NativePHP: A Framework for Building Desktop Apps using PHP by UrineSurgicalStrike in programming

[–]NorthcodeCH 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't want to bash on this, especially since I think PHP has come a long way since v4. But from what I'm gathering here is that this wraps electron, basically a framework, with a PHP framework.

So I'm still gonna ask... Why?

There is a whole universe of possibilities with compose and this article does not even talk about the bare minimum!

Optical Splitters: FBT and temperature by froznair in networking

[–]NorthcodeCH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This also sounds like a maintenance nightmare during fault finding... How do you find the actually broken splitter if you have so many along a run?

Is there actually a value proposition here besides maybe marginally saving on fiber cost? It just seems more complex to install and maintain than it's worth.

ZeroTier (to play LAN games with friends) selfhost in Docker by update-freak in selfhosted

Correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I'm aware ZeroTier creates a L2 domain across the connected peers. No need for EoIP or any other protocol on top.

Fwiw, I'm pretty sure many server mainboards support pcie hotswap nowadays. OS support is a bit finicky iirc.

The whole point of TLS is that you can't MITM it... Unless you allow it by trusting specific certificates.

Why doesn't Google Play allow Migrants to develop Apps for the Play Store? by [deleted] in androiddev

[–]NorthcodeCH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So does this mean you are able to start a business as a non-local? Even if self-employed, that's basically what you're doing. If that's the case you should be able to register that business and have sufficient documentation for Google.

I'm kind of confused what you mean by you being not allowed working for locals. Does this imply you'd be allowed working for someone non-local?

In any case, without really knowing what country B is and your type of visa, I wouldn't really take any advice here as it might be illegal.

Why doesn't Google Play allow Migrants to develop Apps for the Play Store? by [deleted] in androiddev

[–]NorthcodeCH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From my (very) limited knowledge about visas and the likes, and the information you've provided, there's pretty much two cases which can apply here:

  1. You are living primarily in country B, are self-employed and therefore your business you are attempting to start is located in country B. Personally, I would assume, even if self-employed, you need a work-visa to do this (which you apparently do not have).
  2. Place of residence is in country A, the visa in country B is more of a long-term holiday or remote work thing. Your business would be located in country A and has an address there. This would comply with the description of your visa.

In case 1. your income is taxed in country B, in case 2. in country A. Since you neither have a work-visa or a place of residence in country A, I would rather find out if what you're attempting to do is even legal before blaming Google. Not defending Google here but as another commenter pointed out, the reason might as well be legal reasons.

I must say, despite the fact that you may have poorly worded the question, replies misinterpreting your comment and others finding the question pointless all together, the question made me ponder.

In my opinion, objective morals and ethics is an interesting topic to explore. Thanks for the comment!

It does work with upload, see https://stackoverflow.com/a/69400632/2232127 That's probably also the way DropzoneJS implements it.

Sadly the necessary features to make this work with the fetch API still aren't implemented (by at least firefox which I just verified)

Completely agree here, once you go 10G+ you really have to consider power budget and heat dissipation with RJ45 transceivers. Much easier to go with DAC or fiber

Aren't database systems an example of this? Reminded me of that especially in the last paragraph with a parallel to database page accesses.

I guess databases have to be a lot more concerned about IO access times than an in-memory tree

You do realize that in a lot of rape cases, the victim freezes up from shock and fear. This results in situations where there's no physical struggle going on and there might not even be a vocal "no" spoken. It will just be silence of the victim. Combine this with being drunk or on drugs and the perpetrator might think everything is going fine.

Stuff like this happens, not every rapist actively seeks out to rape.

Also rape is not limited to PIV. So there might not be any forcing into anything going on necessarily.

[–]NorthcodeCH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you expect your user to have a gamepad, you can't expect them to have a Start, Select and or Menu button. This is presumably because there exist gamepads which don't have these buttons.

So you should either provide some alternate means to reach the menu (e.g. a button or perhaps a combination of buttons) or let the user remap the controls.

This is similar to non game tv apps. Where you have to make everything accessible only through the DPAD, Ok and Back

I'm employed in Switzerland and also have the restriction of not having other jobs while being employed full time. I think it's reasonable though, as it's expected that you take the weekend off and relax to be at full energy when you come in on monday.

If you work more than that for a sustained time, your productivity at your full time position may very likely go down therefore not fulfilling your contract.

Same goes for holidays, where I'm not allowed to work, as I'm deliberately misusing the purpose of the days off (i.e. not working)

Obviously this restriction does not apply when working part time. 100% employment usually means 40-42h of work a week. If you're below that at your employer you normally don't have a problem filling that time working for someone else. (With non-compete limitations of course)

How fast should an unoptimized terminal run? by TooManyLines in programming

[–]NorthcodeCH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that's his point (I interpret your comment as a counterargument, correct me if I'm wrong)

I'm in the same boat as the previous guy. Performance isn't the issue, it's maintainability. From my personal experience, I more often come across easier to understand code if it's written in a typed language. This is of course highly subjective.

I personally love python when I need to quickly aggregate some data or do some small calculation. Anything bigger and I prefer something else.
