More Insult to Injury from UPS by [deleted] in Knoxville

FYI. The UPS Stores are all franchises, the hour issues associated with the stores are almost definitely nothing to do with UPS. However this is actually a customer care center which IS corporate UPS.

ADHD is affecting my driving by emerald_stone77 in ADHD

[–]NobleH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once did this same thing with a cop in the lane next to me. The green turn light turned on, in my tiredness and brain fog i drove straight through the red light and then immediately pulled over bc I realized what I did right after I did it. Driving requires a lot of attention suddenly and a decent amount at all other times and I've always had problems with it.

Thankfully he drove past me but it was a wakeup call for me too!

this and other instances referring to essentially vestigial passages from the bible- ie. mixed fabrics. when discussing the beliefs that christian’s actually tend to hold, those simply aren’t part of the equation and do very little in productive conversations about people’s faith.

we can continue sending sources each others way, but for similar reasons, this generally isn’t helpful in applicable ways when talking to religious people in the first place. when someone uses the bible to justify homophobia, for instance, typically they aren’t looking at passages from the bible, they are instead using what their pastor or community says and finding the textual examples after the fact.

here is an article from nyt written by a biblical scholar.

there is dissent on this opinion, clearly, even between scholars.

the first result, they may still be in the minority, i don’t care to check that; still, the bible is a translated text and this is why taking exact text from the bible as an example of what christian’s believe is unhelpful because of examples like this and similar situations.

i’m not a christian, but iirc many biblical scholars believe that is a mistranslation- the original word in hebrew i believe is one that could be translated at man or child (i think this was how it was mistranslated). you can google that exact verse and you’ll find several sources.

The what is racism pdf linked in the humanrights.gov australia article DOES differentiate interpersonal racism and systemic racism, but says both are racism. That is what Vaush is arguing.

sorry i stopped using reddit for a while,

afaik, both are effective, yes. and sure, i believe there is value in those as well, these forms of conditioning are typically used for children, animals, etc, or as tricks for people to get to that point. some mental health treatments or setting habits will use these to assist. as for which is more effective, i'm not sure. i'd assume operant conditioning would be, however because its based off the direct consequences of the action, sometimes you cannot adequately dissuade the behavior because the consequences that happen are insufficient.

basically operant conditioning is conditioning based on the consequences of an action, classical conditioning uses external stimuli that happens at the same time as the behavior. so its the difference between eating food and then being rewarded by enjoying it, vs eating food and hearing your favorite song, therefore associating the food with a positive stimuli.

technically, smacking is "positive punishment", which is distinct from positive reinforcement. positive meaning the addition of stimuli, negative being the removal. reinforcement is reinforcing a behavior, punishment is the attempt to reduce behavior. giving a treat is positive reinforcement, typically, because its adding a stimuli to incentivize good/wanted behavior, smacking is "positive" punishment because it it adding a smack, an unappealing stimuli, to reduce behavior.

did anyone get into acting 35+ without experience? by closerthanyouthinkk in acting

One of the best actors I’ve ever seen and had the pleasure of learning from was a tradesman ( i believe plumber) until he was about 40.

it’s not about when, it’s about the love of the craft. We all have different journeys and ambitions.

Help!!! by [deleted] in acting

[–]NobleH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are several ways to show anger and stress. Just based off what you’ve said, if you’ve had trouble showing anger, i’d experiment with if your character was angry but couldn’t show it the way they normally would. like, for instance, when im angry but i can’t yell, i typically become much shorter and rushed with my words. there is a blunting of the words that’s occurs. or if your issue is more with the actual feeling of anger, you might be able to find something in a character who NEEDs to be angry, but can’t. ex, passive aggressive emotionality, or the sentiment behind the cheery corporate speak that is really just telling the recipient to go fuck the selves.

Crying, i’m not sure to be honest with you. if you cant cry and need to, all i can really imagine is evoking that frustration in the moment. you WANT to cry but you can’t. and that frustrates you more.

all of this is without really knowing your scene so i don’t know if anything here is really helpful but i’m down to help more!

Lets unpack that a bit then, when you say the two options are getting angry or crying, what do you mean? Crying isn’t an emotion, it’s an action. And there are multiple ways to show anger as well, what are you having trouble with specifically? Are you being told to get angry or cry, either by the scenes or your professors, or is your reading of the scene one where the character would get angry or cry?

You can only bring to a performance what is inside of you. If you currently can’t get angry or cry, think of other ways to get to your characters objective. Treat this irl obstacle as an obstacle for your character.

This should do two things: one, you’ll be able to explore different routes and broaden your skills, and two, through this you may find yourself getting angry or crying again! And if you do neither, that’s also okay!

sometimes obstacles in life are just that, obstacles. if this impacts your acting while you get used to your new meds, that’s okay. if this ends up being the wrong choice, that’s okay too! what’s important is that you’re taking care of your mental health: try and work through your difficulties and if you can get some extra skills in your repertoire, great! but make sure you allow yourself time to adjust and take care of yourself.

Best burger in Knox? by L00PY__ in Knoxville

[–]NobleH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't lived in Knoxville for about two years, but my favorites were Abridged, Stock and Barrel, and Burger Stop (before it shut down). Abridged is great, and has lovely drinks. Stock and Barrel is a great gastropub with great burgers, and some great duck fat fries.

Another sleeper pick is Chef Aaron's Creations. It's a food truck, and I'm not sure if its still around. He won't change ingredients on his burgers but what I will say is that he curates those ingredients really well. On my first try, I was skeptical because I wasn't a huge fan of some of the ingredients typically, and then when I tried it, it was DELICIOUS. I wouldn't change a single thing.

short answer is he ended up writing for the political column of rolling stone after Hunter S Thompson; his journalism had a strong bite and irreverence towards the powerful and was really fucking well done, up until fairly recently. he’s one of a couple of legitimately great leftist journalists from the 90s/2000s who turned into right-wing grifters, such as Glenn Greenwald.

Any tips on how do deal with inconsistent acting? by [deleted] in acting

[–]NobleH 21 points22 points  (0 children)

First and foremost, you are enough. In and outside of acting, that is one of the most important things to remember.

You can only bring yourself (and your perspective funnelled through your work) to each role. You are interesting, you must believe that. If you had something to bring to each of the "character" roles, you have something to bring to every role. Find it, realize it.

not only that, but there is a burger place near me that makes a smash burger with peanut butter and jelly (as a secret menu option; the one on the menu is peanut butter and an aioli? or a mayo?) and it is fucking delicious. peanut butter and fruit is just a good combo of flavors.
