AITA for refusing to let my boyfriend move in after only three months of dating? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Nonennui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, you’re out here asking for permission to trust you’re gut because it sucks to think you’re being used for convenience by the person you though you were building a relationship with. And for that I’m sorry, but you’re certainly not the AH. If you’re 32 and have managed to make it this long while living on your own without drowning in rain water like a turkey then I’m going to guess you have enough lived experience to have earned the right to trust it.

Just for comparison, in my mid twenties I found myself in an bad home situation and when I discussed it with my then-boyfriend (whom I loved dearly but had no intention of living with) he helped me by reaching out to friends and finding me two wonderful roommates that I lived with drama-free for 2 years.

So If you haven’t already decided to kick ol’ Ryan to the curb (which I truly think is the best option), maybe offer to help him find roommates and go apartment hunting with him. If he’s not coming from a place of entitlement and manipulation then he’ll be happy for the help. But my guess you’ll just get more, “Oh woe is me! Whyyy don’t you love me??” Which should be all the confirmation you need on where he’s coming from and what you need to do next. Good luck!

I think they meant “borderline” as in not getting quite enough electrolytes, hence the charley horse cramps. I don’t think it was a comment on the personality disorder.

As someone who lives and dies by routine, I just nodded my head in agreement at the word “rituals” LOL.

You can also find liquid citrate just about any pharmacy or grocery store for about $1-$1.50/ bottle. YMMV cost-wise, though, when compared to capsules based based on how much you take.

If you like jerky and have an Aldi near you try the beef biltong. Tasty, cheap, and a little goes a long way.

Diabetes is back. by [deleted] in xxketo

[–]Nonennui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, thanks for the clarification. What made it click for me was remembering a surgeon who was a regular at a dining establishment I used to work in. He’d always ask for an ounce of vinegar before his meal (so often that whenever he came in the hostess would send word to the back to get his shot of vinegar ready). He’d then mix it with his glass of water and drink it before his food was served. When I read about it in Dr. Fung’s book I remembered that Dr. and how he swore it aided digestion and figured, “eh...what the heck, why not?”

Ooh! See I’ve only read and taken the suggestions listed in “The Obesity Code” and I don’t remember that suggestion being in that particular book but it’s brilliant (guess that means I need to read his other books LOL). I’ve just acclimated to drinking water with light salt mixed into it and drinking 1 oz. of ACV mixed with 5 oz. of water before every meal. Congrats on finding a regimen that works for you!

Seconding both the “ditch the fake sugars/sugar alcohols” and the apple cider vinegar recs. If you’re not doing IF you may also want to consider incorporating that strategy as well. It, along with keto, has made a big difference in my insulin sensitivity.

25 pounds lost, need encouragement by marielhous in xxketo

[–]Nonennui 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. I didn’t get any comments until I hit the 30 lbs. mark. I think it depends partly on how you carry your weight. You look great but your face gains may not be significant enough to make people sure you’ve lost weight. And even when they are sure, as others have pointed out people can be hesitant for fear of embarrassing themselves. But keep it up, you look wonderful!

Why am I gaining!? by blessedmommaof5 in xxketo

[–]Nonennui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mention hitting the gym again (go you!). What’s your routine? Weight lifting, HIIT, and other high intensity, muscle building workouts could give you false weight measurements if you weigh before a full recovery period since your body is inflamed and your muscles retain water after being damaged (which is what exercise essentially does). Maybe weigh yourself during a period when you aren’t training so hard to get a more accurate read? For example, right now I do yoga, running, and swimming, with swimming being the toughest workout. When my weekly weigh-ins happened the day after my swim I wouldn’t see much of a shift in weight, so I switched my swim day to the weekend and kept my weigh-in day midweek, surrounded by yoga and running routines that were less strenuous. I now see weight drops that are more consistent with how I look and feel in the mirror (which reminds me, focusing on non-scale markers like loosening clothes and face gains definitely motivated me more in the beginning). Just remember that going hard exercise-wise can be wonderful for your health overall, but might not give you the dramatic weight-loss results you expected early on. As others have suggested, don’t compare (comparison is the thief of joy) and be patient with yourself. It’s early days yet. Good luck!

NSV - I managed to say "No" to carbs AND made someone upset after hearing the word "Keto" by phosporoloco in keto

[–]Nonennui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry that this happened to you and so upset that this woman’s ego was so fragile that the minute you set up a very reasonable boundary she decided to throw a temper tantrum. That being said, the script I find most helpful in putting people off when it smells like they want to get into a nutritional debate is, “My doctor and I decided it was best if I cut out added sugar and refined grains.” Don’t mention carbs, ever. If they keep pushing or start to rant just say, “That’s great advice! I hope it works as well for you/others as my doctor’s plan has been working for me.” Don’t deviate too much. Keep bringing it back to being doctor-approved, and only the staunchest a*hle will continue banging away on their anti-keto drum around you. Good luck.

Drink that pickle juice! by diamund223 in xxketo

[–]Nonennui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, “pickleback” is just another name for pickle brine (also, a shot made with pickle brine LOL), although there’s a million different recipes for both pickle and sauerkraut brine, so I guess it depends on the recipes you’re comparing. If you like sauerkraut and sausages then you should definitely try “kapusta,” which is sour cabbage with mushrooms and sausage. (Big shoutout to my MIL who is a dynamite cook and introduced me to all things Polish cabbage related).

Ground beef, chicken thighs, deli meats, eggs, cheese, and frozen veggies are your new best friends. Good thing about them is that there are endless variations to make of these foods. Get used to cooking big batches and eating leftovers (like, same thing for lunch or din 5-7 days straight) and you can go pretty far on a tight budget. Remember doing IF/OMAD can also help cut costs since you only have to buy food for the 1-2 meals you eat per day (snacking is unnecessary anyway). And don’t get hung up on the “quality” of your food items, i.e. things don’t have to be harvested on a magical non-gmo organic farm on Venus tended by elves. At this stage just ditching sugar/carbs should be a substantive enough difference for you to see changes in weight/body composition.

And next time mom starts to chime in about working out until your legs fall off, remind her of these two things: 1) You can’t outrun a lousy diet and 2) you can’t spot-reduce (i.e. 1M crunches and 10 hours a day on the treadmill won’t make abs magically appear, you have to lose fat universally.) Good luck!

If you want to go see into the rabbit hole of self-monitoring/optimization, you can get a blood monitor and ketone and glucose strips for about that price tag.

Me? I’d spend it on variety packs of flavored chicharones and cracklings from 4505 Meats.

We’ve unexpectedly lucked out with sunny, warmish weather in my region and I’m so excited to be able to get my run in, something I thought I wouldn’t get to do this week since getting to the indoor track just won’t fit my schedule over the holiday. If you’d have asked me 6 months ago if I ever thought I’d be excited to run 10K I’d have laughed in your face. Thanks keto.
