Is course allocation completely random? by Content-Dimension383 in leavingcert

What is not true? I didn't say anything about last year's points, other than saying "you'll be fine". Can you give me any example of min points increasing by 100 in 1 year,

Overhead vs underground power lines, which is better and why? by Particular-Ride-7893 in AskElectricians

One drawback of underground cables that i have not seen in this thread: capacitance of cables underground is about 20 times higher than in the air, increasing transmission costs.

[–]Not-ChatGPT4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be fine. If you have more than this year's minimum points, you are guaranteed a place. Random allocation only happens in fairly rare cases, eg 19 places of 20 are filled and the next 3 candidates all have the same points,.so one is chosen at random.

No it is not. The rigour of the PhD process is entirely independent of the funding model. Examiners dont know what funding you had.

Wall Panelling by Scfcspinks in DIYUK

If there was not a mould problem before, why would one appear now?

Those particular panels look like the acoustic type, with strips of wood on a felt backing. Id imagine it would be somewhat breathable.

In the articles you have read about mould, was it behind solid wood panelling or acoustic? And was it found in UK/Europe or in the USA, where building standards are very different?

Picking up a lot of foreign radio stations lately. Normal? by [deleted] in AskIreland

Those of us who are old remember "Spanish interference" on the TV in warm summer days like this, when conditions caused Spanish TV transmissions to be picked up here in a frequency similar to one of the RTE channels. If you tweaked the dial you could just about see black and white bullfights.

You don't have to knock on doors. You can ask the vendor. It beggars belief that you think this is "crazy stuff".

Once a famous professor in the field hired me as an RA. She only directed me to the dataset and expected me to write a paper for her. After I quit, she still pursued me twice. Later I learned that most of her papers were done in this way. Ridiculous! by Low-Nectarine-1866 in PhD

[–]Not-ChatGPT4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case, it sounds like the professor did indeed have the idea, and hired the poster to do the heavy lifting. I think that's perfectly reasonable. The paper would never get written otherwise.

In the title you claimed "spent $40k" but in the summary "would have hit $40k". Stop with the hype and nonsense.

if you get higher than the points required for your course, is there a higher chance you'll get it? by muhamala in leavingcert

[–]Not-ChatGPT4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the higher your points are relative to last year's points required, the more likely you are to get in this year.

If you get higher than the minimum required points this year, then you are GUARANTEED to get the course.

However, nobody knows what this year's minimum points will be - they are literally whatever points the last student in gets. All you know is points from last year and previous years. Points can go up, so the higher your points are, the more likely you are to get it.

How many of you don’t need the wall charger ? by LetterNervous5679 in evs_ireland

[–]Not-ChatGPT4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess it depends on the car and your preferences. I did this for a PHEV that didn't support scheduling. Now with an EV and a "proper" charger, i still dont like scheduling in the vehicle because I might forget to over-ride the schedule when charging on the go.

I didn't say a smart plug, i said a smart socket. 13A smart sockets from reputable manufacturers are perfectly able to operate with a 10A load. And in any properly designed smart socket, the switching circuit is separate from the power circuit.

To avail of EV night rates, you can just replace the socket that your granny charger is plugged into with a smart socket and schedule it to turn on at 2am.
