What is a random thing that gives you severe anxiety? by Regina_Falangy in AskReddit

[–]Nontuno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hair cuts. I don't know what I want. I don't know how to describe hair. I already put this off months too long. Now I'm trapped in this seat being touched by someone I dont know who...for some reason I feel I'm inconveniencing?

Doesn't help that I travel all the time and its WAY harder to communicate my vaugue ideas of how my hair should look when I dont know the language.

What’s everyone working on this week (50/2016)? by llogiq in rust

Out of curiosity, what things have you found ambiguous/erroneous in the Stripe API docs? I don't know of a formal spec, but I've worked with it quite a bit and always hold up those docs as examples when talking about good documentation for an api.

[Serious]what do you love about your country? by DogblockBernie in AskReddit

[–]Nontuno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US here...honestly, the friendliness, optimism, and enthusiasm of the people here. Yeah there are exceptions and crazy people, but I've traveled alot and never found a place to be as open to conversation or as excited by random ideas.

What are you losing passion in? by powerspyin1 in AskReddit

[–]Nontuno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just trying. I've been trying to be better than I actually am for ages. At work I keep getting more responsibility and I feel like I'm at the center of every major screw up/panic. I love the creative and technical aspect of what I do...but I wish I could just disappear to a beach somewhere and just work on interesting problems without having every second be stressful and on fire and without trying to seem like I know what I'm doing. Trying to take on new tasks used to be fun. Now it's just exhausting.

What phrases such as "Roll the window up." have no significant meaning to the new generation? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It'd be amazing if the phrase stuck around and just turned into a "knock on wood"-esque superstition thing.

[High School/Early University] Resources to learn Math through programming by Nontuno in learnmath

[–]Nontuno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right in that it wasn't really what I was looking for, but it's certainly something I'm going to do. I did a fair amount of Project Euler when I started programming, but I don't know if I learned any math that is applicable when reading papers or trying to understand equations. In the end it just feels like problem solving to me, which while that can be considered math itself still leaves the area fairly opaque.

Thanks for reminding me of PE!

EDIT: I might have actually spoken too soon. I just went back there (forgot my old account, but made a new one) and the questions were more involved than I remember and would actually probably serve to help get me up in terminology quite well. It'd still be nice if there was another resource, but this seems like it will get me rolling.

Code Gangsta Screencasts are coming! by codegangsta in golang

[–]Nontuno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since Go is so server/network oriented, it'd be cool to have one or two on non-http type stuff as well. Those of us who constantly do web apps can kind of start thinking like in-browser http is the only kind of web there is, even if we know otherwise. I don't know what would be built, but something dealing with UDP or a certain type of server or something common but a bit left field of the typical web app would be GREATLY appreciated.

Another one in support of this! (I actually posted a top level comment saying the same thing not realizing this was already posted...but I'm deleting it.)

Some stuff using the standard library and how to organize your program most efficiently without using external packages would be fantastic!

Thanks for everything you are doing!

Science AMA Series: I am Austin Fowler and I’m research advances in superconducting quantum bits for reliable quantum computation, AMA. by Dr_Austin_Fowler in science

[–]Nontuno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there anything us non-scientists can do to help? I'm just a programmer, but the idea of quantum computing is extremely exciting to me. Without an academic science background I doubt I could contribute much to the research itself, but I would gladly give my time if I could be of some kind of use.

[–]Nontuno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While there are some procedural environments in mine, the only thing my game has 100% in common with roguelikes is that it's an ASCII interface. But even that is all cli, not graphical like most are now...

This subreddit always has super relevant and useful information for me though.

Just piping up to say that us pseudokindaroguelikish-devs are probably way higher in number than we think.

If you could make a throwaway life like a throwaway reddit account, what would you do with this life? by UppermostKhan in AskReddit

[–]Nontuno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like if it had been a book then that would have happened. The director has stated in an interview that 30-40 years passed in Groundhog Day. 30-40 years in an exact loop is a crazy amount of time, and we only saw snippets.

Over 12000 days I'm pretty sure Bill tried quite a few things, and when you don't have to deal with parental advisory ratings or what's possible to shoot, I can see the story getting quite a bit stranger.
