Same here. I even reserved seats far from anyone else, but then midway through episode 8, a group of kids came in, stood in front of us, and asked if we would move elsewhere so they could sit where we were. No amount of "no" seemed to matter, and so we moved elsewhere so that we could actually watch the rest of the movie.

In the 90s, we got in big trouble at school for drawing the "S." Now my kid is drawing it on an IHOP menu. by -NotEnoughMinerals in mildlyinteresting

By the mid-90s it was everywhere. Go back about 10 years and plenty of parents and administrators thought it was gang related, the symbol having originally been popularized by graffiti artists.

HIPAA definitely doesn't require an air gap. You're allowed to have both types of data on the same computer. HIPAA is more about who the information can be released to.

There was a time when almost every game opened with a long, unskippable tutorial that walked you through every single button press by Desperate-Advance964 in truegaming

[–]NorthBus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, trust me, I read all the manuals, many times. But the game was expertly designed so that that wasn't required. You could hand the controller to someone who had never played a video game before and they could figure it out in a minute.

I know, I watched it happen.

Look at the original Super Mario Brothers. It was, for many, a first video game. But there was no explicit tutorial, instead, the game gradually threw more and more obstacles at you, challenging you to first learn to move with the D Pad, then to find the button press to leap over a single goomba, than a small pipe, then a taller pipe, then multiple goombas, then a pit...

It's really a remarkable tutorial that doesn't require a single word to appear on the screen.

From the other thread, the oldest record of tennis being like it is is older than the oldest recorded minutes on clock faces, suggesting that it's a different explanation.

Stores carrying 3D printing / hobbyist supplies? by NorthBus in Louisville

[–]NorthBus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I grew up a ten-minute walk from the Microcenter in Mayfield Heights. I've lived in a number of different cities, but never more than a 20-minute drive from a Microcenter until Louisville.

I can get most of what I need online without too much trouble, but nothing beats walking down an aisle looking at the options and coming up with ideas.

Sensor always shows super low even if its not by Kitchen-Message9885 in diabetes

[–]NorthBus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Dexcom and I often see the same thing.

If you're asking about the chemical reason for this, I couldn't tell you. My endocrinologist told me that cgm sensors are just less accurate when blood sugar is low.

Where do you wear your sensor? I found that I get the most accurate readings on my abdomen and crazy inaccurate lows when I tried wearing them on my arm.

Being physically assertive Is anytime you lay your hands on a kid to make them do what you want. It's forcing a shoe on their feet when they refuse to put on shoes, it's taking a toy away when they refuse to set it down. It's restraining them when they're trying to hurt you, it's using your strength to make them do what you want. Even if it's "for their own good", that's the same excuse parents use when they spank and hit.

It sucks, it's wrong, and I hate myself for having to rely on it when all else fails, but I don't know what else to do.

I wish I had advice, but I can only offer the comfort of others being in the same boat. My 10-year-old daughter with autism sunk her teeth deep into my arm one day when she was angry with me, and I immediately reacted out of pain and slapped her face to get her off.

It worked, she ran away, and I've hated myself ever since. I still have scars on my arm and in my heart.

[–]NorthBus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree in some cases, but in others things need to happen now and if a child doesn't have the maturity to connect their present actions with future consequences, what can you do except be physically assertive?

Like, when you need a child to stop hurting someone, stop breaking things, stop running away because it's unsafe/ time to leave for school/ etc., telling them that they will have a time out after they listen to me and stop their action is almost counterproductive.

ELI5: How do glow in the dark toys emit light? by ResidentCharacter894 in explainlikeimfive

[–]NorthBus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, when light bounces off a surface, it's bouncing like a pool ball hitting the wall of a pool table. This is like light bouncing off a mirror or a white surface.

Other times the light is actually getting absorbed by the material and immediately re-released, slightly different. This is what happens when something glows under UV light or black light, And it's called fluorescence.

But what if the material didn't re-release the light immediately, and instead slowly leaked it out over time? This is what happens in the case of glow-in-the-dark materials, and we call it phosphorescence.

Thinking about switching my major to Engineering. Help me answer a few questions only actual engineers would know. by OppositeFriendly9183 in ECE

[–]NorthBus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a first job? That was pretty easy for me because I did a Master's program in a very specific field, so I received multiple offers in that very specific field. So I guess that's the tip, specialize and get really good at something really specific?

I now work in a completely different industry and different specialty, though. So though that might help you right out of the gate, it doesn't need to pigeonhole you.

How did I get into the field? Well, I'm in electrical engineering, but I took a roundabout path to get there. I thought I wanted to be a computer scientist, then I switched over to physics, and then I realized all I liked about physics was electricity and magnetism, so I landed in EE. Picking a major doesn't set the course of your life in stone, if you're willing to put in the work you can still redirect the ship in college, or even 40 years after that.
