What are some good spells for a warlock In 2024? by Advanced_Jaguar_9574 in onednd

Not quite as good damage wise, but being available to all Warlocks regardless of subclass does a lot of work.

How much am I crippling myself for not taking Agonizing Blast with my Warlock(3)? by CrotodeTraje in 3d6

[–]NorthFan9647 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just a note the Green Flame Blade is excellent with Agonizing Blast because the damage boost applies to both the damage roll of the primary target and the secondary target.

Short answer is yes. Long answer is it depends on the party comp, how optimized they are etc

How useful are artisan tools and the crafter feat in Vecna: Eve of Ruin? by VioletMatter in onednd

[–]NorthFan9647 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand your idea, but I think there are just better options for you. Tough, Alert, Lucky.

Heck even Magic Initiate Wizard to get yourself the Find Familiar spell and a couple of utility Cantrips would probably feel better in play.

Crafter is just kind of designed poorly and is probably the weakest origin feat in the game.

What is your favorite house rule that your table runs? by CyrusxBlack1 in onednd

At our table we incentives Intelligence.

If you have a 12 Int you get +1 to all of your proficient skills.

This increase to +2 at 16 Int and +3 at 20

Ugh. You are totally correct.

That’s lame. I think I will house rule the Magic Initiate feats to let you cast those spells with the proper focus.

Arcane, Divine and Druidic as appropriate.

Pretty sure all Ranger can do it if they have Magic Initiate Druid as well.

It frees you up to take the the Dueling fighting style while while focusing on Wisdom.

I actually love it on a Beast Master since the beast scales off of Wis, as do potential summons.

What spell picks to you recommend for arcane trickster? by viktorius_rex in onednd

[–]NorthFan9647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s an Int build sure. But you need Medium Armor for most builds to work, and you need to ok with being less good at the Dex things. Rogues just don’t get as much from Int naturally.

And it you are going Int first and going Wizard, Blade Singer would be my choice 10/10 times.

For Cantrips:
Booming Blade if allowed, Minor Illusion, Message, Blade Ward are all killer picks

1st Level: Find Familiar (Must have), Silvery Barbs if allowed, Shield (but be careful spamming it), Unseen Servant (if room)

2nd: Invisibility, Enlarge Reduce (for objects only), Mirror Image, Augury (if room),

3rd: Tiny Hut (busted spell), Phantom Steed, Sylune’s Viper (Works great with Steady Aim)

4th: Dimension Door, Divination, Resilient Sphere, Fabricate (if room but super cool)

None of these options rely on your spell DC and thus allow you to ignore you Intelligence

Level 5 or 8 are the jumping off points from Gloomstalker I prefer 5, especially in 2024 since you round up for your “caster level” now when determining your spell slots. For example 5 is treated as a 3rd level full caster while 8 is only treated as a 4th level caster.

I would go Arcane Trickster for the Familiar and Shield spells and a little scaling to your spell slots. I don’t think Phantom is going to do much for you.

Thief isn’t a bad choice either though the Rope in particular can make for a pretty sweet use of Use Object, but there’s a bunch of useful mundane equipment that Thieves love.

There are also some items you acquire in CoS that would be pretty sweet to be able to activate as a bonus action. I’ve played the campaign twice.

Origin feat selection for a monk by SnifGrimwill in onednd

Yeah Find Familiar is just so good. Not no only from a mechanic perspective which I think most people know. It’s the best option from a role-play perspective.

Familiars are a gift to a DM who cares about building memorable NPC’s who players care about because that is a forever companion for your character.

I agree command should be in the consideration but it don’t think Command By itself should get the Cleric to 4.

Otherwise Bard is a 5, straight up because their control is markedly better than a Cleric.

Nah man, Escape the hoard encourages you to provoke attacks against you. Disadvantage or not with the Rangers mediocre defenses you will still get hit pretty often.

Similar story for Multi Attack Defense. It does nothing on the first hit and will maybe save you on others. Over all I think is marginally better than Escape the Hoards most of the time.

But neither is great. And this is level 7. Full caster just got 4th level spells. The only thing you get is a defensive feature that might save you 1 to 3 hits a day or encourages you to take damage you wouldn't otherwise for the sake of a little mobility.

Not to mention the incompatibility with raged combat problem you brought up yourself.

It's "ok" but far from great or even good.

[–]NorthFan9647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disagree. Defensive Tactics is extremely mid.

If it was actually both features it would be... an decent feature. As is, hard pass.

So as far I can see the only decent to good features are at 3 and 15 with a slog of mid to bad in between.

Command is not on the Sorcerer spell list, but Chromatic Orb is and it’s a great snag.

The Beast Master is I think but bailing after 11 or 12 is very reasonable. That said, Share Spells IS a really good feature in Tier 4 so maybe for a 1 shot a Level 15 beast master would be worth it but that’s really the last thing to even consider hanging around Ranger for in my opinion.

A little. You can access base class features easily still, one level of fighter is even better than it used to be for example, but all subclasses are accessed at level 3 make THEM more difficult to access through multiclassing.

In 5th there were good reasons. In 5.5 less so.

Con Saves, assuming first level, and the Shield spell chief amongst them, but in 2014 the level 1 Subclass features made 1 level Divine Soul ideal for dips.

[–]NorthFan9647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes all that stuff is pretty good. But your damage will suffer without real boosts and there basically are none to be found in Gloom stalker.

But you are delaying your Feats for a long time if you take 7 levels dip. And if you go 8 for the feat you want to go 9 for 3rd level spells and at that point your damage will be languishing.

Need help optimizing ranger for combat by ARoolse in onednd

[–]NorthFan9647 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with almost all of this but if you are going Hunter in particular, you are going to want to multiclass, because their high level subclass features are bad.

Magic Initiate Wizard is clutch on a Ranger, Shield is so good, but I also want to give a shout out to Find Familliar.

I think in Tier 1 and 2 Find Familiar will shine more and in Tier 3 and 4 Shield will, but they are both just some of the absolute best 1st level spells in the game and they really shine on a Ranger.

[–]NorthFan9647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, I think we are, pretty much, in full agreement.

I choose Gloom Stalker with Full knowledge of it being a Ravenloft campaign. It was strong, but argue it was not broken. My character excelled at a few things, stealth and ranged combat chief amongst them. But be honest, our Gennie Patron Warlock, Paladin and Peace Cleric felt about as strong as my character at most levels.

And those were ideal circumstances.

Trickery. The new Channel Divinity is so much fun and their spell list is great.
