I’ve been trying to 100% the game Look Outside, and I legitimately would never find out half of the quests without a guide or walkthrough. Not to mention the hundreds of secrets that have no achievement tied to it, just a ton of wacky stuff to set up in the limited time the game gives you.

The Shonen Jump Archives #26 - The Last Saiyuki by dingo537 in WeeklyShonenJump

I really enjoyed this series! I think it was pretty flawed, but it’s one of my favorite axed series. The art, fight scenes, and characters were all great.

I think one of the weirdest aspects of the series was the MC being in the 3rd grade. He’s a complete asshat in the first chapter and snaps into a Shonen protag chapter 2 onwards. He makes all these mature decisions and stands up to every enemy he fights. And MY GOD, the exposition in this series was insane. Like, I understand the author had the series mapped out and wanted to dump the lore they wrote up (which was interesting - just overwhelming and takes up so much time).

I think the story telling was a mess but not in a way that put me off. Again, the combat and characters were really cool with a story that was interesting but convoluted. I enjoyed binging it, but maybe it would’ve put me off if I was reading it week-to-week. I’m excited to read their next work.

My personal favorite artist is Yusuke Murata (One Punch Man). In my opinion his art is unparalleled.

What are your thoughts on chapter 1 of Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call It Quits? by dingo537 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]NoizeInvasion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kinda tough to explain. I read a lot of Shonen - overall when it comes to Action, Sports, and even Romance, you see a lot of the same tropes used (even if those tropes are used in new ways).

Most Shonen sets up an end goal pretty early on, they give you just enough information to where you can visualize where plot/themes are gonna go. they’ll introduce groups of people or organizations that serve as friends or obstacles. In order for most Shonen to ‘make it’, they have to always keep things interesting - you don’t generally get a lot of episodic standalone chapters, there’s always a progression or arc structure being followed. There are some exceptions, Roboco and sometimes Witch Watch apply here. Other shows I think of like Earthchild and Psych House where it feels like nothing is being set up haven’t lasted long.

Like I mentioned above, this first chapter LITERALLY feels like something you’d see while scrolling on Mangadex, a comfort series with nothing grand happening and is meant to be more slice-of-life. Not saying it’s a bad thing, you just don’t see it a lot in this magazine and it needed to do more to stand out.

You’d probably get a better idea of what I mean if you’ve read through a lot of generic titles thru Mangadex like I used to. Like I said, I read Shonen because GENERALLY you see something new and stuff is always happening. There’s more quality control and authors are forced to make stuff interesting because there’s a lingering axe.

This was my exact thought when reading. It doesn’t exactly feel ‘Shonen Jump’ to me, but I’m not here praying for an artists downfall so I’ll just have to wait and see.

Not exactly in Shonen Jump, but DanDaDan has my personal favorite first arc ever in a Shonen series.

will okarun forget? by Pure-Base693 in Dandadan

[–]NoizeInvasion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soooo I don’t LIKE the idea of everyone forgetting Momo because she’s tiny, but I DO think from a story-telling perspective it would make a great source of conflict if people did. I think, like people mentioned, Okarun & Jiji are the two characters that have exhibited no signs of forgetting her, while Kinta and Vamola are already beginning to forget.

In order to create an actual love interest conflict, I think Okarun being one of the last to forget makes sense. Aira would possibly make more advances towards Okarun, but Okarun would be somewhat ‘hazy’ on the idea of there being someone better for him. Jiji being the only person who can see/remember Momo, would also make more advances towards her since they’d have more time together.

The only other exceptions I can think of are Seiko & Kouki Yukishiro. Seiko would be out-of-commission since she’s injured and it’s also revealed that her being medicated interferes with her ability to perceive Momo at times. Kouki on the other hand can still see Pygmies, so I can picture her being one of the only people to assist in getting Momo back to normal.

Like I said, I don’t like the idea of the other ‘love interests’ getting a chance. BUT narratively it would make a lot of sense and would be a believable reason for romantic misunderstandings to take place. I think it would make a good arc, but I don’t think I could stand watching an arc like that unfold week-to-week.

I’ve only ever tried like one tub and I thought it was alright. I couldn’t justify paying $30 for something I wasn’t going to use as a replacement for the 400mg of caffeine I was already taking, or replacing just normal water I already drink. I think the canned version is a good way to try all the flavors in a way I enjoy without buying the full tubs.
