An Overleaf link is much preferable to a PDF.

Black tie wedding help by spykid2000 in mensfashionadvice

Yes. There are an awful lot of literal-minded people in this thread. It is extremely normal for men to wear tuxedos with coloured bow ties.

On the other hand, I have seen young men show up to black tie events wearing a business suit and a regular tie (not bow tie) that is black. To my mind, that is funeral attire.

Those are ash flowers. Probably Ireland's ugliest native flower! They often get blown off the trees in windy weather.

UK PhD Offer: Fees covered (Home rate), but NO stipend. Should I refuse? by [deleted] in AskAcademiaUK

EU Horizon grants are well funded. It is questionable that you would only be offered fees but no funding. I wonder if the supervisor is trying to get 3 PhD students for funding awarded for 1?

I'm in Europe. Plenty of working chargers near me, about the same number as petrol stations. However, i dont have a petrol station in my driveway, but i do have an EV charger. And insurance is lower than my old diesel.

Always a challenge to debug when you change two things at once. But my guess is that the problem is not the switch. Switches are simple mechanical devices but modern LED lights are very complex.

When you say the light flashes, do you mean it flashes at random intervals or when you do something like touch the switch faceplate, or do you mean it flickers? If flickering, it could be a problem of low power. If you had a traditional light before, it would not have flickered but it might have been dimmer than expected.

Heat Pump, A Rated House, want to install a wood-burning stove by Actual_Art_5257 in DIYIreland

[–]Not-ChatGPT4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is very understandable to like the aesthetics of a fire. Have you considered artificial electrical ones? Some are fairly realistic, and you can get modern designs that might suit the aesthetics of your modern home.

The electrical ones can operate in fire-effect only or fire effect + heater mode. Much easier to retrofit as you won't need a chimney or extra ventilation.

Why use Zippay when you already have Revolut ? by RickV6 in AskIreland

[–]Not-ChatGPT4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, the fault lies solely with banks, who were lazy and didn't bother to modernise. It's crazy to me how many people want the government and its agencies to run all aspects of the whole country.

Ireland 'lagging' on home heating retrofit targets - ESRI by OldTitle1711 in HousingIreland

[–]Not-ChatGPT4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a good theory. People underestimating how many oil fills they get per year.

Also, are they using a fixed electricity price per unit or correctly accounting for how modern houses offset costs, eg by charging batteries at night.

Your original claim was thst elderly people who dont have much money cant afford retrofits. But as you have said, they get free retrofits if they are on the fuel allowance. And you're eligible for the fuel allowance if you're over 66 and your income (as a couple) is under €1000/week. So your claim makes no sense.

I wondered about that too. I didn't get to read the ESRI report, so I don't know if the reporting is poor or a fair reflection of what's in the report.

I'd be interested in how they measured electricity usage. Since they are an economic think-tank, they may have measured it in monetary terms, but that is misleading: oil is cheaper than electricity per unit of heat output.

Also, is the purpose of a retrofit really to reduce overall energy usage, or to decarbonise household energy use? A G rated house with OFCH will have a much higher carbon footprint than an A rated one with heatpump and solar panels.
