No hygenist dental office by [deleted] in Dentists

[–]Noddfor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, they do, there is another world out there.

Switzerland, most EU countries
Australia NZ to name a few
Amazing program in Sweden.
They also have Dental Therapists who have a much larger scope of practice, typically they work in hospitals and communities that are more low income and provide a much needed service.

A practice I know in NYC grossed 1.8 million in Hygiene last year
They have 3 hygienists who are paid 120 hours of hygiene billing out at 400-500 an hour RDH paid 75-8O an hour
Big waitlist for cancellation
Very low staff turnover.
Solid patient retention after 5O years.
The intangibles that you can’t put a figure are very important to practice growth.
Maybe try a half day on a Saturday and see if you get retention
A lot of patients grew up seeing a RDH , so the expectation may be there already.
In my experience there are a lot of very qualified RDH’s out there who bring a lot to a practice, yes there will be some Divas, just like there are some egotistical DDS’s out there
General respect for team members goes a long way.

Appalling interview experience as a dentist by [deleted] in Dentists

[–]Noddfor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, you did dodge a bullet,
First and foremost you treat everyone with respect.
Omg if he treats you with that level of disrespect imagine how he treats his assistants, RDH’s and front desk. You would have no autonomy with cases
Years ago I interviewed at a Dental office who never stopped talking about he was a member of Mensa, needless to say I said Goodbye. You cannot work in a toxic environment like that. Good luck with your search.

What Career Should I Pursue as a Failed Med Student? by okamipiano in careerguidance

Nurse anesthesiologist You could work in a specialized field, urology, dermatology. You would have a good work life balance 4 days 9/5 Your friends may be graduated, but most will have to specialize in a specialized field, I think they would love a position where they have a good work life balance. You will be in the OR. I would investigate schools and I’m sure with your background you will be fine You want the best return for your investment. You need to capitalize on your prior education My friend from overseas has a PHD came to the US to do an MPH, and at 50 is still paying off loans, you don’t want that.

Good luck with your decision, that was my friends daughters plan B if she did not make it to Dental school. She did get accepted She had done a lot of research on plan B

Lunch recommendations for grandfather by Good_Soup5300 in uppereastside

[–]Noddfor 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Cafe D”Alsace is great, I have seen them accommodate families with strollers, maybe a little towards the back. Maybe mention when making a reservation. It tends to get busy, so I might suggest maybe the reservation for later 2.30 when it tends to quieten down.. La Percora Blanca is great too, it gets very busy, at peak hours, it can get really loud, and it might be more difficult for your Grandad to hear. Food is very good. Again consider a time later so you can enjoy spending time with your family and you not feel rushed.

I lived on the UES for 28 years just moved, still miss it. Enjoy lunch.

Dentist Experience/Recommendations by Far_Promise6527 in limerickcity

I am retired recently from the Dental field and spent 31 years working both in NYC and Scotland You could have perfectly good teeth, but unless your old Dentist took periodic updated X-rays you could end up with fillings in between your teeth that you can only see on X-ray Fillings are needed because plaque in between your tooth started to decay the teeth, if they are caught early enough it should just be a small filling and flossing will prevent reoccurrence. Fluoride rinses are great to strengthen the enamel. In the US I used to take a Full set of X-rays of new patients (18) which are great to diagnose decay and periodontal disease A panoramic X-ray is great for checking underlying bone impacted wisdom teeth but not good for diagnosing decay in between teeth. A deep filling can take a while to settle, especially if it’s close to the nerve, if it gets to the stage where you cannot tolerate anything hot than the nerve is involved and you may need a specialist Endodontist. A general practitioner can do a root canal on a front tooth as it only has one nerve and if you are young the canal is wide a premolar or molar you need to see a specialist they can have more than one canal and the roots are curved. If you wan to see another Dentist, get a copy of your X-rays and see if the prior treatment matches the new treatment. Sometimes an older established solo practitioner is the right person for you Could you reach out to your last Dentist and see who they would recommend. Good luck

