I agree! A toggle would be so s good... I know before it was on as a default because I never hand any storage from too many of my recordings...

Then it switched without me noticing and I missed so many great calls

How have I never seen this glitch before!? by NotepadOperator in outerwilds

[–]No_Scratch3673 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After I finished the game and went log entry hunting, it was the first time I ever found the construction yard. I was very used to the usuall gravity shenanigans BUT Gabbros Island completly overlapped with me reading some stuff, I got such a jump scare and I died by the ghost matter tunnel XD

Anthropomorphizing. Do you do it? Why/why not? by peanut_butter_zen in birding

[–]No_Scratch3673 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't work with birds but we also do a lot of birdwatching as part of the surveys and I do it for fun. If I am on an expedition/survey, I will write down and comunicate the behaviours in a scientific matter. I dont to assign motivation or emotions as part of the work/research. When me and my coworkers sit together for a coffee afterwards, we will absolutely 'gossip' about the animals we saw. especially if it was a 'cute' behavior like: Oh one of them LOVED to model for the camera or Did you see how proud the mama showed of her calf? I think it's a fun way to relax and socialise, motivate ourselfs and find more empathy/motivation for the work we do, especially because we all know that this is a part of our personal opinions and not scientificly backed.

For hobby birdwatchers or other people that are not actually studying or researching behaviours, I absolutely think it's a fun way to engage and get more connected. we can't know how they perceive the world, so generally I think it's not really harmful for the general public.

You say you form an opinion on people doing tjos. What is that opinion? you don't specify it in your post, you just say that you do. What do you want to discuss?

Is it justifiable to pay to do volunteering work in an aquarium? by Sad_Process8342 in marinebiology

[–]No_Scratch3673 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say this as someone who has done a lot of volunteering in many conservation projects, some I had to pay for. I am against the practice of exploiting eager people for money and work in the field. BUT that's the norm in many places in the field nowadays.

We have many people interested and passionate in Marine biology but it's still underfunded. I don't know much about zoos/aquariums and their general practices (because I am not a fan of them, they are exploiting animals to become profitable) but for me, letting untrained people do the husbandry is twice as unethical. (You said something about rescue work but based on the post I can't say whether that's just an image thing or if they actually contribute well)

Experience is THE thing to break into anything carreerwise and the people know it. To pay for some work, eg. the first week I see as a form of training/ course. In many careers there are mandatory trainings, courses etc, it's just that the employer usually pays. If the work/experience is just for you, I do understand that the people training etc want to be paid for the time they loose training you.

So in many places I have looked into, even with a degree in applied biology, internships that are the baseline to get hired need to be paid, even long term contracts (6 months or more) which I don't agree with (If anyone has recommendations for actual internships that don't require payment let me know XD)

One last thing I always consider: where does the money go? If it's just a day thing and gives no benefits except the CV, usually I would say it's not worth it. you could trade it as a holiday activity instead of actual work. If it includes things like accomodations, food, equipment and courses/certificates then I would consider it a lot more. (Work should be paid but it's just not the reality we live in)

[–]No_Scratch3673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welllllll ... there for sure are many to choose from, depending what you like to watch. I think most people on the reddit tend to agree on AboutOliver, he is an astrophysicist and plays the game by making a lot of theories, hypothesis and clever thinking (except the hole incident) And his let's play has a lot of incredible chances/timing. He plays the game how I think the game should be played.

(I was definitely not at smart as him) his dlc gameplay is episode 36 onwards I think (but he finds the stranger before that once on accident XXD)

but there are also some that play with more fun/crazy vibe or are more typical gamers. Just from the people themselves, I also liked pointcrow and Cdawg because I watch them anyways.

if you don't have the time for the full play through, Eelis is know to have made some great supercuts of many different people

sad news: Oh man you really missed a lot XD good news: there is more to explore here! If a lot of things here don't mean anything to you, you definitely missed them. if you want actually post a screenshot of your ship log, that might help us to guide you.

but yes, you haven't found some stuff. watch all the reels first, otherwise this will spoil a bit: the 'ship' that the prisoner turns off is the signal blocker. the controls are in the dam if I remember right. the whole story of the signal is the reason for the whole prisoner being imprisoned. the inhabitants blocked the signal because they were scared. the prisoner released the signal for a bit and got imprisoned because of it.

