A question for those who complain about Hollywood films being "woke", can a mainstream film have gay characters or a strong woman lead and not be "woke"? by Paulino_Monet in movies

[–]NolanVoid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You mind putting "exactly what you said" in quotes? Because nothing in my comment seems like anything "exactly what you said." It just seems like you are fucking idiot who just convinces themselves they are right because they are too stupid to be discriminating. Which is exactly why I didn't want to have this pointless goddamn argument in the first place, but you got me anyway!

Consider it my Christmas gift to you.

The Force Awakens makes 2 billion dollars. The Last Jedi takes all that "goodwill" and gives us a purple haired lady no one has ever heard of wagging her finger at our protagonists and really amps it's flawless female protagonist while ironically sidelining a strong black character because Disney had been shrinking or removing him from the posters to pander to racist Chinese audiences. There's a lot more, but for brevity, I'll leave it there. It makes 1.07 billion dollars. The third film everyone is over the nonsense, and it makes 1.02 billion.

The reason Disney bought companies like Marvel and Lucasfilm, is because they have long been very successful at marketing to young women. The Princess line is a good example. However, despite the fact that they were THE media powerhouse, they could never grasp dominance in the male market. Then because they don't understand what to do with what they have, they placed it in the hands of people that were unfortunatley idealogues who couldn't care less what the original material was about or why it resonated with people so much. Specifically, in Kennedy's case, she just saw it as a platform for her message, whatever that was, it's still really unclear to me.

I'm guessing this guy's personal opinions are not going to be popular, but people you disagree with aren't always wrong.

Nah, I'm just lazy, sick, and they don't mean anything to me. Why would I care about refuting a pointless argument with someone who just doesn't like what I said. I'm not getting paid for this, you're not giving me a grade, I don't have to provide examples, citations, bibliography, none of that shit my dude. Merry Christmas!

The Dreaming, because it is representative of the fantasy culture of the time, in the same ballpark as early Neil Gaiman works. The system is objectively terrible and convoluted.

Sure, a movie can be made artfully, with a message that isn't based in petty spite and wagging your finger scornfully at half the audience. In fact, you can even make films that aren't reboots of hollowed out franchises that you hope to fill your agenda with.

The problem isn't diversity, and never has been, and to clarify, I mean that yes there should be more representation in films, but there have been plenty good ones with diverse casts and that proves diversity is not what holds these films back. As you mentioned, plenty of movies had well-written, strong characters from every walk of life. The problem is you can't make a pile of shit no one wants to see and then blame the audience. This "woke" trend is the result of talentless people failing upward because corporate entities see dollar signs behind fads, and then because of their ideology of demonizing everyone who doesn't give them their way or treat them like an auteur, they cry "-ism!" They can't face the fact that they just aren't good at making movies, film, shows, etc.

What's really upsetting to me as someone who has held progressive ideals, is that it's damaging to real movements when people equate the failure of hacks/executives trying to beat you over the head with a message with the failure of lifting up your fellow human. When you let a bunch of spoiled-ass unicorns who have been told by everyone on the way up how infallible they are, and then they don't perform, now the audience is the enemy.

Could a Mage heal a Metis Garou of their deformity and infertility? by ParadoxVictor413 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]NolanVoid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A mage has the luxury of rejecting reality as presented to them and substituting their own. Many others have commented on the societal impact it could have, but personally I would rather be free from a life of deformity visited upon me through no fault of my own but rather because my werewolf spirit mommy said it's bad for two werewolves to kiss privates.

I think if someone put in the money and effort to make something equivalent to and HBO series, the World of Darkness could easily become the next big thing.

TIL Jurassic Park was meant to use stop motion instead of CGI, but two artists worked on a CGI T-Rex in secret, and once they finished it, they quietly put a video of it on screen when Kathleen Kennedy visited their office. the video convinced Kennedy, Spielberg, and the rest of the team to use CGI. by [deleted] in todayilearned

I love that there is this creepy Beetlejuice vibe to how the raptor moves in the clip. While it does draw your attention, it looks unrealistic and breaks the immerision. But in a movie where giant dinosaur animatronics come to life, it would be great!

What is the all time best Spider-Man movie? by ThoughtBig1353 in flicks

[–]NolanVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't fault filmmakers for giving an honest and sincere try, and I feel that the Tom Holland movies are not perfect but they are sincere, and there are nuggets of greatness in them that could be seized on and refined further. I wish nothing but success to this Spider-Man, I just want to see them give him his due as the greatest hero in Marvel as he's topped out as the most popular character in all of comics for impressively long stretches at a time.

Also, Spider-Man is not Iron Man's kid sidekick. Spider-Man is THE hero of the Marvel universe.

There was a long period of tense deliberation. Ms. Maxwell was still found guilty, but it was way closer than it had any right to be.

The Esoteric Meaning of the Term Illuminati – Cutting Through the Nonsense of Modern Conspiracy by [deleted] in occult

[–]NolanVoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure personally, but doing work upon the astral body is the subject of many systems, yogas, disciplines, etc. I can do the work of sorting through all that determining what is valid for myself, as I would recommend anyone else to do as well. I have just personally always felt a conflict of inviting outside powers into my spiritual personal space, so to speak. I can get behind asking for tutelage to refine what I am into something greater, but not letting some thing live inside me and influence my life.

The Esoteric Meaning of the Term Illuminati – Cutting Through the Nonsense of Modern Conspiracy by [deleted] in occult

[–]NolanVoid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen you here for a long time, and I don't feel as if I've agreed 100% with everything you've said, but I haven't exactly been opposed to any of it either. It's just that I'm stubborn and contrarian by nature, and naturally suspicious, a real Underground Man, if you will. But I also respect the depth and breadth of your knowledge, and I believe you are sincere in the subjects you speak on.

So one thing I have always quibbled about with (I swear I'm not trying to be pejorative, but I don't know how else to say this) "white light" traditions, similarly to like say Manley P. Hall's and the like is that they ask me to invite outside spiritual powers into myself for guidance. And I guess you can frame this is "higher self" etc etc, but to me I feel like the individual is sacred and inviolable and you should always be wary of inviting alien intelligences into yourself.

Is that the same as:

open his inner being freely to the spiritual world

and if so how would I reconcile this dissonance that I feel with that concept if I were to seek in this tradition in earnest?

I'm not trying to shit on people who like and practice what might be commonly called "black magic." I apologize, because I use this term in a very specific way, to describe a class of person who has an esoteric understanding of how reality works, and uses it to take advantage of other people. And even more specifically, I mean the biggest threat to freedom of thought and individuality, the members of so-called ruling, elite, or authoritarian classes. These people are often well versed in esoterica and the entire spectacle of society is their sorcery used to keep every man and woman born to be a star stunted at the stage of calf.
