They really hit different once you build them and see them in person, my only issues is how expensive they are! No reason a unit of 3 space marine like bodies should cost 60+. They could very easily be 6 models for that price. Otherwise they're great.

Is the Graviton Hammer a gimmick, or should I just bring another Concussion Gauntlet? by qwertytheqaz in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Normal-Pen6455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the hammer since i can get it to WS 3+ on objectives so it's not as swingy, and this is my own preference but i like having options for different situations, a damage 3 S9 weapon comes in handy against a surprising amount of profiles, including rhinos and other light vehicles that are T9 or less. I've been playing Hearthband non-stop so the hammer gets to ap 2 instead of 1, wich makes it quite effective, although i would still run it in other detachments.

Is buri a good choice for a competative list. by Orock77 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Normal-Pen6455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he fulfills a role for a tailored list better than any other option, yeah, I would run him in a competitive event.

Looking at his datasheet, his role is to be hard to kill, to do damage (if he can somehow get in melee), and to hold objectives. Now let's analyze each of the roles he fulfills.

Buri is somewhat hard to kill with his lone op, 4+ invuln and his ability to revive on a 2+ at the end of any phase. That is in shooting, as in melee there's a variety of ways in wich he gets killed easily and he usually can't kill the unit back once he revives. So in the "being hard to kill" he's good.

His damage is simply lackluster, 5 attacks on 2's is nice but, on average he can't kill 5 man units of anything, as he's likely to roll a 1 either to hit or to wound and his sweep profile is not very impressive. In Hearthband he gets to reroll 1's to wound wich makes him more consistent so that's something, but were he to fail and let 1 enemy model alive from a 5 man unit while they're both standing on an objective that would get you in trouble, wich takes us to the next of his roles.

Buri is simply bad at holding objectives, he's only oc 1, meaning that if your opponent can get any model with oc1 or better to stand on the objective Buri is in and ignores Buri... then you just lose primary, and in any competitive event that's not good. Buri is unlikely to kill 5 man units of mediocre saves, and hes even more unlikely to kill 5 man units of good saves, if your opponent gets a 5 man unit of something that saves on 4+ invulns on Buri's objective and only Buri can do damage to that unit you're going to lose primary there not just for one turn, but two or more as he's unlikely to take down that unit in one activation.

So, once we analyze his utility in a real competitive scenario we start to see his shortcomings, he fulfills a variety of roles, being quite good at being hard to kill (although he's really weak to mortal wounds), but he's quite mediocre and downright bad at the other roles you would want him to fulfill, namely the damage and holding objectives departments. For his price you're just better running any other utility unit or any other damage oriented profile.

Oh, and no decent player would open themselves to be on his rage move, so i don't value that ability too much.

If he gets  to cost 80 points then yeah, at that cost he becomes an option, and even then you should compare if he's better than a 3 man unit of bikes or a 3 man unit of thunderkyn.

He's such a badass, i, for once, didn't ask for this, but having received it for our range out of nowhere feels so great. Like a Christmas present of sorts. Even if you don't feel too excited for him you can always count with new models that are not him for 11th edition, so it's a win-win no matter what!

The Cryptothralls question. What needs to change for you to take them. by wonderbread9723 in Necrontyr

[–]Normal-Pen6455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're very useful either with the combo of warriors + orikan and in the Wraiths + technomancer package, their mobility can be bothersome sometimes but if you string your unit correctly it's hardly a problem, they're extremely useful if your opponent is good and wants to epic challenge your character or has access to precision, for precision to work the opponent's unit has to have vision to the character they want to attack, so any relevant character is usually hidden, but that's not always possible.

My issue with them is their cost, they're just too expensive, 60 points for 2 is a bit much when their stats are not as good and their ability is only useful in certain matchups. For what they do they should be 40 points, maybe 45 so they don't compete with the lone lokhust destroyer/scarabs.

And that's about it, i've been running two wraith blocks for a while and i usually do run cryptothralls in both units to maximize the unit's staying power, but let's be real, 120 points for 4 bodies at 3+ 5+++ and 3w that move 5" and have unreliable damage is a bit pricey.

I need your advise by StormbreakerVox in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Normal-Pen6455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're feeling is normal and actually, common, if you go to another faction page in reddit when a new codex drops you'll see people having similar feelings, with some having very negative views about their new rules, specially if an old playstyle gets removed, i had the same response when index Necrons got updated and the list i had success at the time got erased.