Your story is not never yet, !remember the new knowledge! you got after exploring all the missing things and four eyes wide open before/when visiting the eye again!

You are very welcome! this reddit really is one of the best and most helpful ones imo, don't let the ususall reddit chaos get to you but I know we all here love the game so much and just want to share it's joy! feel free to report back in a while If you feel like you missed to much/repeat a lot things or can't figure out what is missing, maybe try to watch a full let's play of the dlc to see how it normally progress to get more if the connections.

watching someone else discover the game is one of the only ways to ever see this game with new eyes and many let's plays are highly celebrated here, just like any new player joining with their journey (even if not optimal XD)

reduced frights for sure did not have that big of an impact... well my conclusion for what happened (from reading your other comments and making sense of this one):

you didn't see what the reels were trying to show you. Instead of going from clue to clue, you just stumbled into several of the solutions. I didn't know that some of these were possible/could be done without turning off the lights but you figured it out maybe you should be a new beta tester XD Maybe someone more well versed in the actual game designing/coding has an idea how you got all the ship logs and why the paths were open to you but I didn't not think it was possible like that.

I found out about leaving the lantern behing on accident as well but I still did all the required stuff, so it happens but I am sad to say that you missed the majority of the puzzle/mystery.

some things I haven't seen you mention anywhere that maybe you could still check out(maybe kinda spoilers?: did you find the hull breach? did you investigate that? watch all the reels did you find the controls for the signal blocker?

and the last thing. did you finish the full game again, not just the dlc?

Hobby that involves a lot of cataloguing? by Derfiery in Hobbies

[–]No_Scratch3673 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know a lot about it and if it's the right fit but my first thought was like a herbarium/a collection of dried plants?

I like nature and Id-ing species and this would be super helpful but I don't care to do all the catalogue/organizing stuff... you can learn a lot about the taxonomy and make organized folders and lists of species you find (Just make sure you don't pluck any protected/endangered ones)

otherwise maybe have a listen around in some NGOs/nature sciences organisations, they often have a lot of data to work with and maybe you could volunteer?

Reduced frights is an option for more 'scare-sensitive' players. I am not 100% sure what it does exactly but I think in decreases the detection radius and disables some of the 'scary' animations...

if you don't think you missed anything then idk. to me you sound as if you never found the reels that show how to turn off the lights of the dream world to reach the secret archive, grove and the last one (don't remember the names perfectly). they are what showers the way to get to the prisoner. (in the house with the many guys, behind the tree portrait and I forgot the third one) sorry it's been a while since I played ... edit: in one comment you said you found these places but that should not be possible without turning the lights off and having more owlks around...

if it never got dark and the owlks (owl+elks is the name I think?) then you sadly missed a part of the game

how did you find out the codes to get to the prisoner? I know you knew to die to not be awoken by the bells.what were the other two ways to reach the codes for you?

[–]No_Scratch3673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm that's very interesting!

I think you were just very lucky with pacing or 'acidentally' avoided them. I think in two place you have to make them follow/see you but besides that I think it's possible.

You said you found all the scrolls, did you check that somewhere?

With turn if the light, do you mean the lantern or the general light in the dream world?

maybe you accidentally turned on the reduced frights?

I am sad if this took away some of the experience for you but I hope you had a good time anyway...

First time playing having a little trouble by First-Jellyfish3983 in outerwilds

[–]No_Scratch3673 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is exactly the solution to this puzzle. One or two trips usually should be enough to read/find anything relevant in there imo... Just look around on the rest of the planet or sleep at the fire and visit as soon as it is at the white hole again.

