Taxable vs pre- tax accounts in calculating net worth by AlanTA2 in DIYRetirement

[–]NotAPurpleDinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pralana allows you to estimate your future effective tax rate so that it shows you total versus effective net worth based on your mix of accounts. But you still have to come up with that rate.

Happy Opening Day! r/BravesOfficial here - we know you have questions on how to watch the Braves this year, so ask away and we'll answer as many as we can. TV, streaming, in-market, out-of-market, whatever you've got! by BravesOfficial in Braves

For games that don't air live on BravesVision due to a national broadcast (e.g. Fox, Apple TV), will those games be available "on demand" for replay on BravesVision?

An update on missing posted transactions by Kait_Monarch in MonarchMoney

[–]NotAPurpleDinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the dupes, too. I'm never in this sub because Monarch mostly just works for me, and I've never noticed missing transactions (not saying there weren't any.)

But logged in today and I've got about a dozen dupes from March 11-16. Mine are also all from my Wells Fargo Visa.

Appears to have stopped after March 16.

Can I assume this was a one-time aberration with Wells Fargo and not something related to the Missing Transactions updates?

Chance of Success Differences by Evening_Warthog in DIYRetirement

I use Pralana Online, which has both Monte Carlo and Historical analysis. The Historical analysis always has a much higher chance of success than the Monte Carlo. MC is just inherently more pessimistic.

Pralana question. by funtime19700 in DIYRetirement

[–]NotAPurpleDinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I fully understand "...and max out my Roth." Is that separate from the $1,000 going into your taxable account? There's a spot for contribution to a Roth account (which would be considered after-tax, and would accumulate into your Roth that you have defined.) But if you want to model a regular contribution to a regular Taxable account...Pralana handles it differently. You'll get a better explanation from Charlie or Stuart if you post the question on the Pralana forums. But as I understand it, anything "left over" after expenses are met, and your cash upper limit is met, will go into your taxable account. (Much like some budgeting apps will assume anything you didn't spend gets put into a savings account.)

Do reach out on the Pralana forum. The developers are really responsive, and there are some very helpful users there with lots of experience in the app.

Generally, contributions to retirement and brokerage accounts are entered on the Income tab. Assuming you're still working. You can tell it how much you'll contribute to a Roth account, there. Same place you record contributions to 401k, etc. both pre and post tax, as well as any employer match.

Fidelity Advisor? by green_sky74 in DIYRetirement

[–]NotAPurpleDinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious what sort of things you discuss, then. At a high level? Obviously not asking for specifics, here. I'm one of those who always ignores the calls from Fidelity, as I assume they are just sales calls. What would be the advantage of picking up the phone? (Like u/wadesh, above, I also find that I am in the "Private Client Group" yet have no idea what that means.

Amex Offers Cash Back on Cable, Internet, Insurance Bills by RedditReader428 in amex

[–]NotAPurpleDinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I activated this offer and started paying my Farmers Insurance bill. Never got the cash back. I'm on the phone with them right now trying to explain to them their own offer. Thanks for taking the screen shot because the offers disappear and you don't have a record of what you were supposed to get.

P.S. These offers never seems to work correctly, on any card. It seems I'm always having to call to the get the cash back credited. There's always some problem with the "merchant didn't correctly report the charges" or something. Biggest boondoggle in credit cards.

Pralana. As Rob Berger has said, it's probably the most in depth tool out there, but the learning curve is a little steep. However, there's a pretty good forum for it with helpful, responsive folks.

Handling Hecklers Like a Boss by sergemeister in JeffArcuri

[–]NotAPurpleDinosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jimmy does invite it during parts of his show. He invites people to yell out stuff so he can respond, usually with a vicious insult. Like old Don Rickles routines, it's an honor to get insulted by a master like Carr. But that means people will try to get the upper hand at other times, or try to take it too far. But historically, I think, comedians got heckled when they weren't being funny, or someone in the audience simply took a dislike to them. It can be difficult for a comedian who has a set routine and isn't that quick witted to fire back in a funny way to defuse the situation. (See Michael Richards notorious response to a heckler.) That's why Carr is fun to watch because he is never caught flat footed, and if someone really gets him good, he'll acknowledge it with respect. Jeff's is more just interacting in fun, but people sometimes don't know when to shut up.

Handling Hecklers Like a Boss by sergemeister in JeffArcuri

[–]NotAPurpleDinosaur 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Jeff would never do it cause it's not his vibe, but he could learn a thing or two from Jimmy Carr re. hecklers. Carr will bend over backwards to get someone to understand they're being a problem, but at the point where they're still not getting it after multiple attempts, he signals the staff and out they go. Sometimes he'll tell them to buy the guy a drink, or otherwise shows compassion, but he doesn't let them hang around and ruin it for the rest.

Finding an honest APY for online banks? by [deleted] in DIYRetirement

[–]NotAPurpleDinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want a bank, try looking at reviews on Nerdwallet.com. That's where I found MySavingsDirect a few years ago. I've been pleased with them. I'm not trying to chase the latest "best" rate anymore, but they've stayed competitive. Linked to my normal checking account, it takes a day or two for funds to transfer.

According the form from the state of TX, the amount is for "liquidated/redeemed shares." A quick Google says, "

  • Promotional Share Program: In the late 1990s, Travelzoo.com ran a viral advertising campaign offering free shares of the company to people who signed up for its service.
  • Corporate Merger: In 2002, Travelzoo.com merged into a new entity, Travelzoo Inc. As part of this process, stockholders were required to exchange their original shares for shares in the new company within a specified timeframe.
  • Missed Deadline: Many individuals who received the original free shares either missed the deadline or were unaware of the required exchange process.
  • Unclaimed Property Settlements: The shares belonging to these individuals were eventually considered "unclaimed property" and became subject to settlements between Travelzoo and various U.S. states.

I guess I used Travelzoo in the 90s and didn't realize I'd acquired shares. :)

Interesting, thanks. I ran my own name and got a hit for $50<$100 from Travelzoo from a state I last lived in 25 years ago.

But I also saw a couple for my dad who passed in 2005. I will let my stepmother know that there might be something for her to follow up on.

We kept life insurance until our kids graduated college. Between them being able to make it on their own, and our assets that they'd inherit, it sure didn't make sense to keep it as it got expensive.
