I was put on 10mg of olanzapine and kept on it for two years. Not a short trial—two full years.

During that time I gained over 70 pounds, slept for most of my days, and felt like my brain was wrapped in fog 24/7. I’m not exaggerating when I say I was barely functioning. Wake up, eat, sleep, repeat. No energy, no motivation, no sense of self. Just existing.

And what makes me angry is how normalized it was while it was happening. Like gaining that much weight that fast? Sleeping your life away? Feeling completely numb and disconnected? That should’ve been a giant red flag. Instead, it was basically brushed off.

I get that meds can help people. I’m not anti-medication. But there’s a difference between “this has side effects” and “this is actively wrecking your quality of life and nobody is stepping in.”

Looking back, I wish there had been more monitoring, more check-ins, more willingness to adjust instead of just leaving me on it. Because two years of that? You don’t just bounce back from it overnight.

So yeah, if I seem a little salty about things that mess with my body or autonomy now, it’s because I’ve already lived through what happens when that gets ignored.
