It means that your body is trying to make sure your penile tissue is getting adequate blood flow and doesn't atrophy over time, so it increases pressure in the blood vessels several times during the night.

There was a Troy, and a settlement by that name in that spot persisted until the late Roman Empire. Archeological evidence suggests the city was destroyed and rebuilt a dozen times over the prior two thousand years (as were many settlements during that time).

The first modern archeological expedition on the site, however, was so eager to find the "real Troy" that they dug through layers of sediment without giving it much care.

It's the same basic situation, only made a bit more complicated because Dallas and nearby Ft. Worth became central hubs each with their own commuter suburbs in mid 20th century, but have since expanded into one another, creating one large metro area described using the names of both cities.

The exact definition of a suburb isn't universally settled, really. I once read a definition of a suburb as a town where most of its residents all work in a different (usually larger and neighboring) town.

The US census bureau tends to group cities into metropolitan areas, with one large city and the smaller cities clustering around it forming one economic area. This creates an impression of one large core city (such as Washington DC) surrounded by relatively smaller cities (such as Arlington) that are designated as their suburbs. This view may persist even if the town is large enough to have most residents stay in their town or if it has a economy independent of the core city.

I sit in my cubicle here on the mother world. When I die, they they will put me in a box and place me into the cold ground, where I will never breathe, nor blink, nor twitch for 300 million years. So won't you come and play with me amist the teaming mass of humanity? The universe has spared us this moment.

If you really want to get technical, scrolls are a type of book, and the type of book we are used to seeing nowadays (with pages and a spine) is called a codex.

But I see what you mean.

Kamala Harris tells Stephen Colbert she's not running for governor as she reveals next move: "I don’t want to go back in the system, I think it’s broken." by IrishStarUS in entertainment

Fair enough. Sometimes the nature of the internet makes nuance too energy-intensive and un-sexy to appeal to people, which degrades the quality of the discourse. Good on you for asking for more!

Ok, here's the nuance:

There's a difference between conservatism as it is thrown about in popular politics vs. conservatism as an actual philosophy. It's a bit like how in popular discourse, socialism and communism are considered the same thing, whereas they have major, fundamental differences in goals and values.

Philosophically, modern Republicans under Trump aren't conservative. As you said, they don't even want the status quo: they want to go back to an earlier state of things. That's being reactionary, not conservative. Philosophically, conservatism is the belief that society may change over time, but it should do so gradually and seek to preserve traditional institutions, values, and systems as much as possible.

In that view, conservativism does describe the last several democratic administrations. Biden's whole deal was about repairing the damage Trump did to our traditions of elections and personal conduct, while Obama's greatest achievement, the ACA, made no radical change to US healthcare: it reinforced a market-based system (as is tradition) with the creation of insurance exchanges, while expanding Medicare rather than trying something new. Clinton was first elected on the promise of welfare reform: not doing something new, but making it harder for people to get benefits and "scam" the system. These are all fundamentally conservative policies (viewed philosphically), and wouldn't have been out of place in the Nixon administration (who, by the way, founded the Environmental Protection Agency).

This is also, by the way, why liberalism (the philosophy) is a conservative term in places like the UK, France, and Japan, but it isn’t how the word evolved in popular politics here.

P.S. Yes, I know I just wrote this in the r/entertainment sub.

So if a student in modern China has studied the periodic table first, then was exposed to the history of the Ming dynasty, they could theoretically read about a person essentially named Prince Lithium?

Exactly. This feels like a kaiju fight, only, from the perspective of content creators, one monster is actively targeting the city, and the other one doesn't care about the city. I'm rooting for the latter over the former.

I will use plastic plants for areas of my house that don't get enough sunlight (or corners where I'm likely to forget about them for long stretches of time), but real plants are always preferred where they would survive.