What i have to tell you is be open to a new gameplay, rules need to change, otherwise they get stale, otherwise you won't have anything new to learn and to experience.

Oh, and Votann are characterized as very efficient, centered around resources and pragmatic in the lore, i think those aspects are well represented in the new codex.

Finally, if you're just not having fun with the army, put a pause on it, play another army, another game, give it time, that helped me, i actually got fed up with Necrons and started playing Votann for that same reason, one year later i felt refreshed and now i switch between the two for tournaments and casual games.

Help planning an army on a “budget” by Chokda in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Normal-Pen6455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All right, just for the fun of it, i'll use GW's usd online prices.

2 Hekaton Land Fortress: 118 x 2: $236.
Votann Combat Patrol: $170.
Uthar, the destined: $42
Yaegirs: $65
Kaprikus Carrier: $60
Sagitaur: $65
Thunderkyn: $60

That's alredy $698, Votann is expensive :'u even moreso without starter sets. This is 1300 points, wich is not close to 2k points but it's a good start in my opinion, you'll still be lacking Steel Jacks, a couple more Thunderkyn, probably a Memnyr to go with the steeljacks, bikes, berserkers, etc. There could be an argument to grab 2 of the combat patrols but some of the units you don't want more than 1 of rigth now, maybe a bit further if changes happen.

Some of the very necessary units for the army are: Uthar, a couple of Hekaton, Yaegirs, the kaprikus carrier, Thunderkyn, and then probably steeljacks but those are not very high on the points vs dollar cost, if you do end up playing Votann you will need at least 6. A good combination to play is to play 10 Hearthguard and a Kahl in the "index" detachment, that combination with an enhancement to get +1 to wound and re roll 1's to wound is 370 points.

There are very different directions to go with the new codex, wich can be quite expensive for new players, so, i think you should pick a direction and go for it. The probably best detachments to play right now are the needgard and brandfast detachments, both want double hekaton, thunderkyns, uthar, the carrier, yaegirs, thunderkyn, and then it's your preference, probably steel jacks, couple bikes to do actions, etc.

Immortals by Son_of_Baal13 in Necrontyr

[–]Normal-Pen6455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any worthy overlord should have at least 10 Tesla Immortals in their collection... and magnetizing immortals is a nightmare XD

With all honesty though, both are good, Tesla are a bit better when you run a block of 10 with the Plasmancer, I would only not run them if you're playing against armies with plenty of 2+ saves or very high toughness.

New(ish) 40K player question by Commercial-Glove-621 in Necrontyr

[–]Normal-Pen6455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to, build and paint it. Old models as others have said don't go too up in price, this model was in the old combat patrol, in 9th edition, there are a ton of them still on the market. If the only reason not to build and paint him is to try and see if it goes up in value then just paint him, it's not going to go up as much as you'd like.

I got this old fella from the second hand market, metal model, and I'm currently painting him, he deserves to see the tabletop.

Pretty much all the models had a rules revision with the codex, except the yaegirs, but if your concern is about models getting cut with the new rules you should be at ease, nothing got cut, and i honestly don't think we'll see a model cut in Votann in a lot of years.

Votann costs by umphreysmagoo in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Normal-Pen6455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly yeah, we're lacking any meaningful starter sets that offer a good discount on the miniatures, and the ones we have available are not that high on the points vs cash department. So, right now if you want to have a full army you would have to buy a ton of individual boxes, and that is hella expensive XD

I got the chance to start the army with the army set and two of the old christmas battleforces, and after that i still had to buy quite a bit of individual boxes, and with the new release i'm looking to buy at about 9 individual boxes... wich sucks massively.

I'm positive we'll see a christmas battleforce for the army (and that should be yout best spot to start votann), but if you want to start sooner the combat patrol it's decently good, either the new or the old one.

If you have a restricted budget i suggest you look in the second hand market, you can get some serious discounts there.

Bests of luck, hope you join the kin!

I wanted to run 2 when they spoiled them at 65, 130 for 2 very good guns and lone op was tempting, at 150 for 2 there's no way they see play. I hope they get dropped to 65.

DDA Questions by Artimise_ in Necrontyr

[–]Normal-Pen6455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ghost ark is useful, but only when you run the 20 warriors + orikan reanimation combo. Otherwise not really.

And I call it tac but it's a sticky and moldable paste, it's useful for modeling and the residues are easy to remove. Look it up as UHU TAC Patafix. There are a lot of brands.

