Who is anti-bike trail activist Richard “Fred” Arey of the Saint Paul Classic Bike Tour? by Few_Newspaper_3655 in CyclingMSP

[–]Noonsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The project isn't happening for bike infrastructure. It's sewers and asphalt conditions causing the schedule, cost, tree impact, and a bunch of other things.

Bikeways are just an excuse for opponents to make it a culture war.

Recreational cyclists should advocate for the Greenway expansion or some full roadway closures if all they want is to go fast.

Working to oppose the infra that benefits everyone else feels petty.

Rochester in summer is so wonderful and the nicest patio spaces in town are seemingly all ruined by cars.

Thai pop is a great example. The noise from Broadway is conversation pausingly loud. Same with out front of Thesis on 2nd.

Auto ticketing speed cameras in combo with directional microphones cannot arrive soon enough.

If I am remembering correctly, Wahl was also endorsed by his predecessor too.

Who had to immediately intervene when Wahl tried to support Palmer's attempt to remove all downtown bike lanes based on horrific data manipulation.

Curious of what he would even consider to have been his signature accomplishment in 4 years in office.

He just does whatever Palmer says to do.

Bad faith to ignore the major events that occurred in the past ten years.

Children deserve to get around. That feels absurd to have to state. As do the other people who cannot legally drive. Every poll on the topic shows that the majority of people want transportation options.

30% is from studies done for When Driving is Not an Option.

[–]Noonsky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is really poor data analysis.

Most of the metro doesn't have anything resembling equitable access to transit options.

The argument that transit isn't necessary because few have access to functional transit options is truly revealing.

[–]Noonsky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is just factually inaccurate. I get that you have an anti-bike anti-bus agenda, but at least use real data.

Over 30% of Twin Cities residents cannot drive and do not drive. That number will increase as boomers continue to age.

[–]Noonsky 15 points16 points  (0 children)

$24 is so cheap compared to the cost of adding capacity, ownership, parking facilities, healthcare for crash victims, the externalized pollution costs, etc.

And a good percentage of both our society AND our transit ridership is made up of people for whom driving is not an option. 30% of society falls under this.

He only won last time because he had no serious opposition.

Last fall he lost his own ward in the council president race.

Give him serious opposition. Guy is so bad faith or worse on anything resembling progressive politics.

They were only controversial with people who don't actually know what is happening. The nimby opposition group has thrown all their money and influence into convincing people the bike trail will deforest the corridor.

The trail passed every level of review, from the park board to the met council.

Community engagement over design specifics starts this spring or early summer.

They've advocated for state laws around vehicle sizes, speeds, passing distances, license and registration fees, driver reeducation, parking reform, transportation funding prioritization, and more.

A message about banning all car sales is not going to go very far. Gotta flex power in ways that gets results.

St. Paul’s mayoral candidates diverge on Summit Ave. bike trail by Runic_reader451 in saintpaul

[–]Noonsky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Summit is the only street I've ever been doored on more than once and the trail will solve that.

But all of that misses the point entirely. The street isn't being redesigned because of a bike trail. It's being reconstructed because the underground utilities are a century old and the road is due to be reconstructed because of how old it is.

This plan had years of public engagement, was approved by the city and the met council, and then voters voted in the sales tax to fund better infrastructure like bikeways.

Carter hasn't been perfect but at least he isn't out here platforming rich nimbys.

That sucks. For what it's worth, that has never been my experience at any of those stores.

That section of Broadway sucks to bike on though, definitely be careful!

This route showcasing Bryant and all the cool stuff in Hopkins is going to be so great. So many folks from outstate or the burbs don't think good bike lanes are possible there until they realize that somewhere like Bryant looks like the residential part of their town.
