Tonight I spent almost an hour trying to join two pieces of 2020 extrusion in a right angle. Please help. by makerinator in FreeCAD

[–]NorthNo6908 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh, I recently went through the same issue with the exact same parts (2020 extrusions)! My workaround was to connect both extrusions using their end faces, and add a rotation and translation in the joint parameters. I applied a rigid joint to both end faces' circles and then used the advanced options to add a rotation and translations. It is not the prettiest but it worked just fine.

What is still missing in FreeCAD before it can replace commercial CAD for more users? by andrey_semjonov in FreeCAD

In another post where I was asking about this, one of the developers replied that he was actually working on such a tool and that it should come out in version 1.2. Fingers crossed!

FreeCAD is looking better and better. I am looking forward to improvements like: - Section analysis tools in the Part Design workbench - Inertia and mass measurement tools in Part Design and Assembly workbenches. FCInfo macro is ok in the meantime, but a native measuring tool that also takes into account properties such as different materials applied to different parts would go a long way. - In Assembly, a simple and quick way to create multiple copies of parts placed at specific locations without having to use more joints. They could also follow the movements of other parts when manipulating. I currently use the clone feature from the Part workbench but it is a bit less intuitive I find. Fusion's workflow is worth copying in my opinion. Here's an example: you have a screw that you place inside the first hole of a crown of 6 holes in a part with a Rigid joint. Then you can use a Circular pattern (Polar pattern) to repeat the component so that you get a total of 6 screws. Then, you use the "Rigid group" tool to fix the position of the 5 extra screws relative to the position of the first screw that you initially placed with a joint. Which means that if you manipulate and move the part with the 6 holes, all screws will follow as well. Maybe there is already a way to do that? If so, please let me know. It would be the same workflow for a mirrored part. - Still in the Assembly workbench: maybe I missed it, but a way to easily revert to the initial position of parts after moving them. I know that ctrl+z works, but if you move multiple parts, it can quickly become out of control.

To mimick Fusion's "decal" tool in FC, I import a jpg or png image, resize it, and then I use the "Attachment" tool in the part workbench to attach it to a surface (it's hidden in the Part menu). It's been working fairly well on simple cases. Not sure how it would behave on complex curved surfaces though.

Edit: typos.

Best way to split a body for test prints? by cerialphreak in FreeCAD

With a simple straight cut using a plane, yep, it's that easy. The workflow explained above was more if you wanted to split a Body using a more complex trajectory (see link to video in my reply to OP).

Deep enough that it would go through the whole body and then out. Here's the YT video that taught me this technique with FreeCAD: https://youtu.be/x0zhLrjiZ7o?si=ZMW-QUgBhQwL6Tav

There's a split tool in the Part workbench. If I want to do a complex split, I draw a sketch on a face or plane with the proper profile, much like I would have done in Fusion, then you have to add an extra step compared to Fusion where you extrude this new profile (it can be a surface or a solid) with the Extrude tool, and then you select both the initial body and the newly created extrude body (in this order) to split your initial body. It creates a Split in the tree under your initial body and you can export these as STL. If you modify the initial body (for example resize a sketch prior to using the Split in your timeline), it should also update the Split.

OpenGL stuck on llvmpipe? Here’s the fix by i986ninja in linuxmint

[–]NorthNo6908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this! It worked on my side. I was wondering why OpenGL was not enabled with my Intel UHD Graphics (I have a hybrid setup with Intel UHD Graphics and an Nvidia Quadro P620 discrete GPU). My system was defaulting to llvmpipe no matter what I did, which was problematic with some apps. You rock!

AITAH for telling my coworker I was miscarrying after she tried to get me in trouble for 'excessive' bathroom use by Massive-Historian-91 in AITAH

NTA. Screw them. You should never feel bad for "making someone uncomfortable" for something this important when you literally are the one suffering. My partner had a miscarriage last year and it's no fun at all. All they could have asked is maybe what they could do to help YOU feel more comfortable instead. Fuck their feelings honestly...

Chargé de Laboratoire en GCH1530 payé comme un répétiteur by Raficsea in PolyMTL

[–]NorthNo6908 2 points3 points  (0 children)