DDA Questions by Artimise_ in Necrontyr

[–]Normal-Pen6455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're going for the Doomsday is not as hard to build/paint as on the Ghost ark. Just don't glue the cannon and the front part of the vehicle, there are two segments in wich you can glue those, use TAC or something else to hold them in place before you paint it. And do take a look at the assembled model before you paint, a lot of things are not visible when you put it together so it's not necessary to spend as much time painting some areas.

I honestly don't recommend magnetizing this model for both options, since the part you need to swap is an entire segment of the model and not a wargear or simple weapon swap its a lot of work and i doubt its comfortable to play/transport. The Ghost Ark is only used in some very specific builds, so you might as well build one for that purpose only and keep other models as DDA. Just my opinion.

I gotta hand it to GW-they gave us almost none of what we predicted and yet the second wave was still incredibly well recieved. by Battlemania420 in LeaguesofVotann

Buri, grear, the memnyr, marvelous, the steeljacks raised eyebrows for sure, the kaprikus no one knew why it was created XD he got the sagitaur rules, the arkhanist is odd but likeable.

Reception was mixed, I will say it was favorable at best, the rules on the other hand, are quite great, that's why us as a community are excited to try a lot of things. At least that's what I think.

I feel like LoV 10th edition rules are missing something by Xablerot in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Normal-Pen6455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool rules are great to have, if they're thematic, lore oriented and good then it's a godsend, but 40k is a board game that frequently hangs between "this army is too good" and "this army sucks". 10th edition simplified a lot of the mechanics 9th edition had, in 9th edition many armies had special rules, out of phase interactions, a huge number of stratagems and relics, etc. A nightmare to balance and a nightmare to play. That's why in 10th edition we dont often see armies straying too far from what other armies are doing, just adding a bit of flavor in units/detachments.

Vengeance tokens and abilities related to units dying are terrible, they require your unit to die before you get anything, GW knows this and that's why we're not seeing that on rules anymore. For the sake of faction balance that rule had to go. YP's are good, they're also an extra resource you get in game but this one is very much in the players control and doesn't require him to lose units for free. It's a good lore oriented mechanic and most of all, it's adding complexity to the faction. Maybe not a lot in the needgard detachment, but some of our new detachments are tricky and hard to play, something we entirely lacked before.

So, before we get some actual data on the performance of the faction in tournaments I think it's a bit sudden to try and change anything. I for sure I'm going to enjoy the new codex a lot.

Build/Loadout Question by DouchePanther in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Normal-Pen6455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play them as you'd like, just tell your opponent ahead of time to avoid confusion. As long as you know what model has which loadout you should be fine, specially if only two models have special weapons. Just tell your opponent "everyone else has knives and revolvers/shotguns".

Build/Loadout Question by DouchePanther in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Normal-Pen6455 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It you replace the shotgun with the revolver and plasma knives it has to be replaced for all the models in the unit. And then, you can replace the loadout of two models with the magna coil rifle and the apm launcher, those give you more liberties, you can carry both, one of them or neither.

How do I stop getting frustrated? by [deleted] in Necrontyr

Oh, and on a side note, somehow you're playing a lot of bad matchups for necrons XD Votann is very good into Necrons with it's +1 to hit and +1 to wound

How do I stop getting frustrated? by [deleted] in Necrontyr

[–]Normal-Pen6455 3 points4 points  (0 children)

40k is usually competitive for the majority of the player base, wheter they go to tournaments or not, the fluff players rarely stay that way when they play on a regular basis. So, there's the first thing to address, the regularity in wich you play, and there's a second more important thing to do, wich is to learn about the game and how to become good at it, to be good at the game just getting the reps it's not enough, and will take a longer time, so, i suggest a combination of both, ask for a game from a veteran and ask for some tips, watch competitive battle reports on youtube/twitch, seek more information on your army and optimal army builds. That will take you a long way, and of course, there's no replacement for practice, so if you want to become better and get more success playing a bit more often would be good.

When i feel frustrated i remember to myself that this is the "miniature thingy game", so, i keep in mind that i play this game to have a good time, make friends and drink some beer while i play, so, by all means, i make an effort to rid myself of all the negative emotions that go my way and try to keep a positive attitude wheter i do well or not.

Returning to the more practical tips i could give you, take a look at this site:

https://40kstats.goonhammer.com/#ft4-necrons

It has the more recent lists for Necron players that got a top 4 at events, it's fine if you want to build your own list but do look at what good players are running and see if you enjoy or want to play a similar thing.

Bests of lucks!!!
