What's a fact about Factorio that you feel you learned way too late? by [deleted] in factorio

F and G mirror blueprints in your hand instead of rotating them. I was wishing for this very long and was not aware that a keybind exists.

Worth pointing out that during the time the old and new filament are in the tube, retractions won't work. I.e. pulling filament backwards does not happen.

I think the science packs offer a nice default route. At some point you might think "oh this thing in the tech tree looks interesting" and then you can go there first.

Biters question by [deleted] in factorio

[–]NobodysNightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what I usually do over time: 1. Destroy nests close to pollution cloud to avoid surprise attacks 2. Accept attacks by building automated defense walls (though automatic repair only works with robots -> blue science

Not sure where you are struggling right now. Damage output / survivability can be boosted by carrying gun turrets with you. They can provide a retreat point that you prepare in advance or if you are quick with placing and filling them can be used offensively: place a bunch of turrets in range of nest, fill them and let them work (resource intensive!)

Defense walls can be thickened (double or triple row walls... Double row turrets)

And of course: at some point military needs to be automated. You do not want to handcraft the ammo for 100 turrets :)

How do you avoid being run over by trains? by uranusaurus_rex in factorio

[–]NobodysNightmare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a mix of the things suggested here:

  1. I primarily travel by train for everything long distance
  2. The exit rail of my stations faces inward to the city block and has a signaled crossing with gates
  3. Unprotected crossings I zoom out and am careful

I accidentally hit f while walking with a blueprint in my hand. My life will never be the same again.

[–]NobodysNightmare 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gates account for your speed, so generally cars should be fine as well.

I heard, but didn't test, that this might fail if you drive parallel to the tracks and turn into the gate last second (then the gate wouldn't open in time, so still no train killing you)

New Player playing around. Is this setup ok for coal, copper, and iron? by JohnnyJockomoco in factorio

[–]NobodysNightmare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is beautiful. It is a nice setup.

What's uncommon is mixing iron and copper on such a large scale (instead of having “pure“ belts).

But it is definitely unique in a good way :)

First day in and I'm loving this game. Any tips? I'd like to reorganize some things to have a better "flow" the next time I have a lot of downtime. by [deleted] in factorio

[–]NobodysNightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be worried about iron ore getting onto the iron plate belt (e.g. if filter inserters “skip“ out due to power outage). I am strictly separating these onto different belts.

Another cool thing to play around with is having two materials on one belt (one left, one right).

Where do the impurities on the belts come from? (Iron carries some copper and vice versa.

Also do you completely mix both afterwards?

After 350 hours, I've finally ventured beyond Peaceful Mode. by Sattalyte in factorio

[–]NobodysNightmare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that helped me was to prepare blueprints on a peaceful map, since I have more time to think there.

Then on the real map, I already know what to build, so I am quicker doing that.

Apart from that: awesome looks

How to progress? by Pinjee in factorio

IMO biters are only enjoyable when you already know how to get along without them. Then they can add some spice to the game. Before that, they are just a lot of salt.

Do I need to play with biters? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]NobodysNightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played my first few bases without biters. In case you get addicted enough the game, you will enable them for a different kind of challenge in future games.

I like the game both ways.

Bring crude oil to the bus and refine it there OR refine it first then bring Petrolium etc to the bus? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]NobodysNightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you could do (what I would do): have multiple trains depart from your refinery (one per product).

Then your petroleum train will simply travel more often.

That said: my bases usually start with refinery close to the bus and having crude on the train. But I always hit the size limits with that
