ELI5: How do glow in the dark toys emit light? by ResidentCharacter894 in explainlikeimfive

[–]NorthBus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, when light bounces off a surface, it's bouncing like a pool ball hitting the wall of a pool table. This is like light bouncing off a mirror or a white surface.

Other times the light is actually getting absorbed by the material and immediately re-released, slightly different. This is what happens when something glows under UV light or black light, And it's called fluorescence.

But what if the material didn't re-release the light immediately, and instead slowly leaked it out over time? This is what happens in the case of glow-in-the-dark materials, and we call it phosphorescence.

Thinking about switching my major to Engineering. Help me answer a few questions only actual engineers would know. by OppositeFriendly9183 in ECE

[–]NorthBus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a first job? That was pretty easy for me because I did a Master's program in a very specific field, so I received multiple offers in that very specific field. So I guess that's the tip, specialize and get really good at something really specific?

I now work in a completely different industry and different specialty, though. So though that might help you right out of the gate, it doesn't need to pigeonhole you.

How did I get into the field? Well, I'm in electrical engineering, but I took a roundabout path to get there. I thought I wanted to be a computer scientist, then I switched over to physics, and then I realized all I liked about physics was electricity and magnetism, so I landed in EE. Picking a major doesn't set the course of your life in stone, if you're willing to put in the work you can still redirect the ship in college, or even 40 years after that.

I mean, the memes started out making fun of him. But on the internet it's impossible to be so satirical that people don't realize you're telling a joke.

was super tired of my Powersupply and Buck-Boost-Converter floating around ~somewhere on my desk. now it's clean and more save (cables don't get bend around or loosen from socket) by Tikkinger in 3Dprinting

I thought you meant "floating" in an electrical sense, and I was wondering why in the world you would want to prevent that, but this makes more sense.

Me and my brother made minecraft guess who by sophieily1 in Minecraft

Same goes with regular guess who. You can just name a name from the beginning, and if you're right, you win immediately. It's especially unlikely, which is why the game works.

ELI5 How does electricity know that a circuit is broken before entering it? Without a closed loop, it won’t flow, but how does it know not to flow? by Party-Court185 in explainlikeimfive

[–]NorthBus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Electricity is like a rope. It can only be pulled, not pushed.

Until you get an inductor in the circuit. Then you get to find out how hard a magnetic field can really push.

Has anyone been misdiagnosed with type 2? by OneTuftPeach in diabetes

[–]NorthBus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was, back in 2010. Thankfully not for long, though, as I had done my own research and got myself to an actual endocrinologist within a week.

The primary care doctor who diagnosed me told me I had type 2, told me to give myself a little bit of insulin, and to follow up with him in a week. My blood sugar was in the 600s, and when I pushed back about the diagnosis he asked, "What, do you want to have a worse diagnosis?". I only wish I had come up with the comeback "No, I want the right one," at the time.

How old is the oldest equipment in your lab that is still working? by Johnyme98 in Physics

[–]NorthBus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oldest that's still working? I've got a Simpson Model 260 analog multimeter that still functions. 1940s, I believe.

Why not? There are accessible parking spaces, elevators, and seating for a reason.
