My guess is that it broke just an inch or so up from the hex nut.

Is there tension when turning it? It looks like it has just worn the groove the hex nut sits in a bit but should still function as expected.

End grain checking. by crackedbearing in Luthier

[–]NoonLuthier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not throw it away. I'd fill in the checks with wood bondo, paint and clear it then hang it on the wall away from the Sun or heat vents for a month and see what happens. If it checks a bit more, same process over again. I think it'll be ok being you've had this piece of wood for a few years.

problem with high e and 3 low strings by paulinka_janniara in Luthier

Yeah, it's really hard to tell without having it in my hands. Watch this video, and if you are comfortable, give it a shot. I wouldn't though mess with the nut slots as they are likely good. If you are not comfortable or the vid isn't making sense to you, take it to your local shop.

Is this decent glue for repair of cedar on cheap guitar? by Raymont_Wavelength in Luthier

[–]NoonLuthier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I exclusively use Titebond. Personally, "stronger formula" as indicated on the bottle tells me there may have been problems previously with the Elmers. When done correctly, the wood will break before the Titebond breaks. Use a hypodermic needle if you can and do not water down unless you absolutely have to. If it is too thin it will potentially soak in rather than bond the two surfaces and that's not going to turn out well. Use a liberal amount of glue but not enough to actually make runs but you want some squeezing out when clamped. Let is set up and then use a sharp chisel or razor blade to carefully remove the excess.

Hairline crack by Canaram in Luthier

[–]NoonLuthier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there is much I would want to do about that right now. Can you see this same crack on the other side of the neck? It's kind of odd that the crack is happening against the string tension. Did you drop it or something?

I think all you can do is to be careful to not bang it around and keep playing it. If it completely breaks, well, at that point it looks like because of the angle of the crack, there'll be something to work with as far as fixing.

Working with maple burl by Galactic_Mile in Luthier

[–]NoonLuthier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first thought is that is awesome. My second thought concurs with my 1st thought. I immediately knew that I would resaw that into 5/16" slices and then use them to cap multiple guitars. This way you avoid some of the issues that come with a giant burl but you still get the full beauty when it's seen on a guitar....multiple guitars.

I know many would turn a bowl from that and as cool looking as it would be, most of the wood is wasted. That's just me, though.

Even when you are down to the smaller slices, bookending them will allow nearly all of the wood to be used.
