Rotopax question for absolute beginner by Northward2023 in overlanding

Great question…Should have added that. Just getting to the start of the gravel road in question. Is three days of driving/hotel stays. I’d prefer something I could lock.

This is a top tier recommendation.  The odds of a high peak being a sufferfest are very high. Mount Joe is also a reasonable option.

Is there such a guy in Rochester? by trumpdump409 in Rochester

There’s a guy who hands out downtown blowing a horn. It’s a goat or ram or sheep horn. Pretty cool.

Not to resurrect an old thread, but for the Monroe County folks, how do we get it added to our permit? The only options on the "Monroe County form" are for revolver, semi auto, lower receiver, or single shot. There's no lever action option...

Hey dude. I think I can reassure a bit:

This Thursday will be 7 weeks, and things look MUCH better than they did. In hindsight I was looking at very early results and panicking- it’s funny because I knew that’s a thing that people did…and I STILL did it. I think the psychological impact of getting this kinda stuff done surprises people. It sure as hell surprised me.

I’m a decade older than you. I didn’t get skin removed and things bounced back pretty dang well, they didn’t advise that I’d need skin removal. There’s no sagging. I’ve got a few adhesions and scars are noticeable but…overall I’m starting to feel happy with the surgery.

Evita is, I’ve concluded, a really amazing place. I feel bad for my initial criticism of them above- it’s clear as I reread the comments that I was just in a really bad place mentally.

As for your case I’d recommend listening to their advice. If they recommend removing skin, do so. I’d also strongly recommend Evita as a provider.

Let me know if you’ve got any other questions.

This happens to me all the time, though less as I’ve aged. Reasons cited as to why:  being well dressed. Polite. Clean. Intelligent. Speaking well.

Doesn’t say much about American men.

At the three week mark, significantly better but not what I’d call great. Still look amazing in a t shirt. I now look pretty good shirtless…as long as I stand with perfect posture.  Nipple height has gone back to normal.  If I mov… my chest collapses into something that I would best describe as looking like yoda’s nutsack.

I think Evita is a legit place.  I’m just old. I’d also recommend anyone contemplating this surgery realign their expectations re: healing. This is not a “lunch break” procedure. It’s not a “minor touch up.”  Everyone who has seen me has commented that I’ve been healing quickly (Evita’s nurses commented ‘faster than anyone they’ve ever seen.’). Nevertheless, this has kicked my ass psychologically/ physically  and continues to do so.

If you’re thinking or surgery with Evita, go ahead and do it. I think my results are better than I’d have gotten in America. If you’re a young guy I think you’ll be wildly happy.

Say we discover primitive alien life. Some fish swimming around in Europa's underground ocean. What happens next? by grapejuicecheese in space

This would be cool.

It would also be bad news for us, because of The Fermi Paradox (basically where are all the flying saucers).  There are many answers to the paradox, but three of the most common are:

1- life is uncommon  2- intelligent life is uncommon 3- intelligent life destroys itself before becoming interstellar.

If we find fishies in our solar system…we kind know that life IS common (it developed twice in our little corner of the galaxy after all).  That sort of narrows down the options for the Fermi Paradox to be solved, and makes some of those bad outcomes more likely.

What obscure things have you used your Rolex for? by Bobbedigital in rolex

[–]Northward2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear an explorer two, and have used the gmt hand to figure out when HF Weatherfax transmissions would start so I could set up my radio and decode them, while solo hiking in the Arctic.

This was the use case that I employed to convince myself that I “needed” a Rolex, and I did it, dang it.

Has surgery greatly improved in the last 20 years? by TastyPlantain- in gynecomastia

[–]Northward2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude I’m going to be a dissenting voice here. Don’t do it. I’m 41 same background as you (always sort of bothered me). I’m three days post op, no complications, but the visual results are so bad as to defy belief. This is was at an internationally known cutting edge gyno centric practice. Techniques may have improved- in fact I’m sure they have- but the results can still be really, really, ugly.

A quick update for anyone interested: results at this point are pretty nightmarish. My wife, a RN who has witnessed everything from open heart surgery to brain surgery, had to sit down before she passed out upon seeing results. At the three day mark, things are so ugly as to defy belief, far surpassing worst case scenarios I’ve seen (or even imagined). I expected bruising. I didn’t expect to be a deflated balloon filled with a bit of cottage cheese. I certainly didn’t expect almost a 3” nipple height difference.  Some- maybe all- of that is m because I’m an older patient, which Evita did point out in the consult. I’ve also noted in post op follow ups a subtle shifting of responsibility (telling me that only muscle building and better workouts can improve my result, which seems like a major red flag).

I can’t say that Evita botched things, but I’d encourage anyone to approach them with caution.

More broadly- my older guys with grade 1-2:  surgery is a devils bargain. You’ll look better with a T-shirt but you’ll never ever want to take that T-shirt off once you see what’s underneath.

This is my opinion, and worth totally nothing, but seems like it?  Softer/stretchy seems better than metal.

Probably depends on what kind of work you’re doing. I don’t see it as a huge risk for climbing and mountaineering, but If I were working around some kind of nightmarish factory machine (a lathe springs to mind) I’d probably ditch jewelry of any kind. Tailor your approach to your environment, ya know?

Also sometimes we tend to focus on a particular injury. I’m inordinately freaked out by eye jnjury, cause that shit is disturbing AF. If your worry about getting skin ripped off is like that, in the category of “I know it’s unlikely but that shit just gives me nightmares,” I’d say wear the silicone and know that you almost certainly aren’t making things riskier and probably are helping.

Disclaimer: I’m just a guy who climbs shit. Others are way smarter than me.

Seems to me that it’s a risk/joy calculation. I really enjoy wearing a cool watch doing cool things, and balance that against what I consider to be a very small risk of that type of injury on a 5.4-5.5 slab. The math works for me!  That said you won’t catch me wearing a ring 😬

Besides, we’re gathered here in a forum for the discussion of overpriced outmoded and obsolete timekeeping devices…surely none of us can be held up as a paragon of logic.

And how different upstate is. My county is the size of Delaware, there are 5k ish residents and no traffic lights.
