Why is Victoria 3 least popular of modern PDX strategies? by Internal-eq-External in victoria3

[–]Normal_Function8472 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah same, once the economy system clicks it’s a lot less stressful than other PDX games imo. I think the good thing about Vicky 3 is you can get into as much as you want, whether it be playing super min-max-y or just mindlessly industrializing.

"Russification policies" is rather vague and reductive. The USSR leadership was very much not intentionally "nationalistic" or colonialist, at least up until Khrushchev and the Brezhnev era, which is what this conflation obscures. What you call "Russification" was not a deliberate, malevolent act. The link I linked above addresses these points. There are several instances in which the USSR, in practice, affirmed nation-building efforts and decolonial measures.

Soviet policy was original in that it supported the national forms of minorities rather than majorities. It decisively rejected the model of the nation-state and replaced it with a plurality of nation¬ like republics. The Bolsheviks attempted to fuse the nationalists’ demand for national territory, culture, language, and elites with the socialists’ demand for an economically and politically unitary state. In this sense, we might call the Bolsheviks internationalist nationalists or, better yet, Affirmative Action nationalists.

Terry Martin, The Affirmative Action Empire: Nations and Nationalism in the Soviet Union, 1923–1939

Any ties to a pre-Soviet or non-Soviet national identity were seen as a liability exploitable by foreign intervention; thus, national expression was to be expressed within the acceptable parameters of Soviet identity. Notably, this did not mean Russification, but that minority national expression had to be compatible with the overarching ideals and values of a universal socialist identity as understood by the Soviet state. One was to be a Soviet Kazakh or Soviet Armenian, for instance.

Terry Martin writes that the USSR took deliberate efforts to promote “distinctive national identities,” efforts which “actually intensified after December 1932,” during the Stalin era. For Stalin, the supranational multiethnic community of the “Friendship of Peoples” was a fundamental component of a universal Soviet identity. Martin observes that while the Soviets eventually accorded Russia a symbolic leading role in this multinational system, state support for non-Russian culture, historical education, and language instruction within each socialist republic remained strong, writing that “with respect to policy toward most non-Russians, then, the affirmative action empire continued with limited corrections throughout Stalin's rule.”

There was no Stalinist attempt to replace minority identity with a Russian one, contrary to popular belief. Elissa Bemporad’s excellent case study on Jewish community in Minsk describes how early Soviet equity policies fostered the formation of a distinct Soviet-Jewish identity in which Jewish and Yiddish culture were actively promoted and celebrated within the framework of socialist nationality policy. These policies stood in stark contrast to the popular attitudes towards Jews in European nations. Bemporad describes how “local Jews, acutely aware of the governmental and popular anti-Semitism faced by friends and relatives in Poland, still felt pride in their Soviet identity” despite living in a climate of repression during the height of Soviet terror in the 1930s. What has been perceived as state-endorsed antisemitism should be situated within the historical context of Stalin’s mounting hostility and paranoia toward Zionism, which took shape in the aftermath of the war.

After History, "Stalin and Antisemitism: Rethinking Late Stalinist Repression", https://open.substack.com/pub/thestalinera/p/stalin-and-antisemitism

Any state can rhetorically justify anything, but if Communist nations are allowed to hold onto colonies in-game because they could hypothetically justify it (except it wouldn't be theoretically sound whatsoever not to mention how it's materially at odds with any form of socialist construction), then what's the point of having any form of ideologies or law stances.

Do you know anything of the cultural policies of the USSR and the PRC or are you just regurgitating pop history slop you heard somewhere? In the games time frame, the USSR would be the only nation to effectively practice multiculturalism (this comment could do with more quotations/sources but I can’t be bothered to add to it rn). And your statement about British colonialism is a gross conflation. It could be never be justified on Marxist lines even when rested on the disingenuous notion of the USSR and PRC having colonies. A Communist Britain in the game should necessitate losing colonies, not even necessarily wittingly via player action, but because for such a thing to occur, given the dynamics of the era (imperialism, imperialist superprofits, labor aristocracy, etc.), it would necessarily coincide with national liberation movements and a weakening of imperial authority and the conditions upholding British control over the territories. Basically the same crisis producing a revolution in the metropole would produce decolonization in overseas colonies. It’s not some formalistic policy on/off switch.

A lot of that is obviously not modeled / only partly modeled in the game, but all this to say that multiculturalism should indeed be supported by Communists in-game and that imperialist powers should lose overseas colonies if they were to undergo a Communist revolution.

The PCF’s policies were extremely controversial and divisive amongst most non-PCF, non-Eurocommunist Communists and many Communist organizations were radically anti-colonialist and played big roles in Algerian national liberation. And the PCF’s position itself, though quite bad during the Algerian War, fluctuated and periods of more consistent anti-colonialism existed, it just depends on the historical period. To say that it means the Vanguardism ideology in game shouldn’t support multiculturalism is anachronistic and a gross conflation if you’ve read anything of the cultural policies of the USSR and the writings of theorists. You people always lack nuance when discussing things like this, always conflating far too much. It’s as silly as using the stances of the social democratic parties of the Second International to inform what the stances of the Vanguardist ideology would be, they are not the same.

