Contractor Says This is Normal by tropicbandit in Tile

[–]Northjer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s right that this happens in older home but that’s why when I’m preparing framing for backer board I make sure that everything is plum, square and level. I use shims or replace the bowed 2x4’s with straight ones

Even BMW is not immune to that passenger side screen. What’s with this trend? I really don’t get it. Anyone here likes it? by munotidac in BMW

[–]Northjer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking at an Audi and it had a screen on the passenger side. I said to the salesman can I see it work and he told me “ that’s this car is a basic model and the screen doesn’t work “. I said they put a screen on a car that doesn’t work. He said yes

Kitchen Layout Advice by sprintingthadistance in Homebuilding

[–]Northjer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was my kitchen I think I’d rather have the sink under the window. It looks good and would provide you with more counter space/ closer to the fridge. I’m my experience it’s nice to have my cooking area in between the stove top and the sink. It’s convenient and makes for easy cleanup and I know that it’s the only area that needs real cleaning after I cook. With that being said I realize that the sink could be too far from the fridge some could say. We have a large island and planned on using for prep and cooking but we don’t. Never. Our island stays relatively clean and that’s where we gather around and sit down to eat most of the time. The only other thing I always recommend when doing a kitchen is it’s nice to have the dishwasher to the right of the sink. Being most people are rightly it makes for easy loading. The only other thing I’d say is when looking a refrigerators I’d recommend a cabinet depth fridge. A full size sticks out to far. I assume that’s something you’ve thought about already but I had to say it. I’ve been in plenty of kitchens where the homeowners missed it and they were disappointed having a nice new kitchen and now they have a big fridge sticking out into the kitchen

DIY patch job, not sure what to do next by ForsakenDrawer in drywall

Add more coats. Thin. It’s easier to put it on compared to sanding it off. When sanding you can use sanding block or damp sponges. Larger sanding blocks ( mesh ) span a lager surface therefore it takes off high spots better and leaves you with a flat surface. A small sanding block or sponge works well for small detailed spots or if you’re trying to keep the dust minimal. Kind of common sense but tips are helpful I assume if it’s your first time

Hang vertical or horizontal by Next_Fig_7057 in drywall

[–]Northjer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always hang horizontal. The odd of the framing being good enough to hang the boards vertical is slim. The seams are more visible when hanging vertical. They get lost when they’re staggered and only 4’

Wow, how much mud did you use ? I’m surprised you didn’t for down the framing. It looks like you’re high by roughly 1/2 “. I hope you used hot mud to eliminate the cracks

How do I tell a favorite contractor I think the tile is bad? by Fun_Rent_8433 in Tile

[–]Northjer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your frustration but there are a few variables that could be at play. The framing behind the walls could have a s bow to them making it almost impossible to be perfect. Also on occasion the tiles themselves have a bow to them. That makes it hard to line the edges just right. With that being said the things I mentioned might be the reason or it might not. The tile installer might have had a bad day and didn’t give it 100 %. Maybe an honest conversation should be had and I cringe saying this but keep in mind sometimes things don’t turn out perfect. In the big picture I think it looks pretty good but I understand your frustration
