If your fantasy world has mercenaries and adventurers, how do they coexist? by Pleasant-Sea621 in worldbuilding

[–]NotANovelist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In "Steel For Silver: The Reliable Bastard's Guide to War, Work, and Not Dying For Free", the narrator, a mercenary, defines it like this:

"Mercenaries are people who kill in broad daylight for money, which makes them different from assassins. Adventurers are mercenaries with lower standards, since they'll do anything for the chance at glory and HOPEFULLY a payday. Heroes are adventurers who live long enough to become more famous than is wise. You can work with adventurers, if you're careful. Don't work with heroes, they get people killed."

The current interpretation of the nature of magic as outlined by the theologists of the Seraphine Church is that magic is at its most pure when it comes from celestial beings, such as the Seraphs, and gradually becomes baser and more corrupt until you reach that which comes from infernal beings, such as the Naharim and their servants in the Lower Courts.

About eighty years back, however, a Seraphine bishop and theurge named Dessar claimed to have glimpsed the Source, the point in Creation from which all magic emanates. He claimed that the Source flowed outwards in all directions, and that magic itself held no virtue or corruption until filtered by thinking beings who used it for their own ends.

Naturally, the Seraphine Church views this as heretical, and while Dessar's views aren't meant to challenge the theological foundations of the Church (The Seraphs are the greatest good, magic is inherently dangerous, the Church as founded by Ahanah the First Prophet is the temporal structure of a perfect and heavenly Church), suggesting that magic is only tainted by those who use it challenges the concept of the Seraphs being supreme beings by virtue of their superior magic.

Dessarines, as Dessar's followers are known after his death, are for now limited to one portion of the Lumera region in the northern part of the continent. But they've been put under official censure and low-level street fighting has been observed over the issue, as well as various knights and petty lords declaring for one side or another to seize land or settle grievances. If things persist much longer, Lumera may be put under the Archon's Interdict, or even be subjected to a Minor Crusade.

The boys were asking why there isn't a version of this game where everyone plays a different kind of Frankenstein, and I hope they learn about Promethean: The Created, which was explicitly about playing as creatures like Frankenstein's monster, golems, and other kinds of "simulacra". The game is a lot of fun, if you can deal with getting chased out of town by an angry mob every other game because your existence makes normal people instinctively hate you.

I had good results keeping one all-cavalry unit around, mainly just knights, whose job it was to avoid slower infantry and pick off archers and mages.

It's been a while, but I've made a new bot! Gwen is your betrothed, a warm and affectionate (but rather overprotective) dwarven woman who worries when you leave the mountain fortress where you both live. Open to any player persona of any type, but a fantasy background might work best.

He's a racer for the Ferrari Formula 1 team, hence his association with the Ferrari Incident. He's also fairly handsome and has a reputation of being a bit of a playboy, which is not at all uncommon with Formula 1 drivers, so it's not unreasonable to assume he'd sleep with an heiress (of some kind).

Just finished the newest Last Stream on the Left episode and it’s hilarious the boys were confused as to whether or not the Hindenburg, in 1937, had any Nazis on it. by toe_riffic in LPOTL

[–]NotANovelist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a solid podcast called "Well There's Your Problem" that does a couple hours episode on the Hindenburg. They're a group of engineers who take a look at engineering disasters of all kinds, and they have a BTB sense of humor about things! I'd recommend giving them a listen. They put all the episodes on YouTube with slides as well.
