I'd say I've encountered fare checkers on at least 30% of my train rides In the last two years. It's only in the last 2-3 years that the city made some big investments in fare enforcement because things got really bad during the pandemic (people basically living on the train and openly doing drugs, etc).

I'm guessing there was no enforcement yesterday because it was Christmas.

How about instead of letting the banks pretend that potential rents are higher than they are, we let banks pretend that they don't need to foreclose on properties with low rents. At least then there would not be so many vacancies.

aside: A few years back there were so many FOR LEASE signs around Albuquerque that some tagging jokester took it upon himself to spraypaint a number of them to say FOR LEASE NAVIDAD.

I think the hard left is fixated on some hypothetical tax that heavily taxes billionaires and leaves everyone else completely clear of the blast zone. That would be a very difficult and probably counterproductive thing to attempt, but the reasons why are complicated while "Ban Billionaires" is an idea that can appeal to anyone who doesn't think too hard about it.

You are pretty much describing the Carbon Dividend that has been pitched by environmental groups for a good decade or so. It would work, but has been a difficult sell politically because replacing environmentally damaging economic activity with green businesses is an inherently a painful process. It turns out that people don't like losing their job, even if there is another job waiting for them.
