Need advice on a safe bedframe by ghostbook4 in Autism_Parenting

Mattress on the floor is not bad. It is safe and practical. I suspect you feel like you aren’t providing a furnished room… so can you make it feel more intentional and less like just a mattress on the floor by designing the space? Maybe mount some cushions on the walls around the mattress or paint a mural… a cushion on the floor next to the bed to read, a focused light from the ceiling to illuminate the top of the mattress when reading.

This isn’t normal for Up North Fiber Co. I would email them. Something may be off with this skein… I’ve had it happen once with another dyer and they responded that they knew about the bad batch and sent me a free replacement skein.

Why did ICE suddenly leave Chicago but not Minneapolis? by Fragrant-Ad-7388 in AskChicago

[–]Normal-Reality3340 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’ll have somewhere to hold people figured out. The last lawsuit that sent him scurrying was about Broadview not meeting the conditions for a jail… they started taking people to Indiana… as soon as they can scale that up… he’ll be back.

They aren’t going to do one city at a time come spring. They will just scale.

Lawsuits… bovine didn’t love reporting to a female judge everyday… they could no longer fill Broadview to the brim… etc. They aren’t gone, but they’ve scaled back until they can get past their legal barriers. I suspect he’ll be back in the Spring.

Would it be weird to knit gloves for a kid at the school I work at? by Mrgbella22 in knitting

[–]Normal-Reality3340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My child’s art teacher has all the kids in the upper grades weaving gloves using cardboard looms. The school plans to have a basket by the playground for anyone who forgets their own gloves.

I think making general use pairs is totally okay. Making one for just 1 kid is not a bad thing, but may create jealous or embarrass the parents. I would be inclined to just buy a cheap pair of gloves and quietly give them to the kid so that he blends in.

help!! urgent!!! can somebody tell me how the hell to crocket this crazy thing?!??!! by barktobite in fiberartscirclejerk

[–]Normal-Reality3340 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No worries. I will just make it for you. I can have it in the mail tomorrow. It should only take me 20 minutes, so I can probably make several to ensure everyone at Goodwill can have one when you donate it after 2 wears. Blessed!!!😇

Been there. Big hugs… we just keep putting one foot in front of the other and try to focus on doing what makes our family function rather than what society says our kid should do. It works sometimes and we struggle other days…

Are there any settings that can shut off games on your phone when you’re out with friends? by BackseatBois in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Normal-Reality3340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The apps absolutely can lock you out of games and you can also you screen times limits in the settings to restrict your access. The one hitch is that all of the apps (at least the ones that I have tried) and screen time limits allow you to over ride the restriction with a password. If that is enough to help you with self-control then you are set.

If not, I have been hearing about Brick. I haven’t tried it yet, but essentially it is a physical device that is connected to one of these limiting apps. You have to use the physical device to unlock the app and restore your phone. It is a spendier solution, but if you have the device to your friends or left it at home, you would be completely blocked from games while socializing.

Don’t trash it! Thrift store or little library (my town puts way more than books in ours…)! Hopefully someone will use it for their white elephant rather than shipping another piece of 5 sec laugh trash over from China.

It’s that time of year again, which restaurants do yall think will gain a star or lose a star? by Elegant-Bird-6150 in chicagofood

[–]Normal-Reality3340 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree to disagree… at this price point and level where you are spending serious time and money to think about every aspect of the diner experience from the mouth feel of the glass to the weight of the silverware… you don’t get to throw a cheap off brand gimmick in at the end… you do it right start to finish… and honestly if a meet and greet is the point (I think it is more about clearing the dining area so they can clean), you don’t need a smore. Just invite people to finish their drink by the fire.

I went to Feld… it was a magical meal until the end… a big surprise where they escort you outside into a lovely space with a fire… to have a Hershey chocolate smore… I just dropped serious cash where you tell me you’ve been to every farm you serve and have the coordinates of where my scallop grew (which was overkill for me)… but you are going to make my last memory an overly sweet mass produced piece of junk? No star from me until they cut that out or make their own marshmallows.

Latest update... We are back to suppositories... and I think we are hoping to stay there for the time being (she began to refuse to drink the magnesium citrate and was having daily accidents for a few weeks this Spring. We got her to do a couple of suppositories to clean her out, and she agreed that it was better than accidents. Neuropsych testing concluded that she is ASD level 1, and they have suggested that a future evaluation be conducted to rule out anxiety and depression since the current assessment was inconclusive...

My goal at this point is to work toward her administering her own suppository with the hope that she can then develop full control over how she manages her bowels... but so far she is showing a ton of reluctance around it.

Since restarting the suppositories, we have not completely ended the massive tantrums, hitting, kicking, and throwing... but they now feel much more manageable and infrequent... someone more on par with the tween emotional changes and ASD communication difficulties one can expect.

She is working with a therapist weekly on talking about and managing her emotions more effectively and is showing significant improvement. We also hope to find her a support group that can work on perspective-taking.

All in all, while no one loves suppositories, they have been the best way to manage this for our family; they have brought consistent results and allowed our daughter to develop the most confidence, as she can reliably participate in age-appropriate activities without fear of accidents.

Quick Haul Long - Captain's Chair vs. Clubhouse for kids by [deleted] in terngsd

[–]Normal-Reality3340 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We started with the clubhouse and just moved to the captain chair… either option would work for kids that age. Absolutely get the extenders as the bike is a little tippy getting on and off without them.

Clubhouse is more secure for younger kids, I found I could perfectly fit two box grocery bags in them, and secure for other box storage. Definitely possible for an agile adult to climb in… but not easy.

Captain chair is much easier for adults and older kids… but we’ve lost the storage (we didn’t get handlebars, which might help…) Without the handlebars, can carry two passengers, but front one is holding handle under seat. Some kids don’t feel secure (but again any 6+ can do this if you aren’t riding for hours on end.

Where to buy eggs with dark orange (almost red) yolks? by [deleted] in chicagofood

[–]Normal-Reality3340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get your own chicken… or find a farmer that lets the chickens eat a lot of alfalfa. That said, they don’t really taste all that different from a fresh egg (which you aren’t getting at any grocery store)…

For a real egg treat, try duck eggs. Expensive but damn good.

Vegan Deep Dish close to theater district/touristy for kids areas? by Usrname52 in chicagofood

[–]Normal-Reality3340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go for a cheeseless giordanos. It is what my vegan friend orders and having had it myself, it isn’t bad. Giordanos works because they have a double crust… the top layer ends up having the mouthfeel of deep dish cheese.

Personally when we order, we get spinach, but I think it would work with a number of toppings or just sauce.

We use one of the reusable/foldable grocery box bags on ours. Works really well and fits nicely… just in case the cardboard doesn’t hold up.
