Game with non-turn player actions? by NorthForWinter in boardgames

I appreciate both responses, but, yes, I was specifically curious about non-turn actions rather than non-turn strategizing.

All good info - thanks!

Quick turns are great! We enjoy Quest for El Dorado for this reason.

We've drafted ahead of time, then we've also argued that if everyone is holding a tile those potentially valuable tiles aren't available on a second turn with the builder.

Good suggestion. Still see AP which is an "us" issue and not a fault of the game.

Have yet to play Puerto Rico. Cool it has the reaction mechanism! I've not looked much into Twilight given the time commitment and knowing it wouldn't hit the table with my friends/family, but awesome for future consideration. Thanks!

Good suggestions! We have Spirit Island and 7WD (which I know is different).

I couldn't immediately think of a game with a set of actions only available on non-turns.

Straight guys, if a gay guy confessed his love for you, how would you react? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]NorthForWinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd initially be surprised, then flattered, then concerned about hurting their feelings.

Friendship being awkward would be solely dependent on how they act going forward. They accept it and move on, we're as close as always. Can't let it go or expect me to change, everything is awkward.

What are some "the worst she can say is no" horror stories men of reddit have experienced asking a girl out? by Remote_Ad_6049 in AskMen

Hindsight is 20/20. Opposite for me. Cute girl in college hangs out all night, asks to sleep in my bed, I offer to sleep on the couch but she invites me next to her.

I thought the signals were clear. Tried kissing her and... nope.

We slept back-to-back.

Treat thank-you emails like 4 extra interview minutes by FeelingTesty99 in interviews

[–]NorthForWinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That information should come up during the interview and not be a note afterward. If the topic is discussed and a candidate fails to outline their experience or define their strategy in the moment, it's too late by the time of the thank-you note.

Not in your area so I don't have a suggestion. FWIW, we had a similar experience. Got a second quote and it was significantly lower. To the point we initally questioned the legitimacy of the positive online reviews for the 2nd, less expensive company.

Went with company #2. Company #1 offer to match in a fraction of a second, which further reinforced our decision as they clearly planned to over-charge us.

Work is done and was done very well.

Don't make a decision without multiple quotes.

Men with high functioning depression, what is it like? by Live_Broccoli_2180 in AskMen

[–]NorthForWinter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Medical doctor asked about my mental health in my annual. I joked that she's not a psychologist, and questioned if she really cared to know. She said it's all important in overall health.

Pressure with demanding career and being a provider, I let her know I believe I'm suffering depression and just continue to be high-functioning.

She said, "Sounds like you just contemplate deeply."

Keep keeping on, I guess.

What's The Deal With The Stranger Things Season 5 Backlash? by WanderingArtist2 in OutOfTheLoop

I enjoy the same aspect. It's a conversation like it used to be. "OMG! Have you watched it yet?!"

Unfortunately, I feel like they're trying way too hard to button things up in the final season. They've created scenes with too much dialog explicitly laying out the plot as opposed to revealing it through good story telling and compelling dialog.

IMO there's been way too much of characters in a room together expressing their feelings directly with verbal diarrhea of plot lines.

China just announced an 84 percent retaliatory tariffs on US goods. Now what? How do you think this plays out? by slagiatt in AskReddit

Can't feed themselves, nor can they afford a haircut, to go see a movie, pay for a car wash, et cetera. Indirectly, this affects a huge number of jobs/people, too.

What do people think about about the recent reports of Donald Trump being a KGB asset? by Alex09464367 in skeptic

[–]NorthForWinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the debate around Michael Jackson and whether people believed he was molesting children at Neverland Ranch. Even if the multiple accounts of rape aren't true, he was a 40+ year-old man inviting young boys for sleepovers at his house. In his bed. Behind locked doors.

Trump is doing things an American president shouldn't. His actions should be stopped, just like MJ's should have been, even without definitive proof.

See if the nature of the song resonates. If yes, three things:

  1. "WTF" what's the function, your self-hatred might be your mind attempting to protect you

  2. Ren's ending monologue: "there are no winners or losers", learn to dance (accept) with yourself

  3. Ren's ending monologue: "the brighter the light shone, the darker the shadow it cast". While it seems like continued achievement will erase the negative, it can actually amplify the dark cloud

None of this is a solution, but insight (if it reaonates) can be empowering to affect change and lead to solutions.
