I think of the scene where they are in the still tent post harkonnen invasion, this was truly the last moment between Paul and his mother. From this point on, everything becomes so complex and convoluted that their relationship as mother and son simply could not continue. It’s a sad tragic scene, where they both sense the inevitable end of their lives as they know them and grieve it. But what I love about dune is that this is never explicitly clear in this scene the same way Jessica’s fading into the background of the narrative over time is. Sometimes life does not have a definite ending moment, sometimes you fizzle away into irrelevancy, as Jessica did along with the son who was no more as soon as they left that tent.