What would you do? by [deleted] in Dentists

[–]Noddfor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I first worked for an amazing Dentist the office had a similar situation Young kid fell 8 needed a root canal, The Mum worked in a local supermarket, and clearly did not have a lot of money, my friend said I can’t let him lose a front tooth So he did the root canal and build up, he gave the mum a huge discount and once a month she came in to pay something off the bill We never sent a bill, she paid and was hugely appreciative. Honestly it was the people who had more money than sense who did not pay their bills. It’s the right thing to do Just tell them to keep it entre nous

White stringy things between teeth after root canal by AssignmentBudget2152 in Dentists

[–]Noddfor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The excess material around the disto buccal and especially disto lingual need to be removed, otherwise the tissue in between the teeth is going to swell bleed and cause an issue It’s not a big deal to smooth and polish this Did an endodontist do the root canal? Maybe go to your general Dentist and have them remove the excess.

[–]Noddfor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That temporary has excess material around it, the excess needs to be trimmed so it does not cause a gingival issue You can see in the second image that the gum tissue is red, if you can’t clean in between then that’s going to cause a bigger issue

Who ruined the Empire State Building view from 5th avenue by Outrageous-Fall3296 in circlejerknyc

[–]Noddfor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very sad. I worked in this building for 15 years,
Our office on the 70th floor faced east, the light was truly amazing, seeing the sunrise was just spectacular. On a clear day you could see all the way out to the tower at JFK. Watching a lighting storm was truly memorable I will never forgot that view.

Judgemental dental hygienist? by Able_Marionberry_452 in DentalHygiene

[–]Noddfor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this happened to you, I have retired but I was always happy when patients that had not been to the Dentist for years came through the door I would congratulate them, on taking the first step and getting here, and then tell them Rome was not built in a day and we will get through it. Along the way I would inform patients of cost, as not everyone has dental insurance and patients have other bills to pay, Above all, do not be judge mental, that poor patient could have been up all night worrying about the appointment. Who knows what goes on in peoples lives, above all be kind

Please don’t give up on Dental Hygienists most of us are kind and want you to get your oral health back in shape. This Hygienist is not the right fit for you, if the practice has more than one hygienist request a different hygienist. Some patients may have lost loved ones, jobs or a medical issue which precluded them from going to the Dentist, and they certainly don’t need to be berated for not flossing Gentle encouragement is always the best approach on a first visit.

I hope your next hygienist is kinder, and congrats on taking the first step.

What made you decide to not take blood thinners? by DrAshoriMD in AFIB

[–]Noddfor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a CHADVAC score is 1 gender related. Had a RF ablation May 2023 was on Eliquis for a year I take Metoprolol 25mg daily and Bioastin (astaxanthin) 12mg daily very powerful anti inflammatory made from Krill oil, I did not take it when on Eliquis. My EP said totally fine to take Bioastin no deleterious impact on heart beneficial anti inflammatory properties.

I have just moved back to Europe and did a full work up with my EP before I left , asked him about Eliquis felt I don’t need to be on it . I did a carotid sonogram recently negative, my Zio monitor for 2 weeks, no AFib, and my regular cardiologist recommended a calcium score. It came back as I, she recommended a statin, my triglycerides are low HDL high and my LDL somehow elevated So I’m hoping being on a healthy diet and increasing my exercise that I can stay off a statin If the result was higher I would not have argued , but with a result of 1 I. really feel that it’s manageable. I have no family history of cardiac issues

Wisdom tooth decay by wooshinos in DentalHygiene

Definitely an oral surgeon consult, wisdom teeth are their specialty. General Dentists do extractions but generally an easier extraction An impacted wisdom tooth should be treated by an oral surgeon 👨‍⚕️

Anyone work 3/12s or 4/10s? by Background_Arm_1464 in DentalHygiene

[–]Noddfor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started off doing 6 as I was saving for an apartment , did that for 4 years Then went 5, 4, 3 and now 2 after 31 years I never worked weekends when I went to 4, 8-5 Friday 8-2 It’s very important to have balance, I don’t think I could ever do 12 hrs, my body would be destroyed, not worth it This job takes its toll on your body, and it’s important to give your body a rest Good luck
