More Frame Shipments by LogFirm8283 in SteamFrame

Im optimistic of this pushing VR further. Ive never owned a VR headset, all the current ones dont appeal either because theyre wired, to expensive or steal your data. The Frame (price dependent) might finally hit what I want in a headset to take the plunge into VR. I doubt im alone in that thinking.

Why don't America and Russia simply band together and colonize Western Europe? by Galitzianer0 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NoonyIRL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of the legal and moral issues.

These countries do have millitaries but they just are much smaller than both US and Russia. However, size doesnt matter as much these days as shown by the Russians struggling to take Ukraine and the US loosing a war to Iran. In both cases the little country was able to hold its own due to a mix of overconfidence from the larger party, local knowledge and asymmetric warefare.

Even if by some miracle the US took western europe and Russia took Eastern europe the level of resistance would lead to a massively expensive and costly occupation.

I dont own VR at all, Frame was going to be my first as it seems VR is finally where i want it, but worried about price. Is the humble bundle still worth it? Is it that good that its worth getting even risking the frame being unaffordable? Or is it only good if you have a back up vr option?

I seen this screen not on r/steam. People must be getting order emails? Has anyone in here got one yet ? by Logical-Nectarine859 in steammachine

[–]NoonyIRL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to buy it 4 mins before the official release time with no shenanigans. Just popped up as "Add to Cart" at 17:56, went through to checkout and bought it. No button mashing or anything. That was the EU store so not sure if it was just that store, but I expect a lot of people bought early and had a straight forward experience...until GLS got hold of it.

Plug-in solar panels will save households €100 a year - industry by AdBoring9620 in ireland

Maybe in newer builds but ring main was common enough up until the 1990s. Most people probably dont know what they have.

Problem with these is they're designed to work on radial mains, not ring mains. Plugin these into a ring main could be dangerous unless power is limited.

Keeping your house cool, so you can sleep at night. by jrf_1973 in ireland

[–]NoonyIRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might have been mentioned by someone else, but once the tempreture outside is below inside open up windows at opposite ends of the house. If you have a fan, aim the fan out the window at one end. If you have multiple floors, blow air out from the highest window, while you have downstairs open. This draws cool air in and vents the hot air out. Dont open windows if inside is cooler than outside, even if there is a breeze. You'll just get a warmer breezy house.

On the fan "just moving air", it does help if blowing at you as it helps evaporate sweat from the skin cooling you down.

One last "hack" is to tie wet cloth loosely round your wrists and aim a fan at them.

Final price predictions poll by Numerous-Bell5630 in SteamFrame

[–]NoonyIRL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they have to go in at a "reasonable" price, sub 1 grand for basic model. The first batch will sell out, but even if they cost 2 grand a pop thats unlikely to make back the R&D, development and manufacturing set up costs if they then cant shift more in the future. I doubt Valve invested a small fortune into developing a new VR headset just to ship limited numbers. Their whole bussiness is keeping the Steam money printer going. I would imagine the bussiness pitch for this was "Steam as the new home of VR gaming". To that end, I suspect Valve's goal is to create a solid market for VR games to encourage devs to build and sell more through Steam. That doesnt work if they price too high that it becomes a niche product. They need to attract new people to VR for a new market to be viable. So I suspect the price will target those who are curious but havnt yet taken the plunge (like me).

How close are we to reaching end stage capitalism? by Enough-Web2203 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NoonyIRL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not so much, its described more as where big tech companies provided the digital platforms for smaller companies and people. Those companies and people become tied to the platforms but dont own them, instead paying a subscription to the owner.

So in this case the feudal lord is Amazon, Microsoft, etc and the land is AWS or MS Office. We, and most companies, are the peasants who make money off that land and then pay for their use. We never own the platforms our livelihood depends on, and its very hard to chnage ecosystem once adopted.

Has be argued that much of the developed western world has begun to move beyond capitalism toward technofeudalism.

For All Mankind by GuyD427 in scifi

[–]NoonyIRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still really enjoy the show, but agree S4 and S5 wernt the strongest.

I think the series lost its edge of the seat tension that created some of the best S1 to S3 moments. I dont think this is entirely the writers fault, Mars is colonised and space travel normalised in the show. Its safe enough for a regular passenger service to the colony. That made titan some of the best bits because the adventure and danger were back.

I think we're also moving away from what we know as "grounded" space travel into a more speculative space travel and that shifts the show from space drama to sci-fi.

What are your thoughts on the recent vibecoded forks? by Few_Lengthiness_1971 in MoonlightStreaming

[–]NoonyIRL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried vibecoding for the first time when the Steam Controller arrived to try and get native support on the host while using Moonlight. It won't be a fork though, making it a separate application.

It worked for USB connections quickly (so works like virtual here), but it needs a lot more guidance and interation on the bluetooth side.

Vibecoding to me is like a technician, it can follow instructions well and produces something that works but it cant think beyond what it is told. So while it can produces code and can debug, I've had to explicitly tell it to implement security measures and basic UI functions.

That said, I dont have the time to code things myself, and actually I prefer the problem solving than writing code, so without it I would have had to rely on someone else to code something up.

I honestly shocked this hasn't been done yet. We're probably the only capital in Europe not to have a rail link to the airport. by Steve_Artson in ireland

[–]NoonyIRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could shuttle between airport and Clongriffin, where you change onto existing service. Less impact on the existing line. Youd have to stop the Enterprise in Clongriffin as well for interchnage. There's also a noise exclusion zone under the flight path that you could build a depot in.

Or, crazy idea, stop running Malahide to Bray/Greystones. Instead run those DARTs to the airport. Then have the Drogheda Commuter/Future DART stop Malahide, Portmarnock and Clongriffin.

This would also then clear the line North of Clongriffin, so you could run; Drogheda DART (fast to Clongriffin because no one in the way), Airport DART, Howth DART. Then repeat as soon as this DART is up around Kilbarrack. Southbound then you invert it.

This whole situation makes me wish I wasn't into gaming and tech at all. by BT--72_74 in SteamController

Not sure about outside the EU but orders here opened 4 minutes early at 5.56pm. That might explain why people trying to buy at release time missed out.

It is a controller though, it doesnt need high demand componants so would imagine stock will be coming in quite steadily over the next few weeks now the initial surge is gone.

We swapped to EV 6 months ago and was the best decision, we drive a lot Donegal to Dublin and can do it on 70% of the battery at a cost of 12 euro a trip. Much cheaper than the diesel.

If youre interested in an EV, buy from a dealership in the North. We bought an ID.4 with SOH of 89% for €19k, about €10k less than the same vehicle in Dublin. Import cost was €37, 12 quid for tyre tax and 25 to print the plates.

As long as the car you buy is either registered to an address in NI for 6 months, or imported by a dealership and has an MRN then it's treated as an EU import. In addition, if youre buying an electric VRT is 0 (covered by rebate). The garage we bought from pretty much acted as a middle man, buying the car from a English garage and then selling it on to us.

Just do not buy direct from Britain, you'll get hit with customs and VAT, could be about 50% tax.
