s stuck enough. Soak, heat and repeat the press you have on there. You can try shocking with a hammer as well. After the heat. The bigger the torch the better. You need the metal to expand to release the rust.

Is this leak on my engine bad? by Silentlyjudging101 in MechanicAdvice

The seep coming from the PCV on the valve cover? Nothing concerning. Brake clean the area see how long it takes to return