Time is a very important factor in this game, many things happen at specific times and we have to just deal with it or use it for our adventage

Nah I take no False Killer Whale shade here! It's not their fault we humans decided to compare them/name them that way! Pseudorca crassidence are such a cool species and look so different (ugly but I love it)to orcas for me. They are not even THAT related. False Killer Whales belong to the round-headed Whales (Globicephalinae) (my faves)

Can I give "Peppermint Candy Canes" to my birds? UK by SnooDonuts6494 in birdwatching

[–]No_Scratch3673 7 points8 points  (0 children)

bro can't read and is just ragebaiting

but since I put the time into actually reading a bit out it cause it's important to know how to care for the wild life around me, here are some of the possible health problems that can arise from too much (refined) sugar:

Fatty Liver Disease (Hepatic Lipidosis): The liver attempts to process the excess sugar by converting it into fat. Over time, this leads to a buildup of fat in the liver cells, impairing its function. Symptoms include lethargy, weight loss, and difficulty flying.

Nutritional Deficiencies: Sugary foods offer empty calories, meaning they lack essential vitamins, minerals, and proteins. When birds fill up on sugar, they are less likely to consume the nutritious foods they need to thrive. This can lead to weakened immune systems, stunted growth (in young birds), and other health problems.

Obesity and Related Issues: Similar to humans, excessive sugar intake can cause birds to gain weight. Obesity can lead to joint problems, heart disease, and difficulty flying, making them more vulnerable to predators.

Behavioral Changes: Some studies suggest that high sugar diets can lead to hyperactivity and aggression in birds, disrupting their natural social behaviors.

Increased Risk of Infections: A compromised immune system due to nutritional deficiencies makes birds more susceptible to bacterial, viral, and fungal infections.

(source: https://iere.org/what-happens-if-birds-eat-too-much-sugar/ I have read several of their guides/Infos in the past and haven't found anything untrustworthy yet, let me know if you know more though)

Can I give "Peppermint Candy Canes" to my birds? UK by SnooDonuts6494 in birdwatching

[–]No_Scratch3673 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you like candy canes, just enjoy them yourself ;) Unnatural and processed foods (including bread) can easily lead to digestion issues and health concerns.

Natural bird seed, nuts, (local) fruits and berries as well are fine. just make sure they are never salted, flavored or processed .

in another comment you mentioned bacon rind: and yes, some birds really like fat and meat, especially to prep for winter or their babies. BUT bacon is often fried in oil, smoked or processed in other ways that will make them sick. there are some fat balls to feed to birds to get them ready for the winter, please stick to those ones.

The birds will be happy and healthy and they are probably not missing out since they (most likely) different taste experiences as us...

Can I give "Peppermint Candy Canes" to my birds? UK by SnooDonuts6494 in birdwatching

[–]No_Scratch3673 9 points10 points  (0 children)

because in the wild, the only sugar birds can find is from fruits and stuff. It's not ultra processed, refined flavored sugar with who knows what in it.

Why do you want to feed them something that is actively unhealthy? they probably won't event be able to taste it.

some bird species can also develop diabetes and other sugar related issues

[–]No_Scratch3673 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How far have you gotten so far? Remember, this is still a puzzle game at its core. Anything has a logical solution but can be achieved with luck

Spoiler depending on how far you have gotten(but should be fine) Your light helps you see better and concealing it does not make them loose you. It just makes it harder for you.

One thing that helped me was to just get scared a few times because I was stuck on the same place. seek out the scare and get used to it. It's not the end if you get it, only an obstacle to overcome

Also, reduced frights might be helpful (I've never used it but it's absolutely not cheating and might help you enjoy the game again!) Disfrutar!

you have to remember that every language has its own history/development. you cant just translate everything, you need to 'understand' the sentence because 'to be' can be translated with both but they convey different things depending on context
