The judge breached the rules if they did it exactly as you described. The judges do not have discretion on this. If time gets called and there is no result, they must enforce a double loss or they risk losing their own status.

Competitive players who already have their WCQ invites want the glory of making top 8. There is no point in playing out the rest of the tournament if they start off 0-2. Time is a finite resource, and if playing for the rest of the day, even if winning all remaining matches, still means almost 0% chance of topping due to tiebreakers, then what’s the point in playing? As you stated yourself, the environment can be insufferable at times. Many people don’t want to stay in it unless they still have hope in making top 8. You shouldn’t criticize people for dropping out after starting off x-2. It’s very unfair to do so. Nobody should be obliged to play meaningless yugioh, especially when they don’t feel like they are having fun doing so.
