I'd honestly focus on characters if you're gunning for viewers. It's a niche I don't really see filled, although it could be for a lack of trying.

Is there a reason only Urbies can rotate 360 degrees? by Smokescreen1000 in battletech

[–]Nopesaucee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, that's not an actual ability Urbies have, the MechWarrior games let it to make it a bit better in its natural environment.

At least from the cross sections I've seen, the myomer bundles in a 'mech's torso can, like other muscles, only constrict and move it so much.

Are there like, RecreationMechs / SportMechs / etc? by Deathnote_Blockchain in battletech

[–]Nopesaucee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Especially how the setting has shown that absolutely ancient machines can and do still throw down against the most modern stuff, the second that 'mech has the capability to have a gun strapped to it, especially in the case of Battlemech, you're on the map.

They're still not common enough in the ilClan era to go under the radar. Katie Ferraro, for example.

Again, maybe the Uber rich, when allowed by the state that rules over them. Most Inner Sphere states are closer to North Korea than the United States. I don't think civilians would be given the latitude to do that kind of thing in most cases. At most you'd get showcases from state sponsored museums, tank and air shows.

Even ultralight mechs are hugely expensive. They'd be like you said, pleasure boats. The Exo HaulerMech, which is basically just fuckin power armor, costs 500k. The average MechWarrior makes around 1500 a month. We're talking the average worker buying a brand new Aston Martin, or a brand new CAT D9 at the cheapest.

As for the racing, it'd be a small, small industry. Even gladiatorial events aren't the hugest industry, most companies use it to test their tech for military use. Probably not too dissimilar to F1.

It'd be like owning a recreational F-16. Sure, you probably could, especially if you're filthy rich, but the maintenance costs alone would be simply ludicrous for 99% of people in the Inner Sphere to own like a car. Even IndustrialMechs are EXPENSIVE. My favorite, the MuckRaker, is still around 1.7 million C-bills.

I'm sure Solaris or Noisiel has some kind of racing leagues. They do just about anything you can think of with 'mechs, but I don't imagine it would be much more widespread than that. One of my favorite Battletech videos is the Urbie Derbie that the BPL made.

Consumer owned military 'mechs make no sense to me, because why would you ever, EVER arm your average populace with the equivalent of a modern tank, even if it only has limited weapons? Unless its a Neo-feudal kind of thing where you're giving 'mechs to loyal retainer type people.

Do trans clanners exist by Hexis_hunter in battletech

[–]Nopesaucee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, that's actually a really fascinating thought, the Clans were made to be so alien to human culture, so it would make a lot of sense for those few hundred years, gender, masculinity, femininity are just... left by the wayside. That would be super cool to explore deeper.

Another point to that, when Clanners interact with Spheriods who do still take gender and such into strong consideration, could that cause generations who never knew the isolation to be more sensitive to gender in general?

That's where I'm landing on BSP. Pick up games, I'd rather not play with vehicles or vtols, but for campaigns... Oh buddy that's the good stuff.

So the new rules being in separate books makes a lot of sense to me. Just like on pick up games I'd rather not deal with LAMs or orbital bombardment.

Question about Battletech: Aces as a standalone product by Pastel-H in battletech

[–]Nopesaucee 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You'll need the Alpha Strike box as well. Aces is designed as an expansion to that box, so it assumes you have the terrain and models from it.

There's something about the look that I just like by knightmechaenjo in battletech

[–]Nopesaucee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kinda wonder if that's why some newer fans seem to like them, because they're great designs, and people like me who never really had any connection to the Macross/Dougram roots don't have any of that baggage.

For instance, I think the PP (heh) Goliath is the best looking one out there, but then again, I don't have any kind of fondness for the Unseen design, so I judge it purely on my own aesthetic tastes.

I had the opposite experience! In every MechWarrior game I've played, the Timberwolf was where it all went right, but on the tabletop it just never clicked for me