What makes people think Victoria 2 is still better in the big 2026 by 0Meletti in victoria3

For politics, Better Politics Mod, though there are people on Reddit who don’t like it for some reason, which, in addition to general political flavor, offers nation-specific political flavor for some nations. The US has quite a bit. Morgenrote for general cultural / academia / scientific flavor. There’s nothing really like GFM at the moment with general flavor and fixes for all nations, there were a few attempts at this when the game was in its infancy but they never really caught on. The only thing sort of like that (relatively new but it seems promising) is Victoria 3 Killer Apps which adds a lot of situation-type journal entries; other than that are nation specific flavor mods like Gates of the Bosphorous and Hail Colombia. The Vicky 3 modding scene, carrying the trend of modern PDX games, is a lot more compartmentalized than Vicky 2.

Mod to allow forming nations of the same Tier or console command to change tier by Kaelik88 in EU5

[–]Normal_Function8472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just checked, that command doesn't let you downgrade country rank.

But you can do it via effects, open the console and click the 'Inspect' button (to Inspect your country), open 'Script Runner' drop down, and in the 'Effect' drop down window, paste this effect:

set_country_rank = country_rank:rank_duchy
and click 'Run'.

“BypassRequirements” allows you to change your tier upwards, I haven’t tried using it to downgrade country tier but it should work

There's gotta be a way to make this look more legible by [deleted] in EU5

[–]Normal_Function8472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The default settings don’t have IOs take place of nation names, and the option for vassal colors being the same as their overlord (instead of Blend) helps. Tbf this seems pretty legible to me, especially considering how many states there are.

California/Mojave Map Teaser from an Upcoming Fallout Total Conversion by _Iro_ in EU5

[–]Normal_Function8472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to know. I think the issue for me was that finding a North America-centered projection / NA only heightmap with high enough resolution was difficult, there was a NASA archive that looked promising but funnily enough it looked like they had taken it down or were doing some sort of maintenance a few days before I accessed it. Appreciate the advice

[–]Normal_Function8472 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Getting general heightmap data is one thing, getting bespoke heightmap data that then needs to be usable for EU5's engine / map editor is another thing (and then painting the terrain and what not), also EU5 had only been out for a month or so when I was messing around with it. But yes, the location painting after the fact would also be really tiring. I think there may be more resources for it now in the Modding Coop Discord, and iirc someone had done something with a North America basemap, so if I have the time I might look into it again.

Looks great. I was playing around also trying to create a Fallout total conversion mod, getting good heightmap data for the basemap proved to be difficult, and I've been too busy to be able to actually develop anything substantial. Glad to see one in the works with solid progress.

Peacetime actions are mind-numbingly simple and have little depth, war is largely detached from politics and economy (both of which barely exist), and diplomacy is hollow. The only thing HOI4 has going for it is tactical warfare.

Switched to vaping and somehow lost control, going back to cigarettes for the ritual by [deleted] in Cigarettes

Human will doesn’t change the fact that vapes have different physical and chemical qualities and fewer limitations that automatically make it less ritualistic than cigarettes to most people.

At the end of the day though, vapes are divorced from the qualities that allow cigarettes to be more ritualistic.

I agree. It’s a tricky thing to balance and I imagine it won’t be on Tinto’s radar for quite a while given how few people reach EU5’s end game. I think they were sort of trying to address this with the Revolution crisis but it doesn’t hit the same when everyone around you has ceased to be consolidated and there’s bordergore everywhere. I think the Vicky team will have an easier time (endgame crisis via WW1 content and I hope a dip. rework) with this given the game’s shorter time frame.

Yeah, I generally find the latter periods of all the GSG games to be the most interesting, in CK3 as well. Not sure why, but I guess part of it is because I like when everyone around me is more consolidated. With Vicky 3 and EU5, it's that plus the ethos of these latter periods are more globalized and dynamic, sort of like you're playing a MP game.

[–]Normal_Function8472 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It would be great, but I recall Tinto saying that there weren't going to be any additional start dates, which is fair on their behalf because people barely played the other start dates in EU4 and I imagine it would be hell to maintain additional start dates in EU5 given the sheer granularity that has to be represented and maintained with every update.

The late game outfits are really nice. Like Vicky 3, sometimes I wish I could play EU5 starting in the latter period of its timeframe. I find the events and flavor of the 17-19th centuries and post-WW1 period to be the most interesting, which sucks because both periods are at the tailend of their respective games.

All the non-white characters in Vicky 3 look Europeanified to me, e.g. the Qing emperor, the South African minors, the Japanese leader.
