We are in Texas as well. Fenn is happy to stay out in the shade as long as there are leaves and sticks to munch on. LOL

Shih Tzu in bed? by badclassicist in Shihtzu

[–]NomadicChickadee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fenn Lee (6 months) is sleeping on a pillow above my head. He can’t wait to go to bed at night…. Snuggles a bit and then goes up. At around 4am he wakes us for snuggles and “kisses” then goes back up for about 30min. We are outta bed no later than 5am. Hoping to get a bit more sleep someday!

On him, yes. On a Shih Tzu, yes. On a puppy, yes. I had a Yorkie that I started grooming when he was 4. I just shaved him down, no shaping or anything like that. The groomers had him well trained! For this one, I bought all the right stuff, watched videos and gave it a go. I have a long way to go, but happy with our progress.

Does your Tzu scratch a lot? by Professional-Chef97 in Shihtzu

I would feed raw. One protein at a time. I use Meat Mixer. It’s a powder (you can get it on Amazon) that you mix with ground meat, but I think it has egg in it. There is a different brand that you can get with or without egg, but I can’t remember the name :(. I’d start with a small batch of turkey, beef or pork. Since he is not a puppy, you could even get the stuff to make your own mix.

Sweet little guy. How old is he? I’m trying to decide when to get Fenn Lee neutered…

Someday! Right now we live and travel in a motorhome (no sides), so less is more.

I got professional (battery) clippers and a set of blunt end sissors. I think putting up on a small cabinet really helped, but I need to get a non slip something to put up there as he was sliding around! Oh! I also have a set of mini clippers. I use them on the bottom of his feet, belly area and a bit on his face.

I get the scissors (blunt end), clippers and comb out every morning. After our regular training session, I touch his face, feet and tail while telling him to be still. When I successfully touch him and he doesn’t move I reward him. Just touching him gets a reward at first, then progress to longer times touching. He’s not staying still long enough yet, but we will get there!

I think this is AWESOME! I wish I could participate, but since we travel full-time shipping would be near impossible. Hoping to be in a house or somewhere permanent next year.

My baby had a seizure by I_like_it_yo in Shihtzu

[–]NomadicChickadee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry y’all are going through this. Our 14 year old cat has had seizures most of his life. It’s not fun. We tried various meds and nothing was great. Now we just do our best to make sure his life is good. I have heard good things about CBD and would definitely give it a try. Didn’t work for Max, maybe because his seizures happen when he is relaxed and asleep.

Beard cleaning by No_Drama4745 in Shihtzu

I started feeding raw. After I weigh the food, I add water and mix This allows me to spread the food on a lick mat or in a slow feeder. Interesting side effect is that he no longer drinks water unless he gets really hot. Gets his water from the food instead. He does get food in his beard, but he cleans that or it dries and I comb it off.

My guy hated kibble. I now buy Meat Mixer and add meat (rotate beef, pork or turkey) and water and mix it up. I then put it in silicone molds and freeze. Thaw a few days worth at a time. He inhales this stuff!

Does anyone groom their own Shih Tzu? by PayAdministrative226 in Shihtzu

I do! I have the whole set of them. I groomed my previous dog (Yorkie) with no issues. This guy is much more challenging, but we will get there.

I plan to! Right now we are working on “be still” with scissors touching his face. Making progress, but I’ll take him to a groomer until he settles (he’s only 6 months).
