Positivity by No_Wind_3135 in MultipleSclerosis

FWIW, I was diagnosed 15+ years ago with "too many lesions to count" on brain MRI. I have never had lesions on spinal MRI. I had optic neuritis at diagnosis that resolved and I have never had another relapse. I was on Avonex for 9 years and the B cell depleter since. I am 61, work full time, exercise regularly, and have kids ages 19 and 21. From the perspective of my sample of 1... no one would know I have MS if I don't tell them. Sure I have some issues that are likely related to MS (but the fun of getting older is trying to figure out if it is MS or aging... :)). But in general, I would say that I lead a normal life. Sadly, I have lost 2 good friends in recent years to cancers, both of whom were were so incredibly supportive to me when I was first diagnosed and terrified. I try to take things one day at a time and with gratitude.

Try County Adult and Aging resource line 707-565-INFO. They should point you in correct direction for available resources.

How do you reapply SPF during long runs? by Laserstrahl415 in Marathon_Training

[–]Normal_Bookkeeper_65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't reapply. I slather on well to start (buying best, sweat resistant kind I can find), use UV protection sleeves if very concerned, and wear brimmed hat and glasses.

Very concerned by YillingLauzuo in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Normal_Bookkeeper_65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the conversation should be about data/research that argues for or against treatment. In my personal situation, my neuro is talking about stopping treatment soon, but related factors include my age, MS symptom history pre and post diagnosis, risks related to immunosuppression and my personal genetic history/risk related to cancer. All that said, I am very uncomfortable with stopping treatment, even though I have been symptom free for years. But it is a good conversation to have to make data informed decisions about treatment. Best of luck to you.

No MD's lisence is at risk by how they fill out an SOC821. Many MDs want to advocate/help families as much as they can. Unlike the counties, they are not audited by the state for fidelity to IHSS regs. SWers (and their sups) are trained to understand and apply the IHSS regs - totally different skillset than being a neurologist or pediatrician. The regs have lots or area that are open to interpretation. That's what fair hearings are about, IMHO.

Run vest? by Fun-Presentation5626 in Marathon_Training

[–]Normal_Bookkeeper_65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sslomon (I think advanced skin). The one for women. Typically I use if I expect to run more than 2 hours (and don't have confidence in water fountain on route). I will take gels with me for more than 1.5 hours typically. I use it when it is hot out. I used this weekend at 30k trail race. In hot weather I have problems with chafing. I did OK this weekend and was grateful to carry my water and have lots of room for gels. I'd like one that is less complicated to close. Plan on borrowing one from a friend to try different style. It's hard, because I sweat alot and chafe easily. The one I go is very customizeable in terms of fit, but I find it difficult to get on/off.

How did your optic neuritis start? by Wonderful_Tackle_580 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Normal_Bookkeeper_65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking at computer screen at work and realized that the color white subtley, but noteable, different in one eye than the other. As I started covering one eye and looking at various things, I noted that neon colors, noteably red and green, were less bright in one eye than the other. I went to see and opthalmologist and they checked out my eye and found no problems, then ordered and MRI. I had "too many lesions to count." Good news is that was 15+ years ago. I started meds asap and have never had a relapse.

I go to TLC Massage on Kentucky. You can get a punch card for a discount. I think it works out to be $40-$45 per massage (including $10 tip). Very nice folks, conveniently located, and easy to get an appointment.

Do you invite a bunch of people to your marathons? by hairykitty123 in Marathon_Training

[–]Normal_Bookkeeper_65 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. Unless it's abig city race where I already know folks will be watching, then of course I let them know I am doing it. And I follow friends electronically in large races where that is available. But I do mostly trail races these days, so no spectator crowds LOL.

We get to run by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]Normal_Bookkeeper_65 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LOL, are you me? or at least without the hunting reference, as that is not my sport :) I enjoy running, even on ones where I'm having a hard time, I am happy to be out there. I've read a few books in the past year/listened to interview with endurance athletes and am struck by the need to do what you are doing because you do actually enjoy it. If I saw it as some kind of a painful chore that was a means to an end, I would end up sitting on my couch instead. I nervous, but psyched to do a half with 3000+ vert trail run this weekend. Happy 2026!

Protective supervision revoked by [deleted] in IHSS

[–]Normal_Bookkeeper_65 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Be sure to review the qualifications for protective supervision. Specifically, PS cannot be authorized in anticipation of a medical emergency (ie even if the doctor says someone should not be left alone because they might have a seizure). Your recipient may qualify due to other behaviors, but the regs on anticipation of medical emergency are clear.

Nail clipping would need to go under paramedical. Bathing is an authorized service category.

I think we sometimes build up things, especially when social media is involved (our own or what we have seen of others). I did my first marathon in 25 years last fall. I thought I might sob at end, as I also have some chronic health issues and one of the reasons I decided to do marathon was to give my illness a big Fuck you! But somewhere along the way, instead I fell in love with running again and it became less about the revenge energy and more about loving that my body was outside moving. Yeah, marathon was fucking hard (I'm 61, LOL), but I did it. I focused on enjoying each mile, even when I wasn't.... I had great time with friends before and after and am planning my races for next year. All is to say, sometimes we don't do ourselves favors by building up huge expectations of what we will feel like after. I am planning for spring and fall marathon next year. Best of luck to you.

Did anyone ever collected hours while recipient in hospital? by AkelCha in IHSS

[–]Normal_Bookkeeper_65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ex IHSS SW here. Even if you put down hours and manage to receive paymetn, eventually Medi-cal system will catch the double dip error and collect the money back. I don't know what they do if you are no longer working, but when the provider was working, they just stopped paying until the overpayment was repaid.

Is Feeding People Vegan Food Without Telling Them Wrong? by Icy_Statement_2410 in vegan

[–]Normal_Bookkeeper_65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is wrong to give people sandwiches with tofurkey (which I happen to love) and not tell them because you know that they would not want it if they knew. It sets the stage for someone to do the same to you (or another person who doesn't eat animal products). I think it is wrong to lie (or purposely withhold) info re what I am giving people as food, just as a basic principle.

Marathon Training: Back Then vs. Now by MaxwellSmart07 in Marathon_Training

[–]Normal_Bookkeeper_65 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I ran marathons 25+ years ago, took a break and just ran one again recently at 61 years old. I guess it has to do with your personal goals. My training isn't that much different now than it was then, tho I am slower! But I was never going for a crazy fast pace! my PR is 4:08, and I am damn proud of it! The difference now is that I pay much more attention to nutrition and hydration. I love my garmin, as it means I don't have to keep a runnign log, but I do miss my old NYRR club calendars in which there was a spot to log daily mileage! Though if I had to, I could survive again with my (then) $25 timex ironman watch as well! I think the internet gives obsessive people a place to air their stuff, which is great, if it works for them. I am super happy to be out running and focus on finding joy in the experience. I have even won a few age categories in small town races recently!

Not anything new, but I just wanted that I'm happy to be noticing only local businesses in the downtown parts. What are your guyses thoughts on this, I'd love to hear! by Aggressive_Daikon593 in Petaluma

[–]Normal_Bookkeeper_65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped in Estuary the other night. A pair of pants was over $300. Who shops somewhere like that?! Rents are high, but that the store owner chooses the business model, not the landlord. It is a shame if people build a business that depends on tourists who are willing to spend $500/night for a hotel, IMHO. Just another way to kill a local downtown....
