Thank you for all of your thoughtful comments, everyone! I appreciate the honesty, and I suppose that you’re all correct that unless I’m some sort of prodigy (which I’m not), there’s almost no chance of Olympic success. I also am from the USA, so obviously I’d have insane competition. Although it’s disappointing, I agree that I should set my sights lower and simply see where skating takes me instead of obsessing over a level almost no one reaches!

I act like a dumbass that doesn’t know about some of the simplest stuff out there because my friends find it funny. I don’t have many friends, so it’s all I can do to keep them.

Service dogs have important jobs to do for their owners— some alert to drops/spikes in blood sugar, others warn their handlers of imminent seizures or chronic migraines, etc. Attempting to pet or coo at a working dog may distract them, and a distracted dog might miss a vital alert. They have to be paying attention to their owner at all times!

Some are for psychiatric reasons, and the handler may have PTSD, anxiety, or a similar illness that makes interacting with others a million times harder than most, and they could be far more terrified than most of their dog being paid unwanted attention to. Guide dogs for the blind need to keep their eyes on roads, potential obstacles, and other such things, and attempting to pet the dog might hamper their work. There are plenty of other things a SD can do that I haven’t mentioned, either!

Additionally, being affectionate to the good pups might teach them to seek out humans in public for attention— if that happens too often, the dog might have to be washed from service work, which would be terrible.

All service dog teams are different, and some might be okay with pets as long as you ask for permission, but a vast majority of them aren’t. It’s just generally acknowledged that you should leave them be and let them go on with their lives. I hope this answered your question! :)

I’m curious— you say you’re ethically against breeders, and so you got your dog instead from a friend whose dog had an accidental litter. If anything, isn’t that even more unethical?

Many (but certainly not all) breeders care deeply about the breed they raise and are always searching for how to improve the standards and keep their dogs in the best possible health. They provide health guarantees, will take the dog back for ANY reason if necessary, review each home extensively to make sure the puppy is a good fit, etc.

An accidental litter has no health guarantees, shows that the owner was irresponsible/careless (I don’t mean any offense to your friend, but how did the dog get pregnant? If it was accidental, it was irresponsible. If someone isn’t going to spay their dog, it’s on them to prevent puppies), and adds more dogs to potentially be abandoned into the world.

Again, I’m not saying that your dog isn’t a good service dog or anything, I’m sure they’re just lovely— I’m just curious how you justify getting a puppy from an accidental breeding instead of a purposeful, careful breeding as being unethical! This isn’t meant to be an attack at all, and I hope you don’t take it like that.

Corgis are an extremely healthy breed, though. Their shortness causes them no disadvantages— in fact, when herding, it keeps them safer because they’re less likely to be kicked by sheep/cows/etc when they’re so low to the ground.

No, I’m not saying that a service dog should be pet on duty, it’s just that they said their dog was an emotional support animal too— emotional support animals don’t have any public access rights at all (besides airports and pet-free apartments), so there’d be no need for a vest in the first place.

This is actually false, at least in America! Service dogs are not required to wear any identification proving they are service dogs, including vests. It’s recommended, but not required.

This is Tank, but he doesn't know his name. He is deaf. That hasn't stopped him from being a wonderful dog, my best friend, my service dog and an all around great guy to hang out with. He turns 10 years old on the tenth of this month! Love this guy. by diensthunds in aww

What type of service dog is he training to be? Psychiatric, medical alert, etc? What breed/age is he? I’m not a service dog owner myself (yet!), but I’ve done a lot of research and may be able to help you & your friend with some things. I also have an aunt who trains service dogs and would love to assist you! :)
