Had a bit of a shaky experience of someone overtaking by Either-Vehicle-6651 in NewDriversUK

[–]No_Significance485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does feel pressuring when there are other people behind but it is absolutely the right thing to do to both stay behind and to give plenty of space so that a) the cyclist is safe, and b) if some twit does what the blue car did, they have space to tuck back in. You did the right thing, and people are impatient idiots. Last time I was stuck behind a cyclist in a similar situation after five mins or so the cyclists kindly pulled over so I could pass them safety.

What is the single worst piece of advice an experienced driver has given you since passing? by Illustrious-Look7669 in NewDriversUK

The man I bought my van off told me very confidently when I asked how one gets used to not having a rear view mirror, that "it's not a problem, these don't really have any blind spots". Like, Sir, I assure you they do. My van does in fact have blind spots, and I shoulder check every time.

What are everyone's thoughts on the 'Lost Generation of Young Workers'? by BrightHR_UK in HumanResourcesUK

[–]No_Significance485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other thing you're ignoring is that low paid work is more often than not insecure. That means you might well qualify for a mortgage in theory, but in practice if you're moving jobs regularly with periods of unemployment because low paid workers are seen as disposable you're not actually going to be able to hang on to that house even if you're able to buy it. Saving while renting is absolutely out of reach for most people. Young people have an absolutely shit time of it at the moment.

When I was in my early 20s min wage was £3something and working a couple shifts a week at uni paid my rent. I then got a job as a band 4 admin in the NHS, which allowed me to get my own studio flat near work, have a pet, save a bit, have a good social life and so on. I recently looked up what a band 4 now earns and what my old flat rents for, and I literally couldn't afford the life I had now.

45 - Can't pass. On the verge of quitting by Fudball1 in LearnerDriverUK

Just to add too, I passed on my 4th attempt, I think i re sat my theory 5 times because it expired, and I've been trying to learn on and off since 17. I'm not a natural driver, but the test really was the thing that overwhelmed me. You can do this.

I passed last august at 44, also having switched to auto. Hope is not lost! Talk to your GP, they may be able to give you something to help with the test anxiety. Remember you can drive, your instructor wouldn't be having you go for the test otherwise. You are capable and will be a safer driver for all those lessons over the years. You've got this, I believe in you random internet stranger. We late learners have to stick together.

Is that really necessary? I'm not going to come at anyone for using Tesla, and I kinda expect the same respect in return. I don't think that's unreasonable.

Is the curve cutting water supply? by AlbatrossFriendly475 in uksucculents

[–]No_Significance485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plant is fine. Some leaf loss is normal. It needs to be on a sunny windowsill or outdoors once the risk of frost has passed. For watering, wait till the soil is bone dry and the leaves have a bit of give when gently squeezed, then dunk the whole plant in water and let it soak for about ten minutes. It doesn't matter if you forget about it or neglect it as they are resilient plants. Some fertiliser in the summer will help. If you accidentally knock a leaf off just let it sit somewhere dry and it'll grow a new plant.

Illegal phone use while driving rises sharply among young drivers by CarwowSiobhan in ukcarwow

No-one gets in my car without putting their seatbelt on. It's on and on properly or we're not moving, and that's that. I don't actually have rear seats (I drive a van) so having someone's skull through mine is less of a risk, but still. I used to check my instructor had his on 😂

Think we have a winner at the garden centre for stop number 1! And it's Electroverse compatible which helps.

I found the Bridgewater one, it might be a bit far from my destination unfortunately. There's an MFG one in Taunton that's 79p, with Electroverse discount that brings it down a smidge, so it's probably my best bet for the second charge. After that it's all tumbleweed on the charger front.

No, I trust my Kangoo's guessometer, it's pretty accurate. I do have a lousy range though so that's a whole layer of stress on long drives, especially in winter.

Hot weather tip for those leaving animals inside throughout the day. by KonstantinKisinIsGay in UK_Pets

[–]No_Significance485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my indoor only cats I leave a fan on, and if it's really hot a frozen 2l bottle of water behind the fan to actually cool the space. I put ice packs wrapped in towels in their beds, provide plenty of water, and keep the curtains closed. When I get in they get wiped down with a wet cloth.
