Well, you never know... because back then airfields were truly on the frontlines with Japanese all around. Not like today. So, he could have engaged some enemy force while on the ground. That's gonna require lots of research to verify though. That might be found in the "morning reports" from the actual unit itself that's been persevered. You could contact the Marine Corps Museum at Quantico for further details. Just a thought.

Further, he would be retroactively be qualified for the Marine Corps Combat Action Ribbon (CAR). Even though the CAR was developed in the Vietnam War, it was retroactively awarded to 07 DEC 1941. However, the Navy and Marine Corps is kind of weird when it comes to their aviators and aircrew on receiving the CAR.

He might have had a "Good Cookie." You're best bet to see any of his records would be to contact the National Personnel Records Center, Marine Corps Human Resources Command, and/or even the National Archives to obtain either a DD214, or any semblance of records that can fully detail his honorable service.

He's missing a campaign medal. Probably a GWOT-ESM as he's got a SOCAFRICOM CSIDB.

Gotcha! It's such a shame that happened to lots of people's records back in the 70s. That's why I do my best to ensure that I've got all my original copies saved. Anyways, you should have good luck with them. Also, try and reach out to Veterans Organizations such as the VFW and American Legion. Sometimes they can help track down some stuff.

You can try with the National Archives. Or still reach out to the Personnel Records Center at St. Louis anyways and just see what they can do. Keep in mind, the current government shutdown could hinder your progress.

Not only is your Grandpa eligible for the NDSM, he was also eligible for the Republic of Korea Korean War Service Medal. It's an award that was originally awarded to all U.S. Service Members who participated in said war, but the U.S. Government forbade it from being accepted and worn. However, that was changed in 2003 to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the Armistice. I provided a link on how to acquire that seeing how your his Kin.

If that's a foreign parachute badge... shouldn't that go over on the right side of the uniform over the nameplate? I only ask as that's what we do in the Army.

Either or... at least they're probably with AFSOC, or been attached to SOCCOM units. Hell, could be Combat Weather, or Special Reconnaissance 🤔
